TRUTHFACT: MS having eSRAM yield problems on Xbox One

It's windows you know.

Seriously, even Windows 8 was designed to run on a 200 MB RAM footprint. Surface Pros ship today with only 2 GB of RAM.

3 GB for an embedded OS is unfathomable in 2013. I can only imagine how many engineering teams and business development people have staked out turf in the OS for their own ends. Apparently there is nobody to push back on each of those pieces, and say something like "maybe we don't need a full-featured Skype client with video conferencing resident in OS ALL the time."

Yeah there's a word for those people...delusional.

I own all consoles and a gaming PC, and I'm about the farthest thing you'll see from a Sony fanboy (nearly didn't buy a PS3 back in the day due to the initial screwups and arrogance), yet I'm with everyone else in berating this anti-consumer nonsense.

MS has fully, completely, 1000% brought that on themselves.

Cognitive dissonance is what keeps a fanboy going. I eventually grew out of it as far as consoles go. You just realise that taking sides means you have to lose out somewhere, sometime.
That said I'm still a Gran Turismo fanboy so I stay well away from all GT or Forza threads. No point getting into an argument with someone as delusional as myself.

Nintendo does have restrictive DRM on its digital titles. DSi, 3DS, Wii and WiiU digital games are all tied to the single piece of hardware it was downloaded onto. With no means to transfer to other people or resale.

It's just on the physical side that Nintendo are DRM free.
I do expect this to change however, but the Xbone will not backpedal anytime soon.

this is what I was thinking, 3GB for the os is downright silly

Most of my friends are holding out on buying Xbones because it's technically inferior. They don't even care or know about the DRM stuff.

It actually surprised me. One would think it was the other way around.

many bought all their multis on the 360 because they were the better looking versions, its not that surprising.....

I would like to know who approached who...

Was it MS going to the publishers and offering to add DRM to games

Or

The publishers asking the console makers to add DRM to the consoles.

If the latter, why didn't Nintendo add it to th Wii U?

Nintendo consoles dont sell enough 3rd party titles for publishers to worry about used game sales.

3gb for a console OS is ridiculous imo

It's actually depressing. PS4 having GDDR5 memory will help performance in some ways, but it wont really help the system to do anything that the Xbox 1 couldnt. The Xbox 1 have 2 GB's less memory does though. Now everything has to be built around MS garbage console design. MS have fucked us all just so their goddamned console can be a voice activated remote.

To be fair, 3 GB is not the amount being used, just the reservation for OS plus non-game apps. It's still a lot, especially when you consider it's almost half of the total RAM.

Every MS thread is over 100 page long, the fucking E3 hasn't even started up. Scary stuff. GAF are you okay? Should I even bother to come tomorrow?

Tomorrow will be interesting, seems like MS popularity here hit a bottom, so the rage can't possibly be even worse. Maybe Microsoft's strategy is the machiavellian one of dumping all the bad at once (in a very confusing format) and drop the good news bit by bit for the next months so the fires will have died down by launch.

So maybe tomorrow they will be all good news and ignore all the bad subjects, so people won't have any new ammunition, just more of the same confusion, which is already happening, so it won't be different, except there will be some good talking point alongside the bad ones.

Or they'll somehow make it worse and I don't even know what it will happen. It will surely be a kind of internet hate as mankind has never witnessed, maybe we, as a spescies, aren't even ready for this. I'll brains won't recognize it.

The human beings reading GAF will just shut down. It will be the first non-localized pestilence in human history. So many dead, and no one will ever be sure why.

It's multiple OS's and you gotta think about this here. The base OS might only use 1gb of ram, the remaining 2gb of ram might be for apps.
Who knows if there will be an Android style app store, where you can just download new 'plugins'

We know it skypes and browses, what about a native twitter, facebook, instagram app?
What about a netflix app or something more like XBMC? Who knows what applications you can get for this OS.

I don't think for a second they don't intend to 'ipad the living room' dominating the TV space with some kind of all in one PC in a box thing. I think TV isn't their only focus here.
I for one have 0 interest in the Xbox One but I forsee them supporting some kind of app store, allowing people to code cool tools. It could end up seriously big.

So yeah, 3gb of overhead is pretty sensible in that case.

They are region locked now though.

right, they called it xbox live..
other devices that do this are called smart tvs..with a console connected. They will get the popular iPhone and android apps ported over. like smart tv's..
I don't see how this isn't known, or that it isn't happening already in the living room.

it's a game console.

I don't expect my hammer to come with Wi-Fi, and surround sound. especially in a world where everything is connected to your hip, and tv out if you really cared?

Microsoft is imagining it's their job to reinvent the ease of current technology.everything is counterproductive to today's options that are so easy a child knows mommy's phone has angry birds. and it's backed up by sales of said tech.

Hey I didn't say you had to like it but these are the facts. (EDIT: speculation, not facts - just incase that's bannable or something...?? I'm just trying to put 2 and 2 together here)
What if the gaming portion is 'good enough'? I mean my favourite console I ever owned was my Xbox 1 - which was mod'd and did a shitload of stuff for me.

You will see iphone / android apps ported over, pretty much for sure (I believe) and some of it could be pretty great. Especially as the developers know they have fixed hardware to work with (Kinect, CPU, GPU etc) - plus it's x86 and based off Windows.

As long as the remaining hardware under the hood is ok then this could be a serious trojan horse into the loungeroom. I'm not counting MS out yet.

Everyone's favorite Polygon employee said on Rebel FM this week that he has also heard the downclocking rumors from a source. According to him the reason was actually the longevity of the product. At the original projected clockspeed they were projecting an Xbox One would last for 3 years before the hardware fails, on average. Reducing the clock speed would supposedly increase that to 5 years.

Hmm, the fact that even Arthur Gies (big Xbox fan, & former admin at TeamXbox) is parroting rumblings of further Xbox One downgrades lends even more credence to these rumors.

Of course you should bother coming tomorrow. You will get to read the server error messages from GAF crashing, per usual E3 traffic, instead of hearing about it from others. :P

I hope that RUMOR tag stays there next to "downclocking GPU."

They can have all the ESRAM issues they want, so long as their engineers do their job and solve the issue without compromising the originally planned specs. I'm an easy guy to please when it comes to video games. I haven't been upset or phased by any of the policies or features Microsoft has revealed with XB1... but downclocking the GPU would break my hype for this system. As long as it still says "rumour" there I can be happy.

Considering the fact that the Xbox One reportedly has much slower RAM, has much less RAM for game utilization, and has a 50% or more slower GPU than the PS4... a slight downclocking of the GPU shouldn't faze you in the slightest.

Wait. Your hammer didn't come with wifi?

Thanks, great news if true, for all concerned. Let's keep the lowest common denominator as strong as possible.

Unless... something else has been sacrificed.

No indication of that. I think MS has more than enough working against them already.

I hope that's the case. It's already a lot underpowered compared to the one in the PS4 (going by rumours).

It's definitely a decent gap between the two. Not huge, but decent.

Just wanted to pass along that I'm being told the GPU is not downclocked.

Seems to be possible - according to this thread (link) the PS4 seems to have a 2+:1 supply advantage over Xbone (Take it with a grain of salt).

This would mean they are eating their losses and hope to improve the yields over time. Would explain the 500$ pricetag as well.

http://gdgt.com/microsoft/xbox/one/specs/

Xbone. Gpu 500mhz!

Where they get this from? Crazy if true...

No way that's true. That kind of downclock would be absurd, and it'd mean tons of launch-window and first year games would have to be massively reworked and downgraded at the very last minute, meaning little to no time for actual QA before release. It'd be an unmitigated disaster.

I *do* think that PR/management disasters, as the Xbox One is proving to be, tend to keep going and going for a while rather than magically reversing course on a dime, but I don't think Microsoft is so stupid as to do something like this.

Low yields will be terrible for them too (few launch units, high prices), but not as terrible as a severe downclock like that would be, IMO.

That site also claims it has a removable hard-drive, which I believe the Xbox One was confirmed to not have. Or have I missed something? So probably not accurate.

Are you serious? It looks like a normal internal HDD. Why would they make it inaccessible?

Given the current layout of the internals it would be impossible to make the HDD accesible without allowing all of the guts exposed, which would obviously void the warranty. Given that they've said an external HDD can be utilized in the exact same manner as the internal one, it's preferable IMO since there are rear USB ports. Grab a cheap external HDD and just hide it behind the console.

500GB should hold 10~15 games. Or maybe i can flash a other hdd did the same with my 360.
Good enough for me if i would get a xbone.
Didn't rumors say something about diablo or blizzard like installers.
Install for like 2 min and start playing while the OS install laters levels in the back ground.
