Jeff Gerstmann Just Said Sony Decided on $399 Today

He heard a "rumor" floating around. Grain of salt and all that. I'd be surprised if they could just change the price at E3 without running it past a board of directors.

Big corporations make decisions as fast as glaciers move. There is no way in a million years they just decided it today.

it was planned all along!! *mindblown*

does it matter? now it's as good as sealed, sony's gotta keep onto their word.

who cares when they decided? Its a great price. MS marketing have their work cut out for them over the next 6 months.
I hope sony are aggressive with hammering home the cheaper price, better hardware and used games. I'd hate to see them stumble and lose the advantage because of some weak marketing

Anything to stop them looking stupid, I'm sure they think Sony just decided not to limit used games today too. Bullshit.

Sony said they designed the Vita from day one with the final price in mind.

Like I said, I was told £349 in February. They had this price point in mind from the word go. But they may have gone lower if the bone wasn't so expensive.

What was it previously? $499? $599? (lol)

Pachter was saying on Spike earlier today that Microsoft pricing the system so high meant Sony had more wiggle room to not have to underprice it. $349 was what he thought it was going to be. I wonder if that is who Jeff heard it from. Pachter was saying that Sony was probably editing that slide as he was speaking to GTTV.

I doubt they decided today the price would be $399. At most, they might have decided today to announce it and the price was already settled.

It had to have been up in the air for them and a "possible" price...if thats true then they probably were trying to 450 or 500 the PS4 also

ole decieving ass Sony.....

yea i'll probaby get one

I heard it was $399 from Sony themselves and that's all that matters. I really doubt they did this on a whim and maybe only decided to announce the price tonight as the finishing blow, but I really doubt they just made such a huge decision based on Microsoft's conference. MS gave them enough of an advantage without having to drop the price at the last minute just to compete. The price was probably already settled and the only possible last minute decision was to announce the price today or not.

We all "heard" shit about E3 that's not all accurate anyway...

He said that he heard from 3rd hand sources.

No I am saying that he said that that part was added today, not that they decided to price it at $399 today. They could have always intended to price at $399 and announce it later. Then Microsoft went $499 and they moved things around.

I guess they probably didnt want to confirm the price today and probably wanted more time to think about it but once they saw MS was going full on Sony 06 crazy at their show they decided to drop the bomb and go with 399.

Moments like that dont happen often enough. That was some "299" Sony 1995 stuff.

I think $399 for their smallest SKU was always planned. This is the same company that won't drop the price of Vita in US/EU.

I don't think he said that. He said that the price announcement was added today. Not that the price was decided today.
He's definitely wrong then. The announcement of the price, console, and release has been finalised for a good while now and was due to be announced at E3 prior to last week. SCE did have a range in place for the price, so maybe there is a bit of a loss in message once the word reached his ears.

"See, I never just did things just to do them. Come on, what am I gonna do? Just all of a sudden jump up and price my next-gen system at $399 like it's something to do? Come on. I got a little more sense then that.

Yeah, I remember pricing my system at $399."

I seriously doubt it. Sony is not foolish to just reactionary drop price as it will create loss of million for the company . Heck ps3 is still expensive than 360

Did he also say Sony just decided on used games after the microsoft conference? Because what he sounds ridiculous.
Giant Bomb has been a sore disappointment ever since this whole thing started.

GB not even once.

"I don't believe it so it can't be true so they're clearly a disappointment".

Brilliant.

As I said to a friend who smugly said to me that Sony probably set their price AND stance on DRM post Microsoft's conference, "who cares when they planned these things, Microsoft needs to make a lot of changes/new announcements and they need to do it quickly or there IS no race this gen."

I guess the price and all the drm stuff was decided in the last week if not days. It´s an all in. A very bold and risky move... but a much appreciated one.

Brilliant.

My comment was more about their attempts to accept MS' DRM/ No used games policy by repeatedly stating that Sony would implement the same policy. Based on no information whatsoever.

I had a feeling Sony would alter their price based on what MS went with, they probably went into E3 with a strategy of this is as low as we can go but we won't go that low if we don't have to.

I think that they probably planned to not reveal the price today but they couldn't resist when MS overpriced their box.

Fucking. Bullshit.

There's not even a minute chance that that could be true. You think Sony watched the MS conference and threw together their price slide accordingly? This shit is planned to the T and set months, if not years, back.

Microsoft somehow developed N64 Nintendo and PS3 Sony arrogance from simply being competitive this past generation.
It's probably what makes this more like the Saturn really: Sony more or less followed Nintendo's trajectory, albeit missing the lesson of releasing cheaper that they themselves should've seen with the Saturn fiasco and that even Nintendo themselves pointedly avoided (instead it was the games costing the Earth.) They weren't anywhere near the leader's position the first time through, the second time around they managed to get in a gridlock, even though by the end of the generation it's rapidly slipping from them (and neither won Japan by any stretch of the imagination), and for the third console they just blow up their good will. Maybe the Xbox fans will be more inclined to stay, especially given console ages and the online angle, but I doubt it'll be by enough.

It'll be funny if this ALSO mirrors the Saturn in that it ends up being Microsoft's only reasonably successful console in Japan despite their policies.

... Hmm, I was about to shoot that down as they couldn't know how much everything'd cost, but I realized my logic was backwards: they weren't planning ahead all the tech, they were planning at a price point and building the system to that most likely. After $599.99 they probably wanted to be AT LEAST $100 below their last console, and thus they put together what they could at $399.99. The fact that this didn't register as a good idea with Microsoft shows how messed they really care about their console I think.

that would be a little ridiculous.

reminds me of my high school days, being unprepared for a presentation and making it up on the fly based on bits and pieces liberally lifted from the people that presented before me, and also avoiding their mistakes.

This is the price I predicted based on tech and breaking even for some time.

DDR5 and other prices will drop and it'll be profitable soon.

/acts shocked

Honestly at that price point if they really did it at the last moment they did this to not only crush Microsoft but Nintendo as well.

They made this rash decision for us guys. They didn't go the drm route, so lets show our appreciation by buying the console and giving the middle finger to ms.
