Jeff Gerstmann Just Said Sony Decided on $399 Today

If they did decide the price point the day of, in what scenario would they actually change the price? Everyone knows that 600 was not a possibility because of the PS3. If they were determining the price the day of, Microsoft conference would have given Sony a perfect excuse to price it the same. Are we saying that Sony was actually thinking about going lower if MS priced their console at 400?

Based off this MS PR guideline thing (answers to questions about ps4) I've seen before the ps4 presser, it does seem like MS was ready for a a $100 difference.

Makes sense. both systems are similar speced but it's an easy guess that ps4 wouldn't have camera as mandatory so it would be cheaper.

They probably were caught off guard about DRM because there is nothing about that here.

I'm not surprised. In fact that's the impression I got. They figured "could we do this for $399" a few months ago and pulled the trigger to sink the XB1 once the price was announced. They will be losing (probably a lot of) money on this thing but I think the hope is that they struck a definitive blow and I largely think they did.

I actually figured they would they knew xbox was first so it gave them an idea.
I heard they were thinking 500 at first. I'm glad things just kinda worked for their way.

I would think if I was in Sony's position, going second, I would have come up with a range of prices planned out prior to the event that they could use to counter MS's price. Maybe coming up with plans for each price point isn't feasible for a massive company like Sony but it would seem like a missed opportunity if they didn't.

He is covering is ass he basically said all day Sony would do same DRM and price. The guy was dead wrong like a lot of us. I was sweating bullets on the DRM I figured only way MS would do it if Sony was to. Thank god I was wrong about that.

I don't see why people are shocked on price. The machine was made with keeping cost lower in mind. Outside the GDD5 the rest is very modest and very cheap to produce compared to every other most powerful console of its time.

This thread is very instructful in showing us who has worked and who hasn't. I bet the correlation of those who have worked or are working that also believe Sony wouldn't make a rash decision the day of is pretty high.

Am I tasting a little Gerstmann-branded salt?
Did you even watch the video?

I thought the slide with the prices looked cheaply-made. As if they had done it at the last minute.
What? Even if it was a "last minute" change, all they would have to do is change a single digit. You wouldn't have to redo the whole thing, nor would that even take more than 10 minutes if you did. It's a slide.

I was guessing they were going to see what MS was going to price at. If they priced at $399 then Sony probably would have said $349. I'm looking forward to that fat Wii U price drop.

$399 was the plan from the getgo I think with a possibility of $349 if MS grew some brains and priced the X1 reasonably.

And who cares because?

Exactly, who cares?

It was a great business move no matter when they decided, however, they said on Polygon it was already decided, Pachter predicted it well before, as well as our own insiders and another analyst.....

Too much Smoke well before yesterday for there not to be fire..

complete bullshit that a company of Sony's size and all they invested would decide in a matter of hours because of a reaction to press conference

Gaming journalism

Yeah I am going to side with the camp who thinks this is bullshit. You don't make such a major, costly decision on a whim.

It's possible that sony had 2 plans to bounce between depending on the xbox price, they have seemed to be well prepared for this since the feb announcement.

After MS' conference, I had told myself that if Sony doesn't go ahead with the DRM/Used games crap and that they sell the PS4 under 499$ (I had hoped 50$ less), they would take a hit, but it was a great strategy in the long run.

They just blew my fuckin' mind. O_____O

Didn't he also say the only people making a stink about Xbones restrictions were Sony fanboys? He has driven me crazy lately, and I like him...

I like to think all the DRM and Price was decided/changed by Jack Tretton in the 12 minutes that was between when the show was suppose to start and started.

Sony is underselling PS4 at that price tbh.

Casuals will eat up the whole deal of XB1 being much bigger and cost an extra $100, they'll assume that it's more powerful.

Word can get around.. but yeah, there are a lot of people out there that perceive that more $ = better. :S

$399 was always within the realm of possibility.

Hell, even I called it after the reveal.

$399 single sku. Nice and simple.

With the outsourced RnD and more industry standard parts, costs should come down relatively quickly for them equals more profit down the line.

Maybe they didn't intend to announce it here and saw an opportunity to twist the knife.

I do not believe this claim to be true, but frankly, I don't care when they decided it.

Companies don't make calls that big the day of E3.

I didn't hear that. I'm guessing your referring to Brad Shoemaker's claim that the ESRam yield thread was built up here because of frothing Sony fanboys who want to see MS fail. I don't think anyone at GB looked positively at the DRM. They did, however, seem to assume if MS was taking this step, Sony was sure to follow and there was nothing we could do about it. They were very wrong and I wanted to get their response to the news but they had to cancel their damn show because their damn gear was stolen.

they had to go 399, it would be insane to go 499. Xbox One is 499 but lets not forget its bundled with the Kinect 2.

What prevents MS from changing price sometime before November release as reaction to PS4 price?

They could mask it by introducing cheaper SKU (smaller hdd, different finish)

Mandatory PS+ will give them a great revenue stream, if anyone deserves the money it's Sony. Hopefully they break even.

It's ridiculous to think they decided on the price yesterday. That $100 is probably the difference between turning a profit and taking a loss on each console. I'd imagine they thought long and hard about it.

Unless Sony gave their Finance department a deadline of yesterday/today to run all the pricing analyses, including estimated revenue based on PS+, I highly doubt it was decided today.

I can believe, however, they decided to announce it today.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had a couple of different slides set up. One with just the PS4 for $399 and the other with PS4+camera for $449 or $499. And after seeing the Xbox One stuff they opted for the latter.
