He's definitely wrong then. The announcement of the price, console, and release has been finalised for a good while now and was due to be announced at E3 prior to last week. SCE did have a range in place for the price, so maybe there is a bit of a loss in message once the word reached his ears.

Sony slashed their operating margin in gaming business for FY on May 22nd. This was most likely due to pricing decision that was different from before.

Hirai, however, slashed his operating profit margin target for the gaming business to 2 percent in the year to March 2015, from an earlier outlook for 8 percent.

Did anyone listen to the Trenton interview with Geoff? Geoff pushed him on this topic something along the lines of did you plan multiple price points to respond to MS?

Trenton responded that it's impossible to be reactionary in this type of scenario especially with approvals and testing the price in markets. Sure, they may have planned different price points, but they said they were unable to go lower than $349. I think they were always leaning on $399, and the no DRM/used was the final blow just made it sweeter.

Also, I think Pachter said a BOM of ~$375? Slight profit, albeit a profit.

Trentton said on the gt interview they didnt change it because of the ms price, he said you cant do business like that i believe him to some extent, i guess they had two figures on the table and picked one based on ms pricing.

Patrick Klepek did an interview with Scott Rohde @ Sony and the question of whether the price was a last minute reaction to Microsoft was debunked. Scott said the $399 price was targeted for years.
