Forza 5: Behind the scenes look (video) [Up: 1080p/60fps]

OOF! Just see the Spa semi-confirmation. Awesome!

So I've been watching some Forza 5 interviews and I'm really starting to get intrigued with the new Drivetar thing. It seems like the game will be constantly evolving as new player based AIs are created to race against. Then I watched this interview with Indycar racer Tony Kanaan at some MS E3 party where he's saying that he plays Forza so you might end up racing against his and other real professional driver's AIs. That sounds awesome depending on how good those AI simulations will end up being in terms of mimicking people's real driving styles and decisions.

Yep, Drivatar has me quite excited too. It could be an absolute game-changer for the single-player experience.

Yeah Drivatar sounds like a great solution to a common problem. In theory, it is very sound. Hopefully it works as good as it sounds..

With regards to car count, I'll be very upset if modern and supercars make up the majority of the cars. But, knowing Turn 10, they will not do this going by their previous games. They have a remarkable knack of being very balanced, very diverse in their line ups.

So SPA hey?

Fucking finally!!!!!!!!

All that's needed now, is Mount Panorama and i'm all set. I hope to God that it's in. Turn 10, you wont let us down in this regard right?
You will make us proud.

Honestly, this is all I need:

Mount Panorama
Australian classic cars
More upgrades/tuning/customization options
Great audio

Add in all that's known so far and I'm in racing heaven..

The image Spaceman Spiff posted has a 'sports compact' league which suggests non-übercars will be included.

Reading between the lines of what Dan's repeatedly said in interviews I've no doubt the car roster is still vastly reduced over FM4 though.

I just hope they blow us away with the track count. Like, totally blow us away.

The menu somehow reminds me of Grid2 and Codemasters' racers in general. Hope it's not worse than FM4 which was next to perfection.

yeah i also expect the car roster to be cut down the moment the trailer said "hundreds of cars". if you have as much as before or more, you market it with "500+ cars".

but as long as this is about SUVs and some bullshit sedans, i dont care. never used them anyway. (though its nice to have). aand i am sure we will miss some gems. everyone has this special care he loves but others dont. think these are the first ones to be sacrified.

edit
happy to see leagues coming back. fm2 style was far better than fm3/4.

Holy shit, just read this in the Jalopnik article:

And, like I mentioned at the beginning, the skies are now populated. Helicopters, hot air balloons, confetti, and I was even told there's tracks with what looks like "a zepplin battle" happening in the air.

I DEMAND ROYALTIES!

This was also very nice to hear:

By crappier I mean more like real materials — orange peel on paint, machining marks on metals, rubber and oil and other detrius being stuck to a car after a run, and — though we didn't get to see it last night — a dynamic dust layer.

What if its Blue Mountain?

Yep.
One of the criticisms I have for GT and Forza, is that they are too clinical, too cold in regards to atmosphere and detail. It's like everything is perfect.
Seeing and hearing Dan and the team use words like imperfection, human and natural sends tears of joy trickling down my cheeks.
In one of the screens of a BMW wheel, you can see some scuff/machine marks on the rim. I didn't expect Turn 10 to go that far in terms of detail.
I've always said that it's the little things that matter...

What if its Blue Mountain?

I'll fucking die!
Blue Mountains is not and never will be a substitute for Mount Panorama. Never.
The Europeans have their legendary Spa. I expect Oceania to have their legendary Mount Panorama.

Come on, detective-GAF: what's the city shown in the Grand Touring League (New York???) and what's the location with the palm trees in the Sport League (RIO?????)?

Yes ,mate. Yes. That's the attitude I want to see.

If i'm not mistaken, the city in question is.....East London

Awright geeezzaa! It would be great ter see london in da game. Especially da east end. Mascot would love i' im sure! Sorted mate.

Pleased for Spa. Really want Bathurst as well though. If I hear that I'll preorder an xbone tomorrow.

I'm pleased that next gen can render glowing brake rotors a lot better too.

Wow - you just moved the goal posts 100km within the space of a few sentences. Never change man.

Obviously, my initial comment was made in reference to tracks.
Second statement referred to the game as a whole.

Thanks anyway.

I'm not sure I'm totally digging the design of those logos or whatever you call them. The ones in FM4 were nice, but those just look kind of... generic.

Yeah, I'm not too keen on them either. There's no cohesion.

I'm liking the use of the Eurostile font though in 'LEAGUE SELECT' (it's also used on the UI, speedo etc). Seems like it's come back into vogue. I used that one everywhere on design projects back in the early 1990s. I've always liked it.

Looks like Eurostile Extended, anyway.

Sorry if you took that as a negative comment - 'twas meant in jest. I love your passion and dedication to the series and all things legendary, like VL Commodores.

They haven't shown me a single fucking MUSTANG.....nor have they announced a Limited Edition of the game yet. Still on the fucking fence.

T10 gave a very misleading image of FM5 with those trailers.

It appears the game is more 'serious' than ever in regards to pure sim aspects.

Old tracks redone and laser scanned
Focus on real life circuits
SPA
Long beach (maybe)
Indy car and open wheelers.
Reworked physics
Realistic tyre wear

Reduced number of cars (while heart breaking) seems to indicate they didn't just lift them from FM4+Horizon. One would hope they finally trashed FM1 inheritance and, i would expect, redid some of those for accuracy *

This doesn't sounds too bad, actually.

T10 seems to be willing to start over, ironing out all the inaccuracies. Losing content by leaving the burden of its ancient predecessors behind, all the small things that have been pissing cars and tracks enthusiasts off and holding back the game. I'm ok with that.

* Now, i guess i'll have to see how many and which cars did it. FM4 has the best, most varied, most complete car selection ever, to see them taking a step back is disappointing.
I appreciate forzavista-ing them all, it's a huge commitment.
At this point i'd rather have...a premiums and standards approach, here. EVERY car in FM4 was more than next gen ready, anyway, with interiors and a polycount in the 500k range, it's not a GT5 scenario.
(Jalopnik claims FM5 cars cars have 25% more polys compared to FM4 btw.)
Then again, if the cars we're missing are the PT cruisers and some of the cars the game has been carrying over from FM1 for the last decade, that's not too bad.

Turn 10's approach is far better than PD's.

Every car will be autovista. That is amazing if you ask me.

I can't wait to see GT7 on the PS4 with PS2 era cars.

Holy shit. Have a look at the font used for the timer and on the speedo:
B0hrCU3.jpg

I knew I'd seen it somewhere before!

And what is this ?

sport5rzmo.jpg

palms in a city track.
that doesn't look like long beach
not positano either. unless it's some part of the long positano i'm less familiar with.

Only 25% more polygons? I suppose with 1080p and some real AA that isn't too bad.

FM4 cars are already 350k - 500k polys. More than enough for next gen, and the gen after that (with some tessellation :P which isn't really needed anyway)

Roflcopter! I was going to mention the PGR connection, but then I thought "Mmm... let's just wait to see if Shaneus spots it".

You didn't let me down son. I'm amazed you didn't spot it earlier.

Very nice, but that low roofline cut out the helicopters!

I'm really liking the subtle little hand adjustments on the steering wheel. And that car looked FUCKED at the end. Damage modelling does look much improved (but carbon fibre still bends incorrectly instead of breaking or splintering).

yep, localized damage.
Unfortunately this will probably lead to melting headlights syndrome :)

Yeah, I edited my post to mention carbon fibre not breaking. It still deforms like metal. Hopefully they have deformation exclusion zones where the headlights are and we have shattered polycarb lenses etc.

Are the FM5 demos running on PC hardware?

So, they were hiding the actual hardware, which I figured was probably some dev Xbox One units or something. And I'm curious. I wondered what these units looked like, so I decided to peek behind one of the cabinets. It was dark, so I took a couple quick photos with my flash so I could see.

What I saw was profoundly underwhelming. Just a laptop and a bunch of wires. I was just about to forget about the pictures entirely and find the guy who walked by with the raw tuna somethings when a massive goon packed into a fancy suit approached me.

"You need to come with me, sir," he said.

Mmm. Interesting.

Edit: fuck me, another DP. This thread has stalled!

on what else? do you think there are 100 xbox one prototypes?

I've no idea, but I'd heard that FM5 was running on Xbox One hardware (devkits or prototypes) so this article came as a big surprise. How do we know that the PC hardware's target specs won't be more powerful than Xbone turns out to be? Well, we don't, but I do find this revelation a little disconcerting.

You do realise that at this point a devkit is a PC that's built to have an appropriate level of power right?

Yeah, I had it in my head that FM5 was running on prototypes or something. I am a silly billy.

The devkits aren't laptops though, are they? Can you even get a laptop with Xbone specs?

Not surprising given the thread about the game crashing back to a Windows 7 based HP computer.

Link?

All good sir!

From years back...

A lot of people in this part of the world are very interested in Bathurst..

Wendl: The great race!

Gameplanet: Exactly – they'll want to know why it hasn't been included in Forza 4?

Wendl: We have limited time and resources, and each time we look at which tracks will make the cut, we can only do so many new tracks per title. Just like how we pick cars, it's always a tough decision. Bathurst is always high on the list, and we have to go through a selection criteria to see what is going to appeal. Often times, we have to make sure we don't get blinded by our own passion, whether that's cars or tracks, because we're trying to build a game for millions of people around the world. We use a weighted system based on geography, and popularity, and community requests, and pop culture and what's most relevant in all the markets around the world, and it's always a difficult decision. It didn't make the cut this time, but it's always high on the list for consideration, and I would imagine that at some point we'll be seeing it in a future version of Forza because it's a cool track and a cool event, it's one of the most famous races in the world and we'd love to get it in there.

No More Exuses lol..

Fuck yeah man, this approach is excellent. Fresh start with deep knowledge and correcting poor work although standards wise T10 leads most of the time across the board.

This gives them excellent room to grow hardcore.

People need to support T10 man...

Doesn't really mean much. Xbox 360 games were running on powermac G5s at it's launch E3.
