Here's a question. If the 3DS version only is going to have customization, shouldn't the Wii U version also have some sort of distinguishing content? It would be kind of lame if it was an inferior version with better graphics.

Well at the moment it has far better graphics (I feel it's worth emphasizing this since for as surprisingly decent the 3DS version looks, the Wii U version at 1080/60fps completely destroys it), a different, more console-focused stage selection, wii pad support and (probably) better Miiverse integration.

Plus you can bring whatever that customization aspect winds up being into the console version, so it's not being left out on that front either.

It was a fan-made hoax several years back before DKCR came out claiming it was leaked concept art for a final boss fight with a Tiki-themed K. Rool. Blatantly false, but was still a fun concept.

Well they have completely different stages from the way they've been wording it.

That and they've been mentioning that you can trade customized characters between the two versions, so you can probably customize in both.

To be fair the technology (especially in terms of lighting and proper texturing effects beyond basic bump-mapping) really wasn't there in the early 90's when most of that DKC art was made. I don't think it looks amazing, but given the limitations they were under and how IMO it way aged better than everything else everybody was doing with CGI (including Rare themselves in Killer Instinct) until around when Abe's Odyssey/FF8 hit, I can't really bring myself to hate it. It's served its purpose back in '94 for the SNES at any rate.

Also every time the NES game is released on the virtual console it has a long life on the charts. The series should have one installment every home console cycle, it continues to sell and has a fanbase that can grow.
