Angry Joe: Major Nelson Interview (Xbox One) E3 2013

Basically, this is how all interviews with Microsoft go:

Q: "Why are you guys limiting your audience with restrictive DRM and region locks?"
A: "Family plan. It's the way of the future."

That seemed pretty good. Probably really hard to do an interview on the spot for both parties. In all honesty i havent really watch angry joe in a while and things were not as good but he seems to have improved immensely. Maybe ill check it out again.

On a side note, the family plan is freaking awesome.

Have to say major Nelson did a good job. He has a tough job right now and think people are trying to find stuff to get outrage about.

Like cboat said....

I get that, but honestly, I would have completely lost it with him at some points, even more so when he interrupted him with the lawyer and "do you want to come to the future" part, and the whole fact he completely derailed the interview at some point, with the whole "steam has no family plan etc"

You would have lost it? We are discussing game consoles and internet. It's not that big of a deal...

People act like they are literally forced to buy the next Xbox. No reason to "LOSE IT" at a guy that is doing his job and is actually quite good at it.

It's angryjoe and his fan base that make me completely sick of the gaming community. Passion is great, but if you have to turn that into complete anger that is just immature. Use your words.

Angry Joe needed to be a little more coherent in his questions - he was a bit all over the place.

Kind of. He got a bit off track anytime Larry was getting agitated. Almost as if he wanted to keep the ball rolling so the guy didn't flip out. That actually had the opposite effect. You could tell he was getting angrier that Joe would start to move to a new question.

I actually like Joe btw. And I like that he grilled Major Nelson with all the really tough questions. I just wish he would have let the questions sit a little longer.

EDIT: But he did say the MS guys were rushing him through the interview. So it's understandable.

In my opinion, the "Angry" facet of Angry Joe is a bit of a misnomer; he does way better when he's calm and collected than when he's pushing the "angry" gimmick. What he does more shows to me that it's a form of passion for gaming than anger a lot of the times.

Exactly this. He doesn't seem like a bad guy, he just has to put a spin on all the bad shit right now. I would say I feel bad for him but I dont because he gets paid pretty good to do that.

Look journalists. AJ asking all right questions, one after another, and all hard questions because it concerns a ton of people.

Loved that interview.

This is false.

Sony actually allows something similar to that on the ps3.

Not with 10 people.

One harmless question: I remember what Bish wrote during E3... is Bgamer90 a shill?

Dude is probably the most pro-microsoft user on this forum.

He works harder at spinning things than M.N.

bish?

That some users in this forum had some suspicious e-mails and agendas.

Some made it pretty obvious. Others didn't.

I ask because everything coming out of Bgamer's mouth about the xbone is all roses and sunshine.

Not by a long shot. He's clearly very MS-pro, but not blatant shill. I've seen some real doozies in the past few weeks.

Haha, you guys are really sad.

I already said that if you care about physical media then PS4 is the obvious way to go. But nope, "I'm a MS shill".

Like I said before, I just prefer whatever system I play games on the most. Last gen was the PS2. This gen was the 360. Next gen? Don't know yet.

____________________

All kinds of crazy-ass stuff that seems like he's making an effort to praise things that aren't actually good.

The only thing I've "praised" was the family plan itself. Nothing else.

I don't think I've ever agreed with anything he's said on this forum. I was going to say something in response to him but I've seen his twitter and he seems real enough to me. Just bad opinions from my point of view.

Different people can be different? Wow.

He's purely an Xbox fanboy. Though I don't know what kind of Xbox fanboy calls Halo 4 "a breath of fresh air" and "the first addictive Halo multiplayer." But maybe he just loves CoD.

*Halo 4 was my most played Halo this gen. Know many people didn't like it but I did. And I said it was "the first addictive Halo multiplayer this gen" for me. Man, if you are going to talk about me then you could at least get what I say right and not out of context.

*Don't like COD at all anymore. Was tired of the game about 3 years ago.

*I own/play multiple systems outside of Xbox.

Assumption fail.

Are there any journalists/publications that are outright hostile to Microsoft at the moment?

1. There is no such thing as too open if it protects consumer rights and also benefit consumers in a positive way.

So if multiple products in a store were open to be bought by any user for free it wouldn't be too "opened"? How could the people who created the items make money from them?

I'm not saying this in terms of any consoles --- simply saying it in terms of what you said. That example I used above would be greatly pro consumer but from the people making the products, it would be "too opened".

It is too open if you look at it from the multibillion dollar corporation who wants to nickle and dime you till you die, do you work for them?

Haha, I don't work for MS or any of the other big game companies.

You don't think that Sony or Nintendo wants to nickel and dime you either?

This is nonsense so not even going to address it, your logic is pretty much deniable. People who have bad internet connection will not be able to take advantage of 10(2) family shared plan and thats a good thing because "pretzel logic" Piracy.

I never said it was a good thing. I simply said that publishers wouldn't have to worry about it as much as you are making it out to be since many wouldn't be able to take full advantage of it.

The 10 people family plan is limited to 2 people so more? NO

Um... it's more in terms of who I can share things with on consoles. 2 < 10. Kindergarten math.

PS4 is better for anyone who wants to go Physical and Digital, you are given the option to choose if you want Physical or Digital with less restriction. In fact you can just buy a PS4 and PS+ and have access to free games every month by just spending a little less than you pay for XLive

More info needs to be given about both systems but like I said before, if I can share my games with more people than just 2 and get games faster with faster updates then I'll still say that the Xbox One will seem to be the better system for digital.

Please you aren't fooling anyone, anyone who goes out of their way to use some pretzel logic to justify their purchase or start making up nonsense about PSN to justify their purchase has already made up their mind, and guess what? I DONT CARE.

You say you don't care but yet you keep on replying to me, even when you previously said you were "done". YOU CARE.

Again, you aren't me. Your assumption that I made up my mind before I learned details about the family plan is stupid, immature, and wrong.

I guess you would be surprised if you knew how I was acting after Sony's E3 conference.

Good luck with all 10 of you playing at the same time.

Heh, I'm not interested in it because I think that 10 people could play at the same time (knew from the get-go that wouldn't be possible). I'm interested in it because me and 10 others could save a lot of money. 10 other people = more people (obviously) = more games to try out/share.

So NO, in terms of what I care about it is NOT more restrictive in terms of digital.

That's you/your opinion then.

and you would be WRONG. Buy your console of choice and again i urge you to refrain from trying to spin PSN into something it is not. It is not more restrictive to current XLive and neither will it be more restrictive to seemingly future XLive.

I'm not trying to spin anything.

10 is more than 2 is it not?

Peace, try harder.

Peace... again... before you come back and reply to me again even though "you don't care".

Put a person of authority in front of these so called "voice of the angry people" and they shrivel up like a scared turtle.
Oh come on, there's no reason to be an asshole to someone just because you disagree with his company's policies.

His answer to shutting down servers is so bad. He uses it in another interview as well. He's asked if people have to worry about the servers ever being shut down and what that will mean. His answer is "We haven't even launched yet. Why are we talking about shutting down?"

Obviously people are asking this because they want to know before they buy. It's basically saying "man that is so far off, why would you ever even think about it right now?"

Nelson literally taking the microphone away from Angry Joe during the last question was probably one of the most disrespectful things I have seen in a video game related interview.

People actually like this Nelson guy?

Not that I'm aware off.

All these Xbone policies are making me dizzy. So yes a PS4 it is no hassle just games for me and my friends. I hope joe is going to post something here to talk about it.

But honestly, why would you even be thinking about that right now? Shit I can't even confidently say that I WILL be around in 8 years. If you are making a purchasing decision based on the length of a console over 8 years, that's pretty nuts.

It's a fair question, just nothing you should stress over...

That was annoying to watch. And not because of angry joe.

As soon as he got to the nub of the question - the real purpose of the infrastructure for drm - PR hops in and calls for the next question.

I was never really talking about trading games locally. I was talking about why the disc restrictions were more than likely needed to balance out what MS wants to do when it comes to letting users share digitally.

Why are these things connected?

Why wouldn't you be thinking about that? Should people not worry about the coverage of a new car at 50,000 miles because they haven't even driven it off the lot yet?

does anyone agree that responding to server plans in the future with ' well we havent even launched etc etc that is something we will deal with later' is a massive omission for someone looking to preorder? are we meant to take a leap of faith here? good interview and respect to major who obviously doesnt have the info

Why wouldn't you be thinking about that? Should people not worry about the coverage of a new car at 50,000 miles because they haven't even driven it off the lot yet?

No, because a car is extremely expensive and is important for your safety and your job and your life and your children. If a game console MIGHT not load some of your games from 8 years ago, it's not the end of the world. Like I said, it's nice to know how seriously Microsoft will take this digital age thing and if support for it is a never ending importance. But it is just weird getting riled up about it or putting that much thought/care into it...

(also can we stop with the car analogies when it comes to games? (Also no, DLC is not like the dealer locking your glove-box and making you pay for it either people))

Major Nelson: "I'm sorry, are you an engineer? I'm sorry, are you a financial analyst? I'm sorry, are you a lawyer?"

Damn, you sure need a lot of degrees to criticize the Xbox One.
Reply with: "I'm a potential customer. Those things are irrelevant. Now convince me to buy your product".

Consumers also like convenience too.

Would iPod have done better if it had a CD player? Maybe.

Overall though, as long as enough people are reading for it, the convenience can be a major selling point to many.

No offense but your prognosticating track record recently isnt so great recently since you thought it was "obvious" that Sony was also going to have an online requirement, "pretty sure" they would have used game restrictions after Xbox's polioces were announced, thought the Xbox One was going to be $400 and the PS4 $450, and stated that a price point above $400 would hurt them significantly and previously stated of used game restrictions in general:

Bgamer90 said:
overall I highly doubt that the rumors in this area are true since it would be a large cut in the potential userbase of the system... people who would pay money to play (used) games (offline).

Funny how the things you previously stated in various threads were weaknesses of PS4 (theoretical higher price point, lack of backwards compatibility) and things would be alienating features of any system (restricting used games) are now moot points when it turns out that the Xbox One has all those problems because it has this arcane "family" sharing thing that apparently negates all of those weaknesses...

Game sharing on Ps3 was wi 5 people. Then Sony dropped it to 2, presumably from publisher pressure.

So is this 'share with 10 family' just something made up by MS and they haven't actually run it past publishers yet? I can see this being one of the only positives from MS, but I can also see it dying in a fire pretty quickly. Certainly not something I'd base a purchase on until more is known.

And if publishers do allow 10 people to share (probably owner + 1 other at a time), then Sony should work on matching it. Remove the 'need to be logged in on other machine' restriction and let you tag 'family' members from your friends list and give them access to your digital content

The Final Bosman.

But god damn, Nelson comes off as such an asshole in that interview. Can't believe he grabbed the mic out of Joe's hand to get that last word in. Ridiculous.

Good on Joe for doing his best there - not an easy situation to handle.

I thought that was extremely disrespectful too. I can't help but get douche chills every time I see Larry Hryb being interviewed.

The arrogance and hubris on the part of MS during this whole Xbone fiasco has been amazing.

Pubs may be OK with it because it's really only two people simultaneously, and only for single player modes. And the more people get added a group the more contention you have. When Sony did 5, it was 5 simultaneous, no contention. I think that kind of liberty rubbed pubs the wrong way.

Not with 10 people.

What?
I buy DLC on one account and it will work on all accounts on my PS3. Or did you mean "not 10 people, but on all accounts, which is actually better". Of course that's limited to 2 PS3s at once (was 5 PS3s). And if we are really talking about actual families, then that should be enough. If we are talking about "family" as in "some random friends that I gameshare with", then sure, that 2 PS3 limit will be a problem.

Although I doubt that they will allow "family" to be anyone including changing that "family" at random. I guess you will probably set someone once and then it will stay that way, which would make sense, because actual "family" doesn't change. Which means the system couldn't really be used for the typical random friends game sharing. Don't think Microsoft is stupid. Sony allowed it previously for 5 and had to change it, because the system got abused. If there is way to abuse it in that way, they will lower the limit as well.

EDIT: wow, what a jackass. Taking the mic from Joe. smh "this is the future", hey jackass you are not apple and you never will be. Stop pretending.

Wow.

It was obvious before with Bgamer90 but now it's just ridiculous. He is very disingenuous.

I'm not trying to spin anything.

I kind of like Major Nelson but in this interview he was kinda douchey. Redirecting some of the questions back to Joe to 'answer' and avoid the question. He was also a bit cocky.

Major Nelson still doesn't give clear information. They just need to give a fact sheet of clear information.

That was annoying to watch. And not because of angry joe.

Not all that different than what Sony PR did during the earlier interviews about DRM and used games, etc.

Anyway, so what's the final word? Family share allows two people to the play the same game at the same time, but only in single player?

DLC sharing is very surprising if it's true, didn't expect that at all.

Glad to see someone call him out, dude is a spinning machine who doesn't realize how contradictory he has been.

This was a great interview.

AJ is someone that gamers can relate to and identify with, you can easily put yourself in AJ's shoes which only makes people like us think that MN wouldn't treat us any differently.

I would go so far as to say AJ respected MN too much.

So theoretically, one copy of a game can be played by 21 people? I don't think this is something publishers are looking forward to. But if it is correct, man serious sharing groups will have to be formed.

Single players games that use any "cloud" type feature will also be only one person at a time.

The way he describes the pressure and the anymosity from the people at MS...

No wonder games junnalism doesn't exist, even angry Joe doesn't have the spine to ask the hard questions.

Look at this rude snakeoil salesman interupting his questions, deflecting, weasling out of questons, gross.

He did ask the hard questions, and he was going to ask more but he was cut of by MS PR. Angry Joe did his best under the circumstances and asked tough questions. Undoubtedly he has been blacklisted by Microsoft now and should not expect another interview in the future.

I just wanted to get a closer look at that twitter name, turns out it does not exist (lol).
