Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

some melee classes have a skill that increases your TP, i know lnc have 1 when i leveled in on beta 2, i think marauder had one on 1.0 but not sure currently

I've only taken MRD to level 17 this beta but I didn't see one. It would be nice if I got one though.

and you're not supposed to burn out your tp, you get way too much hate in a pt

What if you're the tank? Also, during the longer story instance fights where I was solo, I was able to burn my TP out before the fight was over. Fortunately the game gives me 16 NPCs and a healer besides in those instances so after my TP is out, I just stand there and watch the NPCs kill the boss.

and if you're soloing an enemy that uses up all your tp i'd say you're underleveled against it

Not if you're trying to solo a FATE boss or something.

PGL was really boring in the low levels of 1.x, but fun in the higher levels. So I think what you're seeing people react to is that it's better in the low levels and extrapolating that out to the high levels.

I'm sure TP management, etc. will be a big factor in the higher levels when you have more actions and options, and not just leveling on weak mobs.

That's totally fair, but I'm also tired of the idea that combat early on has to worse (in a MMO)... hell, I hate huge level differences in the first place!

EDIT: To me, the ideal would be they take all of these neat mechanics/gimmicks you find later on and make them so central to the game that there is a bunch of shit happening within the first ten levels. Combos, directional combat, abilities feeding into each other, stances, status effects, etc (and mechanics from other games, why not: stagger gauge, etc). Then build on them creatively. But whatever, that's not relevant.

Honestly it's not my thing but you should play GW2 if you haven't. There's not as much 'progression' but it doesn't hide anything from you past like level 10.

Truth be told, I won't play a MMO that isn't someway related to Final Fantasy XI. I'm more interested in XIV being better than finding a better MMO.

Guessing damage dealing classes will probably be the most popular like usual? I don't wanna wind up like I did in FFXI as thief being totally shunned.

Because of the way the game worked before, MNK and BLM were the most popular for endgame stuff. But I don't see that happening again this time, really - that was mostly an artifact of the dumb speedruns for some of the endgame/Relic weapon stuff.

There are never enough tanks, though. ALWAYS need more tanks.

They do a good job of balancing alot of the end game fights. In 1.0 for the most part you needed a little of everything to complete alot of the stuff. Nice thing about this game is you can switch classes as you wish so level a fighting class and magic class and you'll be good.

Yes tanks are good we had a few by the end which was nice as I was tanking so much lol. I wonder how Warrior is gonna be now because they made a pretty good tank class and alot of people were using it over the Paladin.

Ya it was boring for me too.... and people saying it's much improved than previous incarnation... holy hell.

How's archer? I was a ranger in FFXI, but all I ever did was hit 1 over and over and over and over since they had no auto attack or anything. It was torture.

Archer wasn't bad. Only got up to level 11 or so, but definitely see that the skills are having nice synergy with each other. Poison an enemy, use Straight Arrow for the critical chance buff, Heavy Arrow till the poison and critical chances run out and then use when enemy at 20% HP skill for more damage.

Does help that you have auto attack and can basically run around when you are using a skill to try and avoid damage (even though I was never too sure if I managed to do that).

Sure I probably looked silly running circles around enemies but I had fun with it.

If people are serious about tanking, they should probably have both.

MRD was maybe slightly better or the same in a few instances, but for Aurum Vale and Cutter's Cry is was pretty much PLD all the time.

I really enjoyed the game this weekend. I got my archer up to 15 and it was pretty fun. I'm really anxious to get to try out the jobs eventually- I'm aiming for brd and whm atm since those were my mains on FFXI and I loved them.

Are you able to do the beginning quests in other cities to level up other classes or is it pretty much just grinding/FATE spamming/hunting log?

i was thinking healers, DD casters (not melee), tanks will be the ones in really high demand
support and melee DD won't be

yeah if you haven't done the quests in the other cities you can use them to level up other classes

Apparently the starting quests are locked to your first class only, and thus aren't available in other cities once you get to them.

There will be other quests, of course, but FATE/Hunting Log/Leveling Dungeons/etc. are probably how subsequent classes will level up.

Huh?

Someone in the other thread was saying they went to Limsa to try and level a second class and they were all closed?

Will this game have the same main / sub class system from FFXI?

No, it's more like Final Fantasy Tactics - you can equip abilities from other classes to customize your ability loadout, and the levels of the abilities aren't limited.

Classes, which are more for solo, can use any non-exclusive abilities from other classes.

Jobs, which are for solo play, can use any non-exclusive abilities from a subset of classes.

In 1.0, I found classes not to be worth it even while solo. I think that's going to be even more true with this game.

I reached level 15 Conjurer and 5 Archer, it was really fun. I enjoyed it more than I probably should have, it doesn't really bring anything new to the table but it really took out a lot of the annoying parts that have been staples of MMO's for a long time.

I love how I don't have to go "buy" my skills and upgrade them with a teacher every 1-2 levels, I love how my armor is saved when I change classes, and it's so simple I can change classes on the go! It's fantastic. I don't have to loot every damn enemy(this is amazing, seriously)

I still don't know if I'm going Bard or White Mage, but this game so far is great and I can't wait to dive and play with some of you guys.

Edit: A little question, does it ever get hard to level the other classes over the lack of low level quests or are there several starting zones?(I know there are 2)

Ok, So I've been playing the beta for the first time for the last 3 days and judging from what I played I have really enjoyed it so far. So much so that I am seriously considering jumping into the full version upon release.

Anyone else get the sense that a lot of the male armors looked a bit too... feminine? At least The midlanders I ran across. The starter armor for example has the guys wearing ridiculously high boots and some leather brace right out of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Some of the "job" armor previews looked down right horrible (seriously, high-heels?).

I'll be sure to check out the other races next time. I really wanted to go midlander since I always like to pick the most stat even class but it was incredibly hard to get a more rugged look going with those guys.

I wanted to be Midlander since that's what I was in XI, but felt they looked like teenagers. So now I'm a big burly Highlander!

Elezen are definitely wispier than Elvaan, though.

And I wouldn't worry about the stat differences - they're going to be even more minimal in 2.0 than they were in 1.x, and gearing and stat building is really flexible. So just pick what you think looks cool.

I think if you master the Ice/Fire mechanic, BLM will be a lot more powerful because it actually has staying power now.

Ice probably needs to be toned down a bit, though, since it's basically impossible to run out of MP with it up, it seems.

That's on purpose ravi, you have no mana regen when you are in astral fire mode and seeing how at max level you will have 3 stacks of fire making fire cost 4x as much.... With 1 stack I was barely getting about 5 fire cast off before being drained. Yeah that regen needs to be there.

Blizzard does really shitty damage compared to fire with astral fire up as well.

Mix in instant cast thunders off random thunder ticks and random chances to get a instant cast fire 3 cast off fire 1 which also instantly gives you astral fire 3. THM alone has plenty interesting with it. That's not even getting into the BLM stuff yet *I have no idea what that will be*

After playing the PS3 beta, I think I'm gonna grab a PS3 copy when it hits this August. I already have a copy of the PC version (old one), plus the cover art on the console release is nnnnnghhhhh.

Really liked what I played.

That was another problem too. Hate the typical anime hero look they have going.

I didn't expect there to be a huge difference between races anyhow, most mmos are getting a way from that. It's just a cosmetic thing now.

I dig everything about the Highlanders except their facial and hair options, but I found some that work for me.

I actually even like Roegadyn this time around? Which is a surprise.

haha The boots were one of my favorite things about that outfit! I made (and plan to make for the release) a male highlander. I loved the default outfit and some of the stuff I've seen look surprisingly cute. I'm a girl, though, so I may just be proving your point. lol

I wish there were younger looking male Roegadyn options. I do love that you can have black hair on Hellsguard, though.

I honestly thought the game had glitched out and gave me the female clothing on my male character. Haha. I know it's a cultural thing though... Japan loves it's androgynous pretty boys. At least they gave us some more options this time (FFXI had like 2 faces that didn't look like little boys).

Also it's going to be fucken hard to get use to the new names.

so... someone data mined the beta clients and some items are out

Where is the Enhancing Magic on my beloved Darklight Gloves? ;_;

Just be a Highlander and never wear a shirt. Done.

Also, you owe me back from the XI days, so I humbly beseech you to join us on Sargatanas.

Next weekend the beta reopens, right? Are characters deleted from this past weekend?

You'll still have the characters you made this weekend (if you made them, that is), but all the Phase 3 stuff will be wiped when Phase 4 starts. So go ahead and experiment; it's still the "pre-season" and the stats don't count, as they say.

Does ANYONE pick female Roegadyn? I honestly might do that for the final version just because no one else is.

I did..... I loved the way she looked.

I don't think I'll ever get used to the names. I can't even get it right when I'm quoting a post! (I meant to say midlander rather than highlander oops) I'll probably just call them by their FFXI names forever.

I did, i wish i could tone her body profile though, i would prefer a slimmer Female Roe

it's probably missing alot of other stats/special abilities.

I'm more interested in the job's new abilities.

warriors to be beasting?

Ability: Defiance
Increases maximum HP by 25%, while lowering damage dealt by 35% and increasing enmity.
Effect ends upon reuse.
Using certain actions while under the effect of Defiance will grant Wrath. Each unit of Wrath increases critical hit rate by 2%.
When five units are stacked, you will become Infuriated. All Wrath is lost when Defiance ends.

Ability: Infuriated
Instantly grants five units of Wrath, changing status to Infuriated. Can only be used when Defiance is active.

Ability: Unchained
Nullifies the damage penalty inflicted by Defiance.

...Well, they did remove the Enhancing Magic stat entirely, you know? ;)

I do wonder at those dat-mined items, though. I hope it's missing some information, because at the moment the Relic weapons seem to be just normal weapons. I liked the idea of them enhancing some skill in a specific way (same with the AF armor).

It's amazing how much harder the Benchmark they released is on my system than the actual beta client. The Benchmark can make my machine drop to 25 fps in some parts, but the beta client was locked at 60 fps the whole time. Although, the Benchmark is actually working with AA and the beta client isn't. So the Benchmark might be a better measure of real performance once they get AA implemented.

If I wanted to make a female character, it would be a female Roegadyn. Honestly though, I think some gear sucks for girls and I don't want to deal with that.

I'm pretty sure your real life situation requires male Highlander or Roegadyn. :P
Hah, actually these are the two races I've been trying to choose from. I was Roegadyn in 1.0 and Highlander in phase 2/3. I think I'm gonna go with Roegadyn, but just not sure because my Highlander is such a stud.
