DigitalFoundry: Hands-on with PS4 1080p 30fps...!!

What? Fuck that shit. Playing fps's on a controller is already sub-par, but if you add input lag on top of that... Forget about it. There's nothing good about input lag, it's just shite.

There is *always* input lag... and it doesn't really matter when all players have a certain degree of input lag in multiplayer. I am pretty sure it's not worse than KZ3, which was acceptable.

"When it comes to the state of software development on PS4, the situation as it stands is surprising. On the one hand, freely playable first-party titles such as Knack and DriveClub suffer from noticeable frame-rate stutters down from 30fps, while on the other, "hands off" demos for the new Infamous and Assassin's Creed games appear to run without a perceptible hitch. This is in stark contrast to the playable software confirmed to be running direct from Xbox One hardware, such as Forza Motorsport 5 and Killer Instinct, which benefit to no end for targeting the 1080p60 gold standard, and largely succeed in doing so."

PS4 - 1080p, 30 FPS
Wii U - 1080p, 60 FPS

I'm just saying, that's either terrible coding, terrible design choices, or both. Turn down the graphics from a 10 to an 8 and double that framerate!

This is the forum poster equivalent of "tighten those graphics".

I came away from E3 with similar feelings on PS4: lots of potential, but the games simply aren't up there yet.

Dude, what are you going on about? PS4, just like the Xbone, Wii U, PS3 and X360 could do 1080p 120FPS if they wanted, it's just that there need to be sacrifices between framerate and graphics quality.

I think that's why he's asking them to turn the graphic down a little bit, and double the framerate. 30fps is ridiculous on that hardware.

More like

PS4 - 1080p30 and 1080p60
Wii U - 720p30 and 720p60

Didn't they mention that Killzone is only using something like 3 gigs of ram? I think the difference between 30 and 60 fps this gen is simply going to be laziness.
The PS Meeting Killone: Shadow Fall demo used 4.5 GB of memory.

More memory does not mean higher frame rates.

Difference between 30 and 60 fps has always and will always be a choice by the developer.

what movies is that from?

I personally love that MS is really pushing 60fps next-gen, especially with the Halo news. But is it definitely confirmed that Forza was running on Xbox One hardware after all?

Would you mind giving your bried impressions of some of the games (KZ, Infamous, WD, etc)? Some impressions from gaffers would be great. I am sure we had an impression thread for previous E3s?

I guess that from a Developer or Publishers perspective though pushing 60fps sadly just isn't worth it...

Youtube videos, TV adverts and screenshots can't convey 60fps, so a game running at 1080p at 30fps with all the eye-candy dialed up will look better almost everywhere.

What does this mean guys? Is it the game or the hardware (combination of both) that are showing signs of unoptimization? Shit really wanted to hear good news about Killzone..

People care more about visuals than framerate.

I don't mind a rock solid hard locked 30 frames per second in a game running on 1080p such as beautiful as Killzone 4, however dat input lag must be gone by the time it ships otherwise is a no buy from me.

We´re probably more than a year off from seeing what the new consoles can really do.

what? of course there is lag but they are complaining about a more-than-usual noticable input-lag which you will also feel in the campaign. but of course it is acceptable for you.

Who would've thought a Killzone game plays like Killzone.
Only the people who believe KZ started with KZ2. There did exist the 1st game on PS2 without those issues but oh no - KZ2 is how KZ is "meant" to be played. Right. KZ2 could not have been a further departure from the 1st in terms of gameplay. But, whatevs, apparently everyone else became a fan starting with 2 completely oblivious that it actually wasn't a killzone game.

It means PS4 lacks special sauce.

No shit? I thought this was the generation where they immediately peak while they develop along side a moving target.

Except graphics are not really a 10 for now in those games. I'll repeat my drive club post.

Will be interesting to see the performance of multi games on PS4. I don't want to look worried but at some point, we hear about a really easy use console for devs, with insane power and lots of really fast ram. Yet we see Drive Club, Infamous that is, if really cool toplay, not exactly impressive technically and with massive pop ins, Knack.. And those are first parties with first seats on the console features. I hope there isn't some kind of hidden weakness there, and this is just a typical "first console games are always a total optimization mess", but that would nullified the "so easy to develop for" legend.

I'd say the PS4 is at least not the magical box that is so easy to handle for now.
i'd also say there are terribly wrong focus for teams and i was totally worried about that long time ago, knowing Sony's relation with its first parties. This must be a Japanese thing to do things like you feel it without really trying to be efficient, but it has a cost. Drive Club and Knack suffer (beyond eventual console performance initial problem) from putting their resources in things that are not noticeable at first sight, or in stores. The 5000 piece character in Knack, the inside of the car models for Drive Club...

This is really a case of wasted energy that will result in negating the PS4 technical superiority (hoping it's actually there) a launch. Watch kids and mainstreams finding Ryse way more next gen than anything PS4 has to offer at launch... History repeating itself.
Sony is really lucky Microsoft shoot themselves in the foot this time cause their software offering is weak and certainly not a good PS4 seller.

I know they're capable of doing 1080p 60 fps (or even 1080p 120 fps as you've exampled), which is why I'd like them to actually do it. I know it's not as simple as turning down the graphic dial from a 10 to an 8 and then the FPS magically doubles, but I'd prefer they focus on a solid 60 fps at the expense of whatever shaders/lighting/textures/geometry/etc etc to get that 60 fps locked.

This is the forum poster equivalent of "tighten those graphics".

I can even see the damn pixels, that's how you know it's a shop.

EDIT: Before this gets out of hand, my original post was basically meant as "Damn, I was hoping for 60 FPS for PS4 games out of the gate."

Not to get offtopic but I didn't know MS was forcing 1080 60fps do you have a link for that? I've never played killzone but I heard input lag was bad. When you say its bad what game are you comparing it to on Xbox or PS3 that you consider good?

One Wii U game runs at 1080p60 and now suddenly all Wii U games do? lol ok

LMFAO I Saw The Devil, well played.

We already knew Killzone was going to be a graphical show case and run at 30fps, it was never intended to run at 60. If the aiming feels more akin to KZ2 then that's a good thing to me, and probably a lot of other people who enjoyed the weighty feel. If they can recapture the weight and their multiplayer from KZ2 I will be ecstatic.

I don't think you understand how this works... 👴

Disappointed that a flagship game like Killzone can't keep a solid 30fps.

With so many 60fps titles at E3 this year, it's a bit surprising to see Sony's shooting for 30. Hopefully they are a solid 30 at least. I wonder how it's going to look next to BF4 which is supposed to be 1080p60.

Also no bothered by the KZ latency report, I thought KZ2 was fine.

Graphics don't work this way. You need to consider the scope of each game, geometry complexity, effects used, etc.

I'm sure you're joking but hopefully no one thinks there's a valid comparison between KZ and Smash Brothers
