Wii U Games 2013

So, they actually trademarked that? Such a missed opportunity. They could've just done something like Steam and I would be quite happy.
Ugh.

I'll never understand I guess. It's such a non issue for me, even though I'm an incredibly even irrationally competitive person. To each his own I guess. Just makes me smh when it becomes part of people's purchasing decisions. Oh well.

Personally, it doesn't affect my purchases much anymore but as stated, I know a lot of people where it does. Every other major platform has an achievement system so why shouldn't the Wii-U? It's just another example of Nintendo being behind the times.

Well, Nintendo doesn't like to force that kind of stuff upon third parties. it just doesn't like to tell them how to develop their own games. It's also why it isn't forcing Off-TV play for all third party Wii U games. When it comes to Nintendo hardware, Nintendo designs it based on its own goals it wants to focus on, so if Nintendo isn't interested in personally making all games with achievements, then there won't be a universal achievement system made available period. We also have to remember that Nintendo doesn't have a desire to be like Microsoft and Sony. For better or for worse, Nintendo enjoys doing things its own way, and I think more people need to acknowledge that already, cause Nintendo has been very consistent in how it operates as a console manufacturer.

And Wonderful 101 just looks flat out awesome.

This is a game that looks interesting but I'm just not 'feeling' it like I want to. It seems to just be a button masher with 2-3 moves (gun, sword, hand) that you repeat again and again and again.

They need to show us some subtlety or strategy in the game before I'll even think about biting.

Like many fast-paced action games, it's probably going to be something that you can button mash your way through if you want to, but only at lower difficulties and/or with lower scores/rankings.

If it seems like the gameplay footage you've seen involves people button mashing, then it's likely because they are.

Ugh. I have some friends that feel that way about achievements/trophies, and I personally find it absolutely asinine. Pretty good scheme the platform holders have going, to addict people to the games.

Funny, I thought fun and engaging game play used to be the hook. Not epeens.

No offense intended of course. Just don't understand it personally as that stuff doesn't do much for me.
I prefer games on Wii U because there are no achievements. I get hooked on them and it hampers my enjoyment of the game. Got Arkham City and AC3 on Wii U because of that and will get all future 3rd party games as well.

I'm just happy games are coming for the Wii U. I know a lot of people are hating on Wii U but I think it has the best lineup this year. Starting in August, I will buy a game every month till the end of the year.

I used the achievement/trophy system as a way of seeing what kinds of easter eggs and challenges were available in the game.

Nintendo games have so many easter eggs and secret things that I think an achievement system would make perfect sense just so I could have a way of seeing my progress.

I'd like to know how many coins I failed to get in the level, or how many secret areas I didn't get.

Crash Bandicoot had a little counter that told me how many crates I got at the end of the level. If I got them all I won a crystal.

Well, Nintendo doesn't like to force that kind of stuff upon third parties.
It's not really forcing 3rd parties, when they are implementing a rewards system in games that more than likely already have them built in.

The fact that WiiU lacks an achievement/trophy system just goes to further emphasize the fact that they are disconnected for the average gamer in this day and age.

Tell him to get the Wii U version because it can help out Nintendo in the end, and convince Ubisoft to keep supporting the Wii U in the future.

So...Nintendo has basically become a charity case for some people?
I think it's a pretty sad state of affairs when we are encouraging people to buy games on a certain platform in order to prevent 3rd party abandonment.

Managed to get the Wii U to pick up my WiFi. People weren't joking about the speed (or lack thereof) of the system update. This thing is draaaaagging.

The first night I couldn't get it to recognize my network, so I used a program on my laptop called "Connectify" to make my laptop broadcast it's own wifi network that worked just fine on the Wii U.

It kind of bugged me so I tried connecting to my real wifi network the next day and it recognized it no problem. So, for any other new or potentially new Wii U owners who are just TOTALLY fucked as to what to do about 'net access, I suggest the free version of "Connectify". Worked a treat.

Just to add onto this. New owners should definitely set it up, start to download the update, then take a nap, run errands, sleep, clean, etc.

Oh GOD yes. My Wii U came in on my first night of an 8 day stretch at work and between that and my kids being home for the summer so I have them more often I've barely been able to mess with it except for TANK! TANK! TANK! and other local MP marathons with them.

That first night I had no kids around and I was totally hyped to fuck around with it but, except for maybe 20 minutes with Mario, I spent all night 'till like 3am setting the bastard up and updating :(

Gonna play the hell out of NSMBU and SMG for the first time while I'm on vacation this week! Also got Ass. Creed 3 coming but it won't be here 'till middle of July.

Gonna be nice to finally get some game time in! Just don't plan to get any maxin' and relaxin' in that first night, guys!

Does anyone know if A.N.N.E. is actually coming? It seems to have not reached it's Wii U goal but it looks very fun and I want it on my U!

The dev said A.N.N.E. was coming to Wii U no matter what (the stretch goal would've mean it would come "sooner" though, so now we have to wait a little longer). So yea, look forward to it :)

He's buying Splinter Cell on PS3 instead of Wii U strictly for the trophies. "I really want the Wii U version for the game pad features and so we can play co-op, but I have to do PS3 instead for the trophies.". Direct quote. What are we coming to as gamers?

Your friend needs some serious help. That is completely irrational. I used to be really into getting trophies as well. And then I realized none of it means anything and often ruins my enjoyment of the game grinding for platinums.

T

I'm not 100% sure, this is the info we have about Nintendo achievements.

And they do have it. NSMBU has one, Nintendoland has one. You can even compare yours against others in the latter. It just doesn't work like it does on other systems. People want Nintendo to copy someone else's idea and that's not really what they're into.

Off TV play is my favorite feature (I have a reality-showing loving wife and 2 little kids) but with the Vita being able to play ALL PS4 games, it's not the showpiece feature it was one year ago.

I disagree. The difference is that while it works natively for all games, I doubt all those games will play well on a vita considering they lack the second set of triggers as well as clickable sticks and sometimes you just can't make up for that with the touchscreen or back-touch stuff. Sony is "encouraging" developers to make custom control schemes for remote play but I highly doubt that all of them will do it.

....or hit cancel and it will download in the background!

Also, can you control the PS4 entirely via the Vita or just the games? The Wii U interface can be controlled entirely without turning on the TV.

[1] Or to go even farther down this glorious rabbithole: start the download, then turn the system off and let it download (and I think even install?) in standby!

[2] Not sure how it worked with the PSP but I would assume you could just d-pad your way around everything since it's natively built-in.

I don't think 1 would work if it's the initial update...or do they come with that firmware already?

this is the wrong thread! You should ask about eshop..HERE!!!

LOL self promoting!

Cool

Maybe both topics could link to one and other in the OP.

I like the idea of having animated gifs in the template... or did i mention that already?

Hey Captain Smoker... if you ever get bored, you could make your game badges in the first post animated gifs :)

Leave top and bottom bars static (as part of the animated gif), but instead of the static game picture in the middle, it would be awsome if that part was animated. I think... or it least it looks awesome in my imagination :=)

I've asked Smoker already to put animated gifs into his template instead of static images but his lazy ass won't budge!

I'm kidding, very grateful for your work and this awesome thread!

I could care less about Achievements, but I think Nintendo is just being stubborn to not build it into their OS. They could call them Medals or even Gold/Silver/Bronze Stickers. Add a subsection to everyone's Miiverse profile so others can browse them. Simple.

Wow, looking at that line-up of games coming out, there's a lot to look foward to, as a Nintendo fan. Sadly, I see no major reason for anyone else to pick up the console. Hopefully sales pick up enough to increase the user base to a point where third parties jump back in, but as it stands, Wii U could be Nintendo's least supported console yet.

I'm curious to see what Nintendo does if Wii U continues to do poorly through the 2013 holiday season. I don't think they've ever been in a situation like this with a console before.

Thing is, the framework is already in place. Developers could easily build cheevos into their game and tie them to miiverse posts. Beat that boss in only two minutes without health? Trigger a miiverse message popup that includes a screenshot even. Miiverse supports tags which is how you can filter in many communities already. They just need a general "achievement" subsection on your profile that collects all of these sorted by game. The foundation is already there.

How badass would it be if Nintendo's achievements used different Mario power-ups to denote value?

You got a 1-up Accomplishment for killing Bowser!
You got a Super Mushroom Accomplishment for collecting 50% of all the KONG letters!
You got a Poison Mushroom Accomplishment for dying on the first Goomba!

Maybe not ideal, but what I'm getting at is that Nintendo could surely come up with a clever system should they want to.

Your Shape Fitness Evolved is the only third party game I'm aware of that uses Miiverse tags in such a fashion.

Just ordered Assassin's Creed 3 off of Amazon since I saw it was only $20 brand new and I'd always been interested in the colonial setting.

Anyone care to share their experiences? I haven't seriously attempted an Ass Creed game since 1 but Red Dead Redemption was one of my games of the generation due to all the hunting in those gorgeous forests so I'm hoping for a similar experience here.

It was my first AC ever. I tried it because of the setting as well and I really liked. Can't go wrong for $20.

Now I got to decide on purchasing the DLC or not.

I still have to try this out. ^^

lol

I'm just jankin' your chain. Like someone in the other thread said, files might get heavy. On the other hand, maybe only a select few games deserve the special treatment? Or maybe just the exclusives, or first party games? On the other hand, there are plenty of threads people slap you silly with animated gifs, so is it really such a big deal to load a couple of MB's anno 2013?

I actually used 16:9 originally:

I am a bit ashamed to admit this but the lack of an achievement/trophy system really hampers my excitement for the Wii U (and 3DS).

I have the same problem:/ Only in regards to multiplatform games, though; it sure as hell won't stop me from buying and enjoying their first-party titles.

Wrong! There should be enough for every "gamer". If you don't agree, please list the games you think ONLY appeal to "Nintendo fan(s)" (<--- don't even know what that means - people who ONLY play Nintendo's 1st Party? lol, who are those people?).

There's plenty of 3rd Party, plenty of great Indi-Games (The 90s Arcade Racer FTW) and obviously great 1st Party titles - plus huge 3rd Party Exclusives like Sonc Lost Word, W101 and Bayonetta 2.

A Nintendo fan is someone who likes Nintendo games. That doesn't mean he doesn't like other games. Furthermore, i think he meant "as opposed to people who don't like Nintendo games"... because they most likely already own a PS360 and can get most of those 3rd party games there. Which doesn't mean they can't enjoy them ofcourse, but it won't be on WiiU. And without the Nintendo (-ish) games, the line-up would look quite a bit less impressive.

The only thing I don't like about that is that Mario stuff would be showing up while I'm playing Wonderful 101 or Resident Evil. I don't think it would mesh well together.

I always thought they should do medals. Some of their games already have a history of it.

Understood. But I'm not so sure if there should be a term called "Nintendo-ish", simply because before the time (beginning of last gen) everything turned into Unchared/CoD/God of War clones, there was actually a time where all the big consoles would get a lot of 2D/3D Platformers, Action Games, Action Adventures, JRGs, SRPGs, Fun Racers, SHMUPS and many mixes of those.

I'm don't think they are particularily "Nintendo-ish". I mean, it would be said if we needed to call everything ouside of FPS and 3rd Person Cinematic Experiences "Nintendo-ish".

Pretty much spot on what I meant, yeah. I'm a Nintendo fan myself, and of course I'm really happy with what's coming out, and I also know the value of the few other offerings the system will have in the future. However, I can also see the situation from the viewpoint of someone who doesn't necessarily like Nintendo's first party games. Those franchises mean a lot to us, for sure, but the truth is if they haven't sold these other people on Nintendo hardware in the past, there's nothing to indicate that these latest releases will change their minds now. Games like Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, and X do offer something beyond the typical Nintendo style of game, but judging from the outcry the former caused upon its announcement, they won't be enough to change many minds.

You can say the same about the PS4/X1 line up too since most of those games will be on PS360. People tend to buy consoles for exclusives though.

I have to say, I am interested in the game, but It's really simple: If that port doesn't have pointer controls, then I'm not gonna get it.
I hear ya. I love pointer controls. But I'll let it slide in a game that isn't a competitive twitch shooter.
