I love how all the witnesses so far have contradicted Zimmerman's account! Keep bringing them in and let's put him in jail where he belongs!

She was a good witness for the prosecution, I wonder if the use of a translator made it more difficult for the defense to go after her more.

the only witness & statements the jury will remember are the ones given by Rachel lol she did more for Zimmerman than anyone they'll put on the stand

Uh huh, I'm sure the jury will just disregard everything other people witnessed because Jeantel came across as a moron...

Eh, I'm talking about a sleazy lawyer acting sleazy. Hate to say this but people don't really like lawyers. Having sat on a jury a few times, the way a lawyer acts in court really does affect the jury, for better or worse.

If you really think he did that to be a creeper, or that it seriously came off that way anywhere other than a videogame forum filled with horny 20-something dudes, most of whom were joking around, I think you're a bit delusional.

Regarding the witnesses, I believe Zimmerman made the statement to police that after shooting Martin he ended up pushing him off of him and getting on top to restrain him. Did the witnesses see the change of positions or did the person on top remain there during the altercation?

This one didn't testify she saw a position switch. I couldn't watch the first two days of trial.

So what happens if the prosecution has witnesses that say that Zimmerman was on top?

Do they get to retell their story without Zimmerman declaring? Still get to claim Zimmerman acted in self defense?

I didn't watch the video. I said IF he came off the way people in here are saying he came off, it would look pretty bad.

The defense will be able to come up with excuses unless someone saw Zimmerman on top before/as the gun was fired.

The important bit will be if they testify that he was on top before or as he shot Martin, as his original written statement to police says he pushed Martin off and straddled him after firing. If people place him on top during the altercation that would undermine his entire basis for claiming self defense.

Curious to see what the other members of law-gaf/lawyer-gaf think, but based on what I've seen and read so far, it's looking good for Zimmerman. Also, he should not be put on the stand at all, come hell or highwater.

I don't know how you can say that when every witness contradicts his version with only one of them looking bad depending on how you that person came off to you.

EDIT:wow i totally misread you and thought you said he would not have to take the stand, my bad.

There are 911 calls that support Zimmerman's case, with statements like "The guy on top was wearing white", which would be Martin (who was wearing white). Don't be surprised if those are the ones the defense show.

Good trial attorneys bill by the hour, not a flat rate. Please stop talking about things you know nothing about.

i know they charge by the hour but the total cost at the end of trial was $50,000 lol at least for him, a friend of mine had to hire one so i know the cost in his case

Yeah but i thought he was saying he wouldnt have to testify and my comment was based on that. i kinda feel like that if all these people are saying it went down one way, he kinda has to put himself out there no?

How is it looking good?

The prosecution has to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt."
Not only is eyewitness testimony in general unreliable, they don't all match up to each other, plus the star witness has been impeached to shreds. Basically, all we can glean from the combination of the witness testimonies is: there was a fight. We are unclear on who started it, why it started, who assaulted/battered who first, etc.

If he gets put on the stand, the prosecution could cross-examine him to death. The defense shouldn't let him take the stand.

Interesting.

Impeached to shreds? Doesn't impeached mean, accused of unlawful activity? Or is there another meaning I am not aware of? English isn't my first language so I don't know all the intricacies.

This trial is not so bad.

In this context it just means her credibility was undermined, which it was, but people who don't know much about how these things go are making far too big a deal out of it. The prosecution knew she would be asked about it, which is why they asked about it on direct.

In the context of a witness, it basically means killing their credibility as a witness.

EDIT: Beaten. Duuuuude!

Why not? Is it because he will prove himself guilty? Doesn't seem the defense is going so well then.

Was at work walking to the break room when I saw a caption on the TV "Thats real retarded sir" and I almost spit out my coffee

This trial is so exhausting to behold because, at the end of the day, a 17 year old teenager is dead.

Maybe it's because today, my cousin would have turned 36 years old (his twin sister is having a rough time today), had he not been gunned down when he was 23, so a situation like this really gets to me, and I admit to being emotionally invested in this trial in a lot of different ways. My family was fortunate in that we got "justice" for the person that killed my cousin (and 5 other innocent people that night), but it doesn't hurt any less.

All I want is justice for the Martins. Zimmerman killed their son. There's no disputing that. And then to see how, since the beginning, Trayvon's character has been attacked and pulled through the mud. It's got to smart.

The first thing one of the higher ups at my job asked me when I told them I had to return to Milwaukee because my cousin was killed, was, "Be honest, was he in a gang?" I was so angry that I couldn't even respond, so I can't imagine how the Martin's must feel seeing what the media has turned their son's death into.

Shitty or good witnesses, racism or racial profiling, a 17 year old boy is dead. I don't know what the outcome of this trial will be, but hopefully it will bring some kind of closure for the Martins. Whether in jail or a free man, the Zimmerman's son is still drawing breath. They can still talk to him and hear his voice and his laugh. The Martin's can't.

And that fucking sucks.
