Speculation: Could Cerny Lead Sony's Secret JRPG Project (1st Party Answer to FF)?

Bye @ your flop opinion. JRPGs still run dis

IT IS HORRIBLE and I am so tired of seeing everyone reminisce about it recently! Goddamn, it's so bad! 1/5!!!! ONE OUT OF FIVE AHH

Legend of Dragoon is one of the most generic JRPGs ever made.

But it has some charming music and pre-rendered backgrounds. Really relaxed simple gameplay too. Don't think I had to grind a single time in that entire thing.

I doubt the veracity of this whole "secret PS4 JRPG". It smacks too much of wishful thinking, and even if it were true Sony doesn't have the talent to make a good JRPG. If SCEJ is responsible for it, it'll either be crap or take forever to come out.

Right, they only have the talent to make interesting universes, mechanics, and to use smarter storytelling than cutscene, cutscene, dialogue, cutscene. Not like that's the main composition of a JRPG or anything.

I have a feeling that Cerny is better suited to the technical/hardware side of things rather than game design. I base this on how terrible Knack looks.

Is this a crazy idea or possible?

Cerny will more likely be the lead consultant for some first party games (including The Last Guardian) up until early 2015 and then shift toward the chief architect role for the PS5 that same year.

- 'Unannounced JRPG 2' will be SCE's second attempt at a big game emulating FF. If this comes to fruition, and is successful, then there is a franchise opportunity which can be exploited. Probably the most experimental project as if it bombs, then they'll never touch anything like it again. I don't think it will though. With the advent of FF15, KH3, and the announcement of FF16 sometime between 2014-2015, Japan gamers will be ready for this. The big question mark is whether they can translate some of that success to the West which will obviously be an aim.

Sounds good, been too long since a big budget FF like jrpg came out on consoles. Hope they emulate Tetsuya Nomura's style too lol, his designs are so cool.

And btw, wasn't JRPG Cerny's favourite genre? Atleast thats what I read once.

He worked on Sonic 2, Crash Bandicoot 1-3 and Jak & Daxter 1. He was also a design consultant on the PS1 Spyro games, Uncharted 1, God of War 3 and a bunch of Ratchet & Clank games.

I have faith in Cerny.

I have no faith in SCEJ besides PD though, as they are worthless and take forever to get exactly nothing of value out the door.

I doubt anyone will have an answer to Final Fantasy XV. You just can't compete. But if they release it quick enough it could be an answer to FF13

At this point even a Level-5 JRPG nowadays is an answer to Tragic Struggles XIII

Man was Integral to the creation of the PS4 and Sonic 2. After Knack is finished I say Sony should let the man make whatever he pleases. I'll pay attention to any pies he has his hands in. So if the man wants to make a JRPG, for the love of god make it so Sony.

He helped create Sonic 2? OMG I love this guy even more now

Sony needs to contract Yasumi Matsuno and get that Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics flavour storytelling.

It will be nice if sony make more new JRPG IP and Reviving their classic franchise like Wild Arms, legaia, Arc the lad, dark cloud, etc. even if it led by a western dev (but still consist of mostly japanese team) i hope they keep the style of art Japanese, i don't want to play jrpg with a knack like artstyle.

I want WILD ARMS 6!!!!!!!!!!

Unless it's called Final Fantasy, JRPGs don't sell in great enough numbers for Sony to both set up a studio and invest time and money in making it.

The genre isn't dead, but it's definitely not one of the "key genres" it was for most people but unless it gets a lot of hype for some unique aspect (being called Final Fantasy, being a collaboration with Studio Ghibli etc) fhere's no incentive, since the PS consoles are one of the de facto choices for anyone making the more neich titles anyway.

They'd be better off fully funding a Final Fantasy VII remake. Simple as that.

What Sony could really use is a strong WRPG.

After ME3, I wish another dev team could pick up on the space sci-fi RPG genre and given the polish that is generally associated with Sony's first parties' offerings, one of them would make a good candidate.

In general the realm sci-fi WRPG is sparsely populated in the current gen (Fallout, Mass Effect, Deus Ex) and so I'm hoping things would change next gen.

Maybe this is what the From Software guys are doing. I imagine Cerny doesn't have time for another project between Knack and the PS4's upcoming launch.

If Sony are making an RPG I hope he isn't directing.

He seems to have done a good job with the Playstation 4 hardware, but when it comes to directing/designing... I'm not so sure. Nothing he's done has been particularly great, and Knack looks to be continuing that trend.

It's pretty clear some of those games, PSASBR and SCTiT for example, would look much better if it wasnt for the Vita holding them back.

ch..... you think PSABR was held back because of vita? have you seen the UI? It was not enough money or passion poured into that mess. The vita is the last thing that held it back

Cerny was on ICE team. So he has experience leading super ninja teams that will bring us unique experiences. Unlimited Fantasy.

Isnt this what guerilla's other game is supposed to be?

He was an adviser for Crash, Uncharted and Spyro. At least that counts for something and oh Marble madness.

Just design the game(s) with an international market in mind. No need for girly men or story elements that are too japan only for western markets. Just take the aesthetics back to the 90's where everything had a slight japanese flavor but somehow didn't alienate at the same time.

How are those Pokemon console RPGs going?

What does it matter if it's on a handheld or a console? Pokemon puts up insane numbers in every territory, and it's a JRPG.

It's a dumb argument to begin with, since expecting every JRPG to put up Pokemon or Final Fantasy numbers worldwide is foolish.

I played it for the first time 2 years ago and loved it.

Anyway, is Verendus a credible source? Is he a confirmed insider? I would love if he was right, of course. JRPGs need a presence on consoles again, and what better way to do that than a console maker doing a AAA one.

I remember the last time I got my hopes up when Sony was creating a new IP, what I ended up with was Playstation All Stars Battle Royal. I will be cautiously optimistic about this.
