Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

There are people defending this on Miiverse. There are people who are saying it's selfish to want to stream the matches.

thats just a very few people out of the bunch that are complaining. I just made a post and it got 21 Yeahs instantly. people aren't happy.

They should just stream the crowd for Melee instead. Capture the hype. And I'm sure there'll be plenty of hype. I mean, the Smash community is still going to be there.

Maybe that'll show Nintendo how big a deal this is.

Nintendo, c'mon son.

The Wii U is floundering. This would be a prime opportunity to drop a New Smash reveal or something to promote yourself and the console. There should've been a playable build with Megaman right there with all the Capcom supporters there.

Other companies wrote checks to get their game in their. Fans of Smash threw $95K at Breast Cancer Research for this chance. Why are they doing this?

Well was never planning to ever buy a Wii U, but at least I have a reason now!

In all seriousness though, I'm saddened to hear about the news. I loathe the FGC and e-sports, but I have never gotten to witness Smash being played at a high level before. Too bad.

Back to playing Injustice.

How fucking ridiculous. Not only did they decide to wait to the very last second to do something about this, but it fucked over both the SSBM and Skullgirls communities after they donated $175K to breast cancer research. Like, what?

Interesting, I wonder what the case is now. Probably the same, if not worse.

Did it just not clear in time, or did Nintendo overreact, or what? Ball is in the Cannons' court to explain if this is a thing/they knew about it.

Ponder on Smashboards

It's with a very heavy heart that I must report some bad news. I'm sure you're all aware that Nintendo is tightening it's policies around uses of it's IP by 3rd parties. We have just been informed by their legal department that we do not have permission to stream SSBM. We will, of course, honor both the letter and the intent of their request. All broadcasts of SSBM, both official and unofficial, will be forbidden at Evo 2013. Though I understand everyone is disappointed, please do not setup bootleg SSBM streams on your phones. Doing so would put the entire tournament in jeopardy. Anyone at Evo who broadcasts SSBM will be immediately disqualified from the tournament, their passes will be revoked, and you will be asked to leave the premises. You are, of course, free to take whatever pictures or videos you like for your own personal enjoyment at the event.

Since it cannot be broadcast, we will be moving the SSBM finals to Saturday immediately following the Semi Finals (est: 2:00 PM).

You guys worked very hard to get to Evo, and you should be proud of what you've done for your community and the millions of victims of Breast Cancer around the world. Even though there will be no stream, we think Smash is going to be one of the highlights of Evo this year, and we're proud to have you guys be a part of it!

This is probably it, sadly. It's a silly and bizarre decision, but I bet they are terrified of kids streaming it and their parents overhearing the type of language typical for FGC matches being played over the top of a Nintendo game.
You've obviously never watch an EVO stream. It's extremely sanitized, and when MK streamed there was a content warning beforehand. This isn't some rowdy backalley production.

People definitely want another Smash. I don't think they want another Brawl as much, however. There's a lot more uncertainty about the quality of the series right now and they're going to release it on a platform that will have a significant disadvantage compared to where they were with the Wii. I think this is also part of their move to push the game onto the stronger 3DS platform; the confidence level isn't the same right now. The last thing they should be doing is putting strain on the same dedicated fanbase that generates so much talk for their series and helps push their initial week numbers.

Great - I'd love to see you and your merry men walking on this franchise.

I don't think it's possible for you to do it.

Do you know the reason why it has a spot at Evo or are you just trolling?
Alot of people play it? Just cause something is popular does mean its good. Miley Cyrrus sells tons of records, and that shit is ass! It just means that there a ot of people with bad taste. That s all.

You are right. Can't sell that much and still be called a fighter lol

In all seriousness though, it's still at the biggest fighting game tournament, so the community collectively disagrees with you.
Its ok if people disagree with me. Read what I said above. There are a lot of people with bad taste.

Maybe we could vent our frustrations in a more positive way again. What if we started another donation drive, not necessarily for breast cancer research but maybe another goal in light of this to again highlight the positive angles of the competitive community?

I can't believe how seriously this is affecting my continued attempts at calling myself a fan of Nintendo. Someone has to find a way to divorce the IP and talent of Nintendo from these truly stupid and antiquated policies that help no one and hurt everyone that just wants to have fun with Nintendo output man. It's like, I still can't come to grips with this shit.

Hearing the comments supporting this bullshit from the world of Miiverse too is just head shakingly fucked up.

Really...bad news about video game happenings only exist on Kotaku?

come on now...

The Noel story? I don't recall any mainstream news organisations picking it up. Hell, I don't think any notable gaming site outside of Kotaku picked it up. I don't think anything similar happening at Evo will be any different.

Yo, shut the fuck up before someone with red text does it for you, Rico.

I don't play smash but I play just about every fg, and I didn't notice anything significant happening there.

After eliminating one member of a team entirely, they grapple juggled the remaining combatant and then proceeded to juggle him out of the arena for a KO.

High level play of SSB is a entirely different beast then casual SSB.

You dont stick around with a thriving community for 12 years with no official support on shit.

Guys, post screencaps and links to miiverse posts positive or negative pls.
Don't act like it's just the Nintendo fans.

You saw what happened here back when Microsoft was being super stupid about Xbox One.

People will defend companies against their own interests for some reason, and I don't get it.
This doesn't have anything to do with Microsoft. This is a Nintendo thread. There was a time and place to discuss Microsoft's astroturfing and the corporate dicksucking that was going on a few weeks ago.

Right now this is about Nintendo.

I would compare it to publishers using DRM on PC; fighting the internet (even when their actions are illegal) is a losing battle every single time. You can keep kicking and flailing and hope you manage to beat it back, but based on past precedent, it's a fool's errand.

The lesson is that the only way for the internet to not be your company's enemy is if you embrace it. Yes, people are going to do all sorts of ostensibly bad things like piracy and streaming and people making porn out of your games. You cannot stop this, and trying to crack down on it only makes you look bad, so the only reasonable approach is to try and figure out how to harness these social forces for your own good.

I mean, of course I understand why a company would wish it would all just go away, because it makes it far easier for them to control their brand and image broadly if the internet and all its myriad social functions simply didn't exist. But fighting the internet is like boxing shadows, and the longer Nintendo takes to figure that out the worse it will be for them.

What I take away from this is that Nintendo's network related struggles go much deeper than simply having friend codes.

It's this sort of thing which is, to me, more telling -- it suggests they do not understand networking more broadly. This is a social event. It is a way for a community of people who ostensibly enjoy their game to come together. They seem to view the development of communal, online gaming as some sort of alien force to be exterminated, and I think this serves them a profound disservice.

Dude I'm pissed at them too, but aren't the mods usually very against Nintendo related conspiracy theories?

You guys are funny. Smash is not a fighting game, its some kinda platform toss people over the side battle system pokeman children's type game. Evo is for fighting games people.... fighting games.

Smash has been at Evo before. Melee was selected by Evo fans to get played there.

but what if pirates managed to steal the sourcecode of melee from those EVO streams and make their own competing party fighting game

Free marketing for a game that came out 12 years ago?

well they could've turned it into a great marketing event for their next Smash game coming out next year. i know it was getting a lot of people excited for it last night in Cosmo's pre-evo smash stream. lots of people chatting about it.

I'm not defending the decision. I'm just trying to think like an idiot lawyer that works for Nintendo.

It's been stated before but even Nintendo banned streaming Smash Bros from official leagues like Major League Gaming. And they've been going after Let's Play videos on Youtube.
