Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

Anti conspiracy theory?! What's the point then.

I'm thinkings it's to protect their casual image with the game, which is a bad decision.

Not defending their policies regarding streaming, but did EVO/competitive smash fans put the thing through NOA? And when did they do it?

People definitely want another Smash. I don't think they want another Brawl as much, however. There's a lot more uncertainty about the quality of the series right now and they're going to release it on a platform that will have a significant disadvantage compared to where they were with the Wii. I think this is also part of their move to push the game onto the stronger 3DS platform; the confidence level isn't the same right now. The last thing they should be doing is putting strain on the same dedicated fanbase that generates so much talk for their series and helps push their initial week numbers.

I want a new Brawl...excluding tripping and character balance it's easily my favorite

In truth, it's Sakuraï behind this, enjoying the spectacle while patting his cat.
How do you think a person staying that young is not some demoniac entity...

Then be smart about it and demo exclusive debut of SSB4 footage or announce a character at the venue. EVO, Smash commmunity and Nintendo all win. But no. Nintendo just doesn' t have a full grasp of how to use and mobilize the communities for their own software.

They don't understand basic marketing. With this whole event all they heard was "someone is going to stream our IP and $$ is involved go sick the dogs on'em!"

I can't believe how seriously this is affecting my continued attempts at calling myself a fan of Nintendo. Someone has to find a way to divorce the IP and talent of Nintendo from these truly stupid and antiquated policies that help no one and hurt everyone that just wants to have fun with Nintendo output man. It's like, I still can't come to grips with this shit.

I love Nintendo. Nintendo is video games in a way that no company will ever be able to match.

However, it has become increasingly clear that over the last two or three years, Nintendo of America specifically has become apathetic and occasionally aggressively hostile towards the Nintendo fan base, which I define as non-casual or core gamers who care about Nintendo franchises.

Alot of people play it? Just cause something is popular does mean its good. Miley Cyrrus sells tons of records, and that shit is ass! It just means that there a ot of people with bad taste. That s all.

Its ok if people disagree with me. Read what I said above. There are a lot of people with bad taste.

So you really do not have anything better to do than come into a thread, start thread shitting about a topic that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand and just keep digging away?

*shrug* So be it.

I'm serious though. Can't we come together as a community and raise donations for Alzheimer's research.

It could prevent senile decisions like this being made in the future.

I guess this is just a combination of Nintendo's usual procedure (no commercial streams allowed) coupled with them considering the fighting game community irrelevant. It still shows a pretty big disconnect though, which is especially weird considering their current situation. It's like they haven't noticed that the numbers they're pulling right now are low enough that even hardcore communities could count. I guess they still expect to turn things around this December?

Anyway, if they were in a better position, something like this wouldn't surprise me at all. It's only a bit shocking due to their current state. I like Nintendo's games, but they're absolutely a bad company as far as relationship with consumers go.

It goes along with their begrudging acknowledge that hey maybe people cant or dont want to play with people in the same room. Its funny too cause SSBB was their first real attempt at an online play and it was a rushed pos that instead of giving it the massive legs Melee had probably hurt retention rate and ended up being a black mark on the game rather than a selling point.

The online was bad, but Brawl had big legs. It was still moving (well, shipping) millions years after release.

At the same time they're trying to reap the rewards of using a network for quick financial gain. Nintendo is fine with doing DLC for their games

Only part of them though. Look at the Animal Crossing team.

absolutely ridiculous

there needs to be some twitter/facebook/instagram/everything campaign to get this decision reversed; or Nintendo better set up some 'let us stream stuff' form or something in the next 3 days

And less money would have been donated to Breast Cancer.

who cares though, we got skullgirls, right!?
Congrats on fucking over all those other people though. Apparently they can't complain if it involves donations of any kind. Don't give me this crap. I put money into the drive to even though we didn't win and I was happy to do so.

please

Dude I'm pissed at them too, but aren't the mods usually very against Nintendo related conspiracy theories?

Conspiracy theory? I'm saying Nintendo doesn't have an intelligent approach to online and internet communities broadly (and that this action demonstrates that).

I'm not sure what the conspiracy is, here. I'm willing to listen, but it seems more likely that either you did not understand my point or that I didn't communicate it well.

Maybe we could vent our frustrations in a more positive way again. What if we started another donation drive, not necessarily for breast cancer research but maybe another goal in light of this to again highlight the positive angles of the competitive community?

What if we just fucking ignore Nintendo's games so we don't have to suffer this garbage again?

I don't really understand why Nintendo is doing this...wouldn't you be happy for exposure about your game? Sooooo stupid to me, I just don't get this at all. Considering the times for Tekken and now that I can't see Melee, I guess that kills my interest in Evo.

EDIT: Oh yea and then it reminds me how much they donated to get their game in...yeah good job there Nintendo, they donate to a worthy cause to get their game in and you say no streaming. Good job

You're a Nintendo fan? lol

Again, I hated using the term for a LOOOOONG time here on GAF because the perception of a Nintendo Fan to most here = "Will Suck Iwata for Mario, Please Understand" whereas I just enjoy their games and could give fuck all about the memes and extraneous bullshit in the way of getting/enjoying said games.

The majority of my gaming likes comes from them and I have never shied away from stating this. It has come to a point lately though where I just can't see myself supporting a company so asinine and infuriatingly/insultingly backwards without a wholesale change of pace from ASAP to eternity.

Yeah :\. I love a lot of the games their developers put out, but these types of decisions and policies from them are so irritating. I was so hype to watch Melee this weekend too.

I don't get Nintendo anymore. I lost a lot respect for them because the Smash Fan base is one of their most dedicated Nintendo fans who will most likely be there day 1 for Smash 4 among other titles and this is how they get treated.

Ridiculous. I was really happy for the Smash community. They came together and donated a large amount, and actually showed up to compete for EVO (~700). Shit was real.

Get out of here with that shit.

It's a dick move regardless, and the money was essentially donated under false pretenses. Every person who donated has a right to feel fucked over by Nintendo.

Alot of coverage on twitter and whatnot, some people have it the facebook but sadly as has been said Nintendo has no online liason and no community presence. There are a couple of days to work with but as we have already seen schedules have already been wrecked and caused chaos due to this.

Cause that's not the way Smash is supposed to be played. Ho Ho Ho.

At the end of the day, at least there's a charity out there with 90k extra thanks to Smash fans. Gotta count for something.

I would compare it to publishers using DRM on PC; fighting the internet (even when their actions are illegal) is a losing battle every single time. You can keep kicking and flailing and hope you manage to beat it back, but based on past precedent, it's a fool's errand.

The lesson is that the only way for the internet to be a good tool for your company is to embrace it. People are going to all sorts of ostensibly bad things like piracy and streaming and people making porn out of your games. You cannot stop this, and trying to crack down on it only makes you look bad, so the only reasonable approach is to try and figure out how to harness these social forces for your own good.

I mean, of course I understand why a company would wish it would all just go away, because it makes it far easier for them to control their brand and image broadly if the internet and all its myriad social functions simply didn't exist. But fighting the internet is like boxing shadows, and the longer Nintendo takes to figure that out the worse it will be for them.
Always good to read your posts and once again, spot on. Like you say, fighting the internet will get them nowhere. If only the likes of Arakawa and Lincoln were still at NoA...

Get it trending on Twitter and hopefully they listen. I can't imagine them not.

It will be at least four more years before anyone at Nintendo even understands what Twitter actually is, and another two years before they start using it to actually interact with fans.
The Twitters they have now are just to auto dump information out.

And you're being a dick. The prize for donating the most money was having said game get streamed at Evo, and now Nintendo has removed that. Of course people are going to get pissed off.
