and now he's put it as his favorite film of the year! Must've really enjoyed it

(I think he gave Avengers a C-, so this one's for you, TheKaeptain)

C-? Too high. .

They can't stop those films from making money, they can promote smaller films which they are much better at. Everybody knows this, don't be absurd. But without critics there are no tastemakers calling bullshit on day one, they can define the terms of what has artistic merit and what doesn't, and that matters in maintaining film as an art form.
"They" can be anyone including Neogaf users and not every film has to be some modern art masterpiece to be a good movie. Believe it or not people go the movies to be entertained. Most people are perfectly capable of judging the merits of a film. Also remind me again what exactly your argument is?

This article, courtesy of Variety, seems fairly gloomy:

Predicting a 25-35 million opening. Is it old?

If only the film’s budget could have been kept in check.
I don't think this is true. Del Toro pridefully explained how he managed to do the film for a lot less than the budget he was allotted.

I think this film will do fine. Its been screwed over by a bad opening week, and slow and inadequate promotion campaign. It will do fine, not great, or as great as I could have, but it will do okay.

is there romance in this movie? I keep seeing the guy and the girl.

I hope not.

I asked a coworker if she was going to see Pacific Rim with her husband. It was a hard no, especially when I mentioned robots and monsters. Then I showed her a trailer. Now she's one of us.

i dunno if i will agree with him or not but it's great that iron man 3 is in his top 5 considering it's far and away the best blockbuster of the summer so far.

climbed back to 84% seems to me it'll settle in the mid-low 80s. A lot more than I thought it was going to get at RT (I honestly thought critics were going to ravaged it)

Aw yeah, just found out this film is opening in China on 7/31, I was afraid I was gonna have to go to Hong Kong just to catch this.

what I find ironic is that a shit movie like the lone ranger didn't get a single bad press article from them, yet pacific rim which is getting great critics reception gets all these 'doom and gloom' articles.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but there has to be some hidden agenda there because otherwise I don't get it.

In order to pilot the Jaeger perfectly they need to be linked by each other VERY closely that there are no secrets between them. I don't know if that's going to develop into a romance or something, but that's the premise.

I think you may be onto something. I said it before, but it bears repeating:

I don't understand Variety. They did this great cover story on the film in May, and I guess del Toro must've pissed them off or something because they've been doing everything in their power to make sure this movie gets negative buzz. From bullcrap "tracking" articles to grumpy editorials to a pretentious negative review, it seems like Variety's pulling out all the stops.

Oh, man. I can't handle the wait. I think there may be something wrong with me.

Still trying to get more friends to go see it with me Thursday.

"A terrific modern creature feature, Pacific Rim is bolstered by fantastical imagery and an irresistible sense of fun." Nice description.

hmm, not sure if i should see this thursday or friday. gf has reservations on this film just based on the poster, but it looks pretty awesome to me.

Tell her she must cancel the apocalypse with you. When she asks what you're talking about tell her you already bought tickets and they're non-refundable.

i'll try, but she'll be like 'oh i don't like action films they're stupid' and by all accounts the trailer doesnt seem to do this film any justice. worst comes to worst i'll see it by myself.

there's a spoiler thread you guys.
Eh.
Looks like Legendary moved with Universal.

King Kong vs. Godzilla make it happen.

YES. This is great, now we can get that epic Uni theme with these movies now, right?

i'll try, but she'll be like 'oh i don't like action films they're stupid' i'll try though

Been there, good luck!

Just got back. Yep, some large-scale, dumb fun. The script is dirt poor and Charlie Hunnam is a Garrett Hedlund clone in the worst way possible, but Guillermo Del Toro delivers the thrills and sells the world.

Despite all being set at night, the 3 battles in the film are pretty great and each got my heart pumping (including one greatly executed flashback). Charlie Day is very funny, as is Ron Perlman, and Idris Elba is probably the stand-out. Unfortunately the script has some of the stiffest, boilerplate lines I've seen in a blockbuster. Thanks to Hunnam's extremely forced delivery, I laughed my ass off at his tough guy routine.

But yeah, you pretty much get what you came for. Del Toro keeps the pacing up and it keeps building and building as he expands the world more and more. Unlike Man of Steel's repetitive last half, it's thrilling right up to the end.

I'd give it a C+ on the whole and with a better leading man and script, it'd be in the B territory.

Cool.
How'd you rate Star Trek Into Darkness and Fast Six earlier this summer?

yo jax is a shitty actor forreal. can't believe this director is casting him again for his next film (but at least the rest of the cast will redeem that)

Hunnam's not that bad, but he's one of the lesser actors in this movie. I wouldn't say he's forced, but the redundant script doesn't give him much to work with, a shame since it's decent otherwise and avoids some cliches that would take me out of the experience (no kissing, only an implied bond). Only guy lower than him is the main Striker pilot, who barely gets a chance to act (he had an accent, the krazy Russians didn't even have an accent, what gives?). Everyone else ranges from similarly acceptable to quite good—not that I was expecting top-tier acting (would be a big plus).

Guys, this does exactly what it sets out to do, no bullshit allowed, and it delivers it all with aplomb. Knowing that the whole idea of kaiju and jaegers is basically absurd, Del Toro's wise enough to let the action set-pieces and sheer invention provide humor. I actually think Of The Bull should have added in a full-on day-time brawl, though. Both big battles take place in truly murky situations, even with Hong Kong's neon lights and such. The director loves tenebrism, but I value variety and rhythm above sheer set-pieces. Thankfully, everything else about the battles goes beyond the call of duty—there's even time for an office joke. Since some people are wondering: the CGI's rock-solid awesome. I may not have as good an eye for defects and errors as others, though; the only iffy-looking part in the movie is the water chamber Stacker uses as a conference room, which has noticeable green-screen.

Music's mediocre—I won't remember anything except the main theme (which itself has a dull melody). I watched this in Real3D in a wonderful atmosphere (clapping at the right moments, good crowd); action's surprisingly clear to view, especially with depth enhancement. Scientist's and Chau are both worthwhile, putting in surprisingly good performances (and Chau's got something up his sleeve, too). Above all, Pacific Rim's consistent. The drama sticks to its tropes without seeming hackneyed (one scene involves visiting Mako's memories in the midst of a neural connection, which is surreal); the action's the best I've seen in a while, with breathing room and infinite amounts of destruction kept in the background; if anything, there's a great amount of world-building that implies numerous things about the dramatis personae and how people live, all without directly revealing these things. That, to me, is the best kind of character development for this kind of story, where the stakes are informed by rich context.

tl;dr It's the best blockbuster featuring shoes. ****/*
