Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

- No VA? Is that on my end?

There will be VA for the main storyline quests when the game launches - it just isn't in the beta. Regular and Class quests will not have voices, though.

- No FPS view that I'm aware of?

iirc, the Home key goes into first person view.

- The game seems incredibly easy which is kind of frustrating. It feels like Neverwinter, japanese edition. I want to sink my teeth into an mmo, not play it like some social game.

They need to make the dungeons a bit harder. I know it's just the first 3 dungeons, but you can almost ignore the boss mechanics and zerg it down quickly. Needs to be a bit more punishing so players can learn the mechanics for later battles.

- Pvp? Does this exist and to what extent?

I think it's either coming phase 4 or at launch. 4 v 4 and 8 v 8. Later, they are adding a realm vs realm large scale PVP kind of thing.

- Have they established if this game will have a monthly fee? If so, man...they need to justify that a little more.

Yes, entry fee is $12.99 a month. If you want more characters, you can pay more, but not sure why you'd need that.

Whompa just FYI main quest lines will be voiced in the retail release. I don't think they'll be adding voices for all the sidequests. Maybe we'll get them for class/job quests at least?

ahhhh beaten

Cool. That intro was just AWKWARD without any VA...

I'm out then. That's a straight up ripoff. There are so many MMOs out there that almost do this EXACT thing, but for free...they micro-transaction in smarter ways.

Unless the next phases really drives this game home, it's going to get snuffed out by EQ:Next or Elder Scrolls Online easily...for a game that has been in development this long, it's still way behind the curve.

- No VA? Is that on my end?

VA will be added in during Phase 4/Launch.

- Walls of friggen text.

Eh, comes with the territory of a large scale MMORPG that attempts to have any sort of coercive story. For the most part you can speed your way through it (Outside of the initial intro).

- No FPS view that I'm aware of?

Zoom in all the way with the mouse scroll.

Game Director has been quoted to say they are looking into implementing hard mode type stuff. Also, if this is in reguards to 1-15, it's meant to be that way as an introduction to new players.

- Pvp? Does this exist and to what extent?

Not sure to what extent yet, but we're supposed to be testing it during Phase 4.

- Have they established if this game will have a monthly fee? If so, man...they need to justify that a little more.

There's a monthly fee. Can't find the link for the pricing page at the moment, but for Non-legacy I believe it's $12+ a month.

I really hope they don't go the route of free-to-play. There's enough of those already. And based off of what Yoshida said + the fact that FFXI still carries one, they probably never will.

Can anyone help with a Marauder quest that's really stumping me?

It's the one at Moraby Docks (?), where the ship Victory is being constructed; I'm at level 15.

Specifically, how do you hand items in your inventory to NPC allies? I keep losing the fight because C'Nangho (sp?) can't cure herself quickly enough to offset the blows from the enemy boss. I can hold my own against the boss; it's the allies who are always in trouble.

I have no problem with a monthly fee, but I don't think ffxiv offers enough or anything different from the thousands of other mmos to warrant a sub fee.

I got into the Beta last night and was mixed on my experience.

Mind you I did not have much time to engulf myself last night, and will be returning tonight, but already I have a few minor quibbles.

- The into is waaaaay to friggin' long. You sit there watching some non-sense about serenity and peace and whatever. No option to skip, and when you do get to skip a scene it doesnt feel like you skipped anything at all because you are ushered to the next cut-scene. Literally you do not control your character for the first 20 minutes after you create and start the game.

- After you finally start the game, you do a bunch of running around quests for the next 20 mins. No combat whatsoever. I'm collecting pots, handing over letters, making frowny faces...give me a break! I played for a total of 1 hour last night and didnt get to kill a single mob yet, so I cant comment on the combat yet.

All in all, its a beautiful game, the healing animation I got to use on my conjurer looked great! I am just worried that this game may be a little too JRPG for my tastes. Already I am getting annoyed by quests with walls and walls of text that you can only "click" to get through.

I am going to give it another go tonight and update my feelings on the game in this post.

Since a Marauder is a tank, aren't you supposed to be tanking those enemies for the NPC? That'd be what I would try.

Can anyone help with a Marauder quest that's really stumping me?

If you mean like potions or something, you can't heal NPCs with potions. I didn't do that quest yet but since as MRD you are a tank not a DPS I wouldn't be surprised if it's a fight very similar to the level 15 GLD quest. That would mean you're supposed to be grabbing hate on all those enemies and positioning them properly, not letting the NPC take the hits.

Personally, I prefer sub fees over lots of microtransactions. The idea of paying something like $2.99 for an extra bag slot just kind of annoys me (just using that as an example). When I play one, I never feel like I'm on an even ground with other people who spend money on the game. *shrug*

I'm not saying ARR is worth the sub fee right now, but I would rather play it than the free-to-play stuff.

You don't hand any items, or heal the npc. You just kill the mobs one by one, maybe if you want attract the attention from a few of them, but you're probably not killing them quick enough and that's why he is dying.

You have to do the level 20 levequests but the actual levequest doesn't matter. Thunderhooves can potentially spawn on any of them. He will appear near the pool of water down below the general area of the leve.

Thanks!

What happens when new jobs show up? Let's consider ACN. A summoner's primary stat may be MND while a scholar's may be INT. What if DRK gets added as a job for GLD and they need STR and INT and you put all your GLD points into VIT? What if PGL gets a lightweight thiefy type job (DEX primary stat) or something like dancer (maybe a mental stat becomes important)? Suddenly that attribute distribution at the class level (not job) becomes important.

Right now it feels hollow and pointless but as they add more jobs those 30 points may start to matter a lot more. They will provide a way for players to further specialize their classes for specific jobs once more jobs are added. But, yeah, not right now.

I was thinking about this a couple of days ago when wondering how I would allocate stat points to an Arcanist. Have SE said anything about being able to reallocate your stat points in the final game or in the future?

Herre I must admit to complete ignorance of MMO terminology: what does "tanking" mean, specifically, aside from having a lot of HP and being able to absorb a lot of attacks so that others can do damage?

I tried standing in between the enemy and C'Nangho and swinging at him head-on, but his attacks continued to hit her. Is there a way to get him to attack me instead?

Handing potions to allies is so fundamental to RPGs that it never occurred to me that it wasn't possible in this game. I kept thinking I was doing it wrong, or that I wasn't close enough to her to actually hand it over. What can I do on my next attempt to draw enemy attacks away from my allies?

In Phase 2, by that point it was just, go around, look for fates, occasionally stumble on new locals. It was still fun, but the highly structured tasks fell away around then.

I imagine Phase 3 is similar. Square isn't going to want to put out too much of the final games content into the beta after all.

Yup, I wouldn't expect too much end game related content in phase 4 either.

I'm out then. That's a straight up ripoff. There are so many MMOs out there that almost do this EXACT thing, but for free...they micro-transaction in smarter ways.

Sounds to me you need to do some research on bulk subscriptions and the advantages. (as someone said though you are most likely not going to need Alts in this game)

(What does DPS stand for?)

Damage Per Second, I think he meant DD which is Damage Dealer.

Soken is amazing and I appreciate his style, but damn, NO ONE can compare to Naoshi Mizuta. No one. That man is a master of emotion. ARR needs more of him. I've been listening to a lot of the FFXI songs and every one of them has that amazing emotional peak that is crafted so perfectly.

Herre I must admit to complete ignorance of MMO terminology: what does "tanking" mean, specifically, aside from having a lot of HP and being able to absorb a lot of attacks so that others can do damage?

A tank is a character with a lot of HP and defenses so that they can absorb attacks as you said. The other part of that however is that they are given abilities to attract the monster's attention away from the squishier party members. In FFXIV it's called "emnity". You should have a few abilities that have "Additional Effect: Increased enmity" and those will help you attract the monsters' attention.

tl;dr - Make sure you are hitting enemies that are attacking your NPC to get their attention.

DPS = Damage Per Second, it's a weird term that just indicates that class' primary role is to do damage. They are usually very squishy and should not be getting hit by monsters. It's your job to protect them.

As soon as I get Micro-transacted in an MMO I delete it off my HDD. I would rather pay a fee than get nickle and dime like all of those F2P MMOs do. If you are really into the game you end up spending just as much if not more in a micro transaction model. I feel like I am playing a facebook game when they start begging me for money for bag slots/character slots/travel/new classes/some erroneous currency that lets me do something in game. Especially for how janky they are. I have tried them all and very few of them have the level of polish this game does.

EQ: Next sounds good but again I dont like most F2P MMOs because of the pay structure. ESO, lets get real. That game is going to be a bigger disaster than SWTOR.

I was thinking about this a couple of days ago when wondering how I would allocate stat points to an Arcanist. Have SE said anything about being able to reallocate your stat points in the final game or in the future?

In 1.x there was an item, http://mooglebox.com/entries/the-keeper's-hymn.php, that you could get one of when finishing a job quest (I think...). This one-use item that you could only get up to 7 of, ever, could be used to reset your stat allocation on a single class.

I still have all 7 of mine.

SE has said there will be some way to reset points. Since keeper's hymns are still in the game I would assume this will be the method of allowing resets. As for how to get them in ARR, no one knows yet. Chances are they won't be super easy/cheap since otherwise that would just further undermine the significance behind distributing your stats for a specific job.

I love having my chocobo fight with me, but they really need to let you be able to mount your chocobo battle companion when you have it summoned. Being forced to dismiss it, mount your chocobo, ride to somewhere else, use another gysahl green to resummon it, and repeat is kind of annoying. Also, they need to make it more obvious which battle stance your chocobo is in because there's no current way to tell. This would be a simple fix like either putting a buff on your chocobo saying "Attacker Stance" or even just lighting up the icon on your bar of the stance your chocobo is in.

I left feedback on the beta forums - hope they give it a read.
It'd be really cool to be able to hop on your chocobo as it fights with you and stuff. Could just make it where once it isn't engaged it acts like a normal one. I hope they consider it.

Although the people on that forum don't seem to take too kindly to anything that implies the game is imperfect as is.

Can you link the thread?

Well I'm not exactly well verse in MMO but:

Tanking is referring to you draw all of your enemy's attention towards you and away from your allies so that the DD (Damage Dealers) can focus on taking the enemy down without being rip apart like a paper bag. This means that tanks are usually those who have a tons of HP or Def.

If you're a Marauder then your abilities for increasing enmity (the more you have, the more enemy will focus on you) are Overpowered, Tomahawk and the Heavy Swing > Skull Render Combo. One of the tips that I would give is to read the skill description as they're pretty straight forward in showing you what their uses are. In the Main Quest, you can just pretty much spam Overpowered to draw enemy towards with little consequence. On dungeons however, people may get annoy if you're draw in more than you can chew.

Lastly, DPS stands for Damage Per Second and it's really just another term for Damage Dealer in this case.

As a tank you need to draw the ennemy attention by generating more enmity then you'r allies, you generate enmity. by doing dommage, but also by having specific skill ( usually with 'Increased enmity" in it's description ). I don't know marauder well but if http://www.ffxivinfo.com/class/marauder.php is up to date with the ARR skills then you will want to use Skull Sunder ( in combo with Heavy Swing ) and also Overpower.
You can probably also take skills from other classes you level, which could help you generating that enmity, like Flash from gladiator. ( don't know if that skill is a good advise since you need mp, again I don't know marauder very well )

stats stuff
One thing I'm wondering about is how they talked about streching classes to make certain jobs fit - like DRK on GLD.

I wonder if you'd want to have STR on GLD for that. They said they're planning to let you pay to respec eventually right?

Sounds to me you need to do some research on bulk subscriptions and the advantages. (as someone said though you are most likely not going to need Alts in this game)

No. I've done my share in MMOs. It's not worth the sub fee. Sorry. It offers an equal amount of content to lots of games out there right now that have better price models. I'm optimistic for the next phase...but this is bare bones.

Zoom in all the way with the mouse scroll.

So I can now assume you are not in the beta. Why are you giving me advise to stuff you don't know the answer to yourself? I tried that...unless you have to scroll in then scroll in AGAIN to have to function, that doesn't work.

I think you underestimate the userbase of Elder Scrolls. Bethesda might have pissed off some sub group of core players, but I can see that game reviewing pretty well and a lot of gamers, who aren't you or me, getting into it...

Really? When was the last time Everquest was relevant?

I haven't followed the new Everquest at all, but SoE did a good job handling PlanetSide2. I'll most likely check out the new Everquest once it comes out, but ARR has me firmly in its camp so far.

Oh that'd be awesome if you could hop on your chocobo as it fights, haha.

Sure, here is the thread.

Tried it...unless you have to scroll in then scroll in AGAIN to have to function, that doesn't work.

I wish you could just scroll in further on the mouse to go into first person, but it doesn't seem to work. Pressing Home on the keyboard will put you in that view, though.

As a Gladiator, you get to put points into either STR, DEX, or VIT. VIT seems like the best bet since that is extra HP, but I can see a case being made for STR since that's increased melee damage and is useful for threat or simply for soloing. But DEX? According to everything I read, that is ranged damage... why is that even an option? So players can accidentally waste their stat point allocations? Just seems like a system that is designed to offer some sense of illusion of freedom to me, with little advantage for the player.

DEX also increases chance to block/parry.

- Pulling a mob too far from it's pathing causes it to retreat eventually and it will become invulnerable until it retreats back to it's starting position. When it returns it will immediately regain ALL of it's HP...it's really REALLY frustrating.

This has been a fairly standard mechanic in the MMO world for 9 years or so. It's to prevent cheesing through fights, prevents people from creating mob trains in the zone and the disruptions that causes, and let's you get away from mobs you didn't mean to aggro or can't actually take.

If you're looking for something more hardcore than that in the game world, ARR isn't likely your game.

I will say, I just dislike it since I end up accidentally doing it as an archer since the whole point is to snipe and kite like crazy and I usually end up somewhere far away from where I started just to watch the monster run back and heal itself.

Just kite in a circle...depending on the hit box of the mob when I tried archer in this game I was able to kite in a circle and never take damage. The size of the circle depended on the size of the hit box.

I'm mostly fine with the mechanic for normal leveling, since it does avoid issues like training mobs to the exit of a zone. Glad they removed that because this issue was one of the main problems with the Dunes in XI. There was always at least one group training gobs, wiping other groups in the process.

You do not get this mechanic, btw, in actual instances. Mobs will continue to follow you until either you or them die.

Any tips for a level 17 THM on Duty, Honor, Country, and the level 15 class quest?

I get destroyed by the monster in DHC (avoiding the mage) even with hi-potions+antidote, and the same with the class quest. I can barely take on one enemy at a time. :( Help, I've been stuck at this point since last weekend.

I am going to give it another go tonight and update my feelings on the game in this post.

I had that same problem when I first started it up. I remember I picked the conjurer for my first character and I didn't get to killing enemies until lvl3, let alone those beginning unskippable cutscenes drew me off the game. I've created 4 characters already and now it seems a little shorter since I've done the starting quests like 6 times already, but it's still boring.

You are right the beginning is unbearable. It's mostly just fetch this, talk to this person, and use this emote on this NPC quests.

The game starts picking up immensely once you start getting levehests and guildhests. The dungeons are pretty fun too. I'm not sure when you start getting these kind of quests but I think it's around lvl12. So just hold out until lvl12 and then all those boring quests you have to do will pay off. You'll have a lot more fun then.

I'm honestly not seeing how people are finding the game opening unbearable. The starter quests are pretty fantastic for familiarizing yourself with your town and setting you out on the right path. Beats the Adventurer's Coupon starting in XI.

The time it takes from when you create the character till you are finally out of the city and can fight something indeed takes far to long. That's an issue I had with FFXI and the first version of FFXIV. It just took to long to get to the point where you could actually do something. Even then the process to do something take longer then it should or just feels slow. It's just really annoying in the end when one doesn't have a lot of time.

Although the people on that forum don't seem to take too kindly to anything that implies the game is imperfect as is.

Put it in the suggestion forum and avoid the general forum like a plague lol.

You're comparing limited level 1-30 content to full on games. Anyways, Teletraan1 said it best.

Whompa said:

Whoops, mixed that up with another action. Hit the "Home" key on your KB, that switches it to first person mode.

While I think they did a decent job of trying to teach people how to get around town, emotes and the like, there probably should be a better balance. Until then, it's entirely possible to skip all the fetch quest they start you with and go straight to your class guild, get your first class quest (kill some stuff) and just start grinding mobs if you want to ignore all the story stuff.

Well last weekend I was mining. sold 100 lighting (and another type can't remember) shards for 50/shard (I'm more of a volume seller kind of guy) and they both sold within the hour. I'm only a lv8 miner and it didn't take long (maybe like 30-45 mine all of it).

Not sure how it is right now since I have been good for gil since last weekend (did miner and botanist for a few hours)

Cool! Are gathering points infinite, or do you exhaust an area and have to move on? Any idea if a botanist make some gil off their crystals like this as well?

From recent interview, as a prospective crafter:

• Mondes Persistants (MP):
With the arrival of new dungeons and raid gear, will the crafts stay relevant to high-level players?

• Naoki Yoshida (NY):
Well, there will always be an interest in the craft level.* The following answer is under checking due to some audio problems, we apologize for the inconvenience. The article will be updated once the answer has been confirmed *

Was totally blueballed by this >_<

They basically refill or respawn as you use them on the map so basically infinite.

Yes, botanists can do the same thing as they can mine up shards as well.

Some people might complain because they are rolling multiple characters and having to sit through it more than once, along with the prospect of having to do it again at phase 4/launch. That is really a non-issue since most people will only play a single character and none of these quests are repeatable on other classes or jobs.

In addition, a lot seasoned players would prefer to just jump right into the action with little instruction and figure things out on their own. I understand this but they're being very narrow minded. This game needs to appeal to wide range of people and will be introduced to a large audience that is completely unfamiliar with MMOs.

You can store some items at the Inn and will eventually unlock retainers which are used to store and sell your items. You can have a maximum of 2 retainers, both of which have a pretty generous amount of inventory space.

I've tried at the inn but it doesn't work? Am i doing something wrong or can you not in the beta?
