Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Review Thread

damnit, is it on the eshop yet? I need to buy my games digital nowadays since I moved to Brazil...
Bear in mind that if your eshop account is priced in euros and if this is a 45€ game, you might be better off buying a download code from game.co.uk. They're usually £30-32. Also, I read somewhere that they only work on euro eshop accounts when the version on your eshop is the same as the UK one, ie games such as Layton where there's a separate version for each language in Europe won't work.

If you already have a UK account, disregard the above, obviously.

The other installments had the same problems with secret hiding and interaction with the scenario.
That's what I suspected. I've played them all, but I guess I'm at the age where I forget stuff very very quickly after finsihing a game, so I'm always vague about the details. That's the thing though, my vague memory remembered SS as being way more open than the linear corridors I've been getting into so far.

Oh well, I should probably refresh my memory about those games before really criticising DTB. I'm gonna play some more right now, I've got the feeling it's gonna get better from now on.

Good tip, thx! I got a uk 3ds, i lived in the uk for a year and a half before Brazil. Will look at the game.co.uk cards!

Edit: just checked, it's a 39,99 euro game

I played and loved the first one, played the second one and enjoyed it, but not the third one and Idk any story about it.

Would you guys recommend it knowing how I liked it? Also is the 3rd game have anything to do with the 4th one? Or is it completely different? And was anythign introduced in the 3rd one?

Man, I love this game. Shits all over the third one its not even funny. Way, way better paced. Can´t stop smiling.

So far it has nothing to do with 3rd one. Except the cast members obviously.

Damn. Might need to peruse me some Flubit later... I did however promise myself I wouldn't buy any more 3DS games until I'd beaten Luigi's Mansion 2 and Fire Emblem. Animal Crossing has made me a poor man.

Still on the fence. Just got my EDGE copy, read the review and the slow beginning/ 2 hours tutorial puts me off, but then again I loved Superstar Saga ( never played BIS tbh, should have played but my backlog is massive ). Still waiting for some other reviews ( I thought the embargo was over ? )

I've been playing for about an hour now, and while it has a bit of a slow start (as do all of the Mario & Luigi games), as soon as you get to the Dream World, the battle mechanics transform into something wonderful.

I've been looking forward to this game for a while, but I was a bit concerned that the lack of Bowser/babies might mean battles get a bit stale (I thought that the various Luigi special attacks were the only real new feature in battles, but would just be the equivalent of Bros. Attacks/items), but fortunately, the battle mechanics in the Dream World are by far the best seen in the M&L series. It's not only fun, but you're able to tackle very large groups of enemies at a time, and dispatch them quickly, so fights don't seem to drag.

I'm not far into it at all, but as first impressions go, it's off to a brilliant start.

Oh, and the visuals and music are by FAR the best in the series. I can't stop smiling at the battle themes.

EDIT: Holy shit, the very next fight after I posted that just wowed me even more. Seriously, the battling mechanics in this game make the previous games look like crap. Just being able to actually move makes all the difference.

Same here. The absolutely same here.

This game sounds awesome, I'm gonna pay it off when I get my next paycheck so I can pick it up and play it immediately when it comes out.

Okay, thank God the game got a whole lot better as I had hoped/expected. The first 2-3 hours were a snoozefest (get it?). As soon as you get to the first real area, the game opens up significantly. It's still easy as pie to figure out what to do, but at least they let go of your hand for a bit. I'm pretty confident this set the tone for the rest of the game, so if this holds up it can count itself amongst the better M&L games. The level-design reminds me of Skyward Sword a bit, so take that as you will.

I'm just in love with the art-style btw, it is just beautiful, same with the music. Nintendo has really gone all the way with their soundtracks ever since Mario Galaxy, they keep nailing them lately.

As of now, my main downside would be the dream parts, they seem very lacking in creativity. I'm sure I've yet to really see anything in that regard, but this is their chance to really go crazy and so far it's very conservative.

So yeah, don't be like me and get down after playing the first part of the game; it gets a whole lot better soon.

Really don't know if I should buy this tomorrow or not. I'm in the U.K and have the original 3DS which I can use to buy this tomorrow. On the other hand i have a US 3DSXL and i'll also be getting SMTIV next week.

I'm so tempted to get this tomorrow but i'm wondering if its best to wait for the US version and play it on a larger screen, hmm.

Do you mean
Mushrise Gardens?

They did just leave you to your business once you got there. My playclock only says 2:45 for the end of it though, so maybe you mean the next area, and if it gets even better, no argument from me. The area was enjoyable and the boss
Grobot was interesting, if a bit easy. Hopefully the later bosses have more diverse attacks, because he only really had two very simple ones.

It's also odd that bros attacks are(minor spoiler?)
Split into separate attacks for Mario and luigi now.

Pros: Meaty adventure, fun battles, groovy music, good humor, imaginative dream sequences, a lot of freedom

Cons: Some childish dialogue, some awkward pacing

As a second opinion, it was given a 9/10 where the other reviewer said there was almost nothing about the game they didn't like, from the addicting setup and progression to the battles and the completionist hunting. They also praised the variety.

Our review, in Italian sorry :D

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. is a worthy incarnation of the series born on GBA. It sports an awesome visual compartment, together with offering amazing variety of situations. Alphadream's last work is surely one of the best titles to play on the beach this year

Less successful are the game's visuals which, particularly on Pi'Illo Island, have a Donkey Kong Country-style waxy jaggedness. As a result, this is an uglier game than the previous and handsome DS title, even if the all-new 3D effect is folded lightly but usefully into gameplay during battles. The script, too, fails to live up to previous Mario & Luigi titles for whim and wit. While the usual Nintendo weight and sheen is present in the dialogue, the humour has an unexpected thinness, especially in the first half of the game before antagonist Antasma - a bat-king who shares Bowser's fondness for pointless and rather artless princess kidnapping - forms an alliance with the lizard.

This is an enjoyable but rarely essential entry to the Mario & Luigi suite, then. AlphaDream is to be commended for its willingness to build each new game around a different kernel of an idea, but, perhaps inevitably, some of those ideas will be smaller than others.

Eurogamer review

On the other hand...
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. continues the streak of grand titles on the Nintendo 3DS and completes the trifecta in the Year of Luigi quite well. The experience is rock solid, except for the slow burn in the first few hours and a sometimes-disappointing 3D effect. For the rest, you will find great enjoyment in the various gameplay elements, abilities and clever ways the game progresses. It is a fun filled adventure through and through, which should keep you occupied for a long time. Best entry in the series yet? Without a doubt. But it also appeals to newcomers, making it an easy recommendation for anyone.

Summary

Pros

35 hours and counting
Beautiful visuals and soundtrack
Cleverly written game
Fun gameplay elements
Plenty of variety

Cons

3D could have been better
Slow burn in first hours

9/10
Nintendo World Report review

I don't know about you guys, but I'm much more likely to trust a publication that doesn't have the word 'Nintendo' in their name.

So I'm about 6 hours in and I can safely say that this game is better than BIS.

!! SPOILER !!
That dream world section just before you save Peach OMG!! And Luigi talked! Dat music! Just WOW, THIS GAME!
That Bowser fight was awesome too, notice how he use his BIS moves, enhanced by the bat guy just like how Luigi makes Mario stronger.

This game is really wondeful, I'm enjoying and taking my time to complete all the challenge before moving to the next zone.

i haven't seen them being much less credible than any other review site, it's not like they can give 10/10s to everything and maintain an audience that trusts their reviews. if anything you'd think they'd be aware of this and grade harshly just because of that stigma

So I've been playing this on my 3DSXL for about an hour and I like it so far but what I wanted to ask you guys is this:
Do all your 2D graphics look really blurry and low res too? I feel like this is just very none Nintendo to deliver such low quality assets... it can't only be the upscaling right? The map on the touch screen looks hidious and the buttons like SAVE etc... all look shockingly bad.
The characters look blurry too but all the rest (the 3d stuff) looks nice and sharp.

Opinions?

The character sprites could do with being a bit sharper, but they're not too bad. However, the map screen and save icon in particular look abysmal.

Eurogamer gave a 7? Haha, not surprised

The Verdict

Mario and Luigi Dream Team has great moments, but they’re almost always confined to its psychedelic dream sections, which teem with imagination and invention. Consequently I always found myself enjoying these sections far more than its overworld exploration, turn-based combat, and more traditional RPG elements. It's an uneven experience, but occasionally it grasps greatness, making it a worthy addition to an already distinguished series.

8.0
Great
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is packed with charm and imagination, but its very best ideas are unevenly spread

+Constantly changing
+Standout dream sections
+Full of humour and charm

– Sluggish opening
– Overworld seems bland after dreams
