Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Review Thread

At least this time it's not really painfully slow, but it's long and the game considers you never touched a videogame in your life.
Neat ideas during battles to prevent your total boredom though.

YES! Thank you random store that released it today!

That card is the manual... Well I don't care. I love these games to death. If it's just as good as BIS, I'm happy!
I think Nintendo is going all out on e-manuals. Check the game's icon on the 3DS home menu for the manual.

Bit the bullet and preordered the game, hopefully I'll get it tomorow but saturday morning will be fine. Only played Superstar Saga back then and add a blast so I'm not worried about enjoying this.

The least Nintendo could do is allow for these to be turned off. Some of us just aren't new to these games and don't need to suffer through the godawful tutorials.

I cannot believe we're still waiting another month over here in the states.

I cannot believe we're still waiting another ~6 months for SMT IV here in Europe.
I cannot believe we were waiting another ~3 months for Fire Emblem here in Europe.

You US gamers don't have it that bad ;).

Swedish magazine LEVEL gave it a 9/10.

I didn't actually buy the magazine to read the entire review but in mentioning the standout positive they said that the soundtrack was phenomenal with almost no remixes in it, while the standout negative was the game being too easy. They also mentioned one of the more surprising aspects was a clever achievement system(?) that turns it into one of the more addicting portable games in recent history.

I'm torn on this. I actually grew to despise Partners in Time before putting it down and had a lot of gripes with Bowser's Inside Story as well, the platforming and pacing of those two games just didn't click for me despite rave reviews and plenty of love for the Paper Mario RPG's. Now we're here again, glowing reviews, etc. Interested to hear any impressions from folks coming from a similar place if they happen to pick this one up.

My copy arrived this morning, I've just started and it already looks and sounds fantastic. I hope it washes away the stench from Sticker Star.

I think the achievement system is the Challenge System, where you have a long list of different conditions you can meet to get a achievement and some points.

For example it is "Only do Jump attacks and get Excellent on all of them for a battle" or "Dodge everything during a battle".

The different conditions escalate and change during the game, and those could be the achievement system (or it is introduced later in the game from where I am)

Chances are you won't like this one either, I think. The platforming is really light, so if challenging platforming is important to you, you'll be disappointed. The pacing also suffers from tutorial characters that explain everything to you pretty much throughout the game.

It's nevertheless a great game, though. It looks great, it sounds great, it has a lot of creative ideas, the battles are a lot of fun, the dream world gimmicks are cool and the humor is funny (though, I think that the other games were better in that regard).

I love this series but so far I'm not feeling Dream Team Bros. I'm about 3 hours in and it just feels like a giant tutorial, you keep getting interrupted for the most asinine shit. The dream parts have been very boring so far, very unimaginative.

Every time I get to a new location I'm seeing all these opportunities for little secrets they could have hidden in the game that just aren't there: "Hey, there's an open window, maybe I can jump through and get to a balcony on the other side?" Nope, just an invisible wall. Stuff like that happens all the time, there's nothing there. In its defense, I'm not sure the even other games did this, but it feels so restrictive in everything it does so far.

It still a solid game, but I'm expecting a lot more out of it from here on out. Music's great though and I love the graphical style.

Hmm, I'm planning on upgrading to an XL and was hoping to see a good price before now so I could play Dream Team on the shiny new system, but there aren't any good deals here (Australia) at the moment :( I guess the old OG 3DS will have to do!

I loved superstar saga on the GBA but could not get into PIT and that resulted in me not even picking up BIS. I'm on the fence about this game.

The other installments had the same problems with secret hiding and interaction with the scenario. Anyway, this game is supposed to be much bigger and longer than any of the older ones, so I think that's why it takes more time to get started with it.

Partners in Time is the black sheep of the series. Don't let it keep you away from Bowser's Inside Story.

About 3:30 in, just got the first bros. attack, it sure took a loooooong time to get it. Finished all the challenge I could do so far.
Game is tons of fun and just wow at the musics!

damnit, is it on the eshop yet? I need to buy my games digital nowadays since I moved to Brazil...

It'll be up around midnight.

Played 2 hours, game is good. The dream sequences are interesting. Dreamy luigis animations in battles are great, and they're a lot more interactive than previous games, which is fun.
I'm already ready to say the game is better than sticker star, so there is that. It plays exactly as you would expect, and quite a few of the tutorials are skippable, but then some others aren't for some reason. I guess starlow doesn't want to shut up.

game looks fine... but you know, I wouldn't mind this being the last M&L at least for a while.

super mario rpg, paper mario, m&l.

bout time for a 4th pillar mario rpg no? :D

But yeah, getting this with the 30bucks credit from the promo probably... but not sure if I want this digital.

thx! you convinced me to buy it now. I was getting worried because of everyone here...

I'm 3.5 hours in. The tutorials are annoying, but aren't a reason to pass on this game. I don't remember there being a lot of tutorials after the 2 hour mark anyway, and I suspect it'll get better the farther I get into it. I do hope both the game and the challenges get harder though, but I'm only in the beginning so I'll wait before I pass judgement on that.

Will the game ever shut up and let me fucking play? I hate that so much. In any case no way in hell I'll start another playthrough ever because of those first hours. "Right tempo" my ass.

Nope. Zelda RPG next.

Party of four, choose from Goron, Zora, Deku, Gerudo, Kikwi, Korok, Mogma, Rito etc.

After one hour of gameplay I can confirm what we everyone already know.

The beggining of the game it's too slow in my opinion, and there are so many tutorials (and very obvious some of them). In other installments of the series these "how to play" sections were better implemented in the game.

I haven't seen so much of the island where the game takes place, and despite I think the initial zone was dull and flat, what seems to be the first "dungeon" (still a tutorial zone) has been way better and interesting, with some platforming parts and little puzzles. I have the feeling that the game is about to take off just right now.

Other things. Graphics are outstanding, quite charming and colorful, and animations are great as always. At first I didn't feel the new aesthetics, but now I'm more than satisfied. And music... oh my, THAT music. Sound quality is much better than in DS games and the compositions are just magic and awesome. Mario & Luigi soundtracks have been an absolute "in crescendo" in my opinion.

Great combats, as good as expected, and in spite of having similar physics to Bowser's Inside Story, I think timing is a bit more strict. I have already seen new enemies with clever routines, and the first boss was simple but effective. Probably, Dream Team will have best battles in the series so far.

Ah, and the new "Collection" section in the menu it's a nice addition; It seems that Alphadream has put so much effort in making this game bigger than ever and with lots of optional stuff to do. I just hope that if the main adventure is longer and giant it is because they have so many ideas to put in, and not because they have stretched the game not having the care of not making it too repetitive.

Hmm, I don't know. Maybe the timing is more strict but I like the actual timing better than in BiS, which was the only game in the series where I didn't have a 99.9% success rate with getting perfects for jumping and hammering, including this one.

And yeah bosses are already pretty clever, the previous games kept it tame until later bosses but this one kicked it off early with those. About to fight the third boss btw.

Also, DAT BOSS MUSIC.

Not sure how you can have another pillar for a Mario RPG, since it would have be really different to stand out.

Nope. Zelda RPG next.

Properly won't happen since Nintendo consider Zelda as a RPG.

Did you enjoy bowsers inside story?

If you did, I see no reason you wouldn't enjoy Dream Team.

On the other hand, if you didn't like BiS you probably won't like Dream team.

I loved BIS and Sticker Star. Both were amazing for me so I hope this will be worth the very expensive eshop price!

Pretty much just want something a bit different but still have some timing combat and rpg elements.

RPGs are pretty much the only Mario games with distinct visuals.
