New Killzone: Shadow Fall gameplay

The February demo really impressed me on a technical (graphical) level, this looks nice, but I'm not going "wow" like I did at the end of the presentation a few months ago.

Granted that was completely on rails and this is a wide open combat space. *shrug*

I'm going to use this post as an excuse to post this video of Mercenary multiplayer footage. It's glorious and what some may be wanting that are disappointed in the look and tone of Shadow Fall.

Still not moody enough. Killzone should be perpetual harshness. In the weather, in the lighting, in the environment, in the art, in the characters, etc. The series works best when it's grim, and windy, and dark, and the lighting is dramatic, and the skyboxes look like a hurricane's coming, and muzzle flashes + armor lights are peppering the screen, etc. Some real "not for the faint of heart" atmosphere. What they've shown of Shadow Fall so far looks "okay," but none of it screams Killzone.

Also, this may seem minor, but I really fucking hate what they did with the HUD overlay for crosshairs:

Why did they make it more gamey/part of the HUD UI rather than simply just the scope itself is the crosshair?

Maybe it's just that one gun, but I still really really don't like it.

That and it does the stupid X shit within the circle when you hit someone. Thanks Call of Duty!

I agree, I hope it's just that gun. Killzone 2 had an option to turn off the HUD and rely on memory for bullets in the clip. I'm really hoping it returns.

And let's hope that x goes away, they need to bring it back to the kz2 feel.

I downloaded the yt rip of this video 1080p at 350mb+ to view on my tv and it is filled with compression artifacts up the ass! The b-roll footage was almost the same size and length, yet it was much much clearer. Wtf happened?

Talk about nitpicking. Anyway, I really do hope that the devs don't listen to any of you guys. I'm more interested in seeing their vision for the franchise than a carbon copy of killzone 2 with better graphics. If you like killzone 2 so much, go play it. I like change and I hope that with this iteration, they can perfect the formula for the series. I swear, some people are averse to change. I couldn't believe what I was hearing when people were asking for input lag as a feature. In my opinion, that is as bad as the people asking Microsoft for drm back.

I'm adverse to change that turns Killzone into an arcade shooter. Seems like the changes they made are just copying other games like Call of Duty (Red X on hit detections), not inventing things on their own. Killzone needs to keep its identity as a hard-nosed, gritty, atmospheric FPS.

I don't really see the problem.

I like that the two Killzone games coming out at year's end will have different tones. One is darker and grittier, more like Killzone 2 and 3 (Mercenary) and one is more open and colorful (Shadow Fall). I wouldn't have wanted them to look the exact same, since I want them both.

Looks pretty good, almost more interested in this than Shadow Fall but alas I don't think it's enough to push me into purchasing a Vita. Ya never know though...

Also, the player looks to be really struggling with those analog sticks. Hopefully it's just the player but every time I've played with a Vita, I really come away disappointed with their size, range of motion, lack of stiffness and placement. Sure they're far better than the PSP's but what isn't. I just can't see myself playing MP for any length of time on it. If Vita ever gets a redesign, hopefully they can improve 'em a bit.

And you know that it is an arcade shooter because you have played the finished product? If you haven't, then there is really nothing for you to be complaining about. So yes, I see a problem.

What you need is the Hori grip. Problem solved.

What?...

I'm talking about the HUD crosshairs making it feel like more of an arcade shooter.

Why do we need Call of Duty's red x crosshair bullshit? This is not innovation or vision, this is chasing the coattails of another franchise. All the red X nonsense does is obscure your view from Killzone's (usually) fantastic death animations.

Keep Killzone what it is. Weighty, atmospheric, realistic and cold. There's a huge tonal shift in the cross hair design alone.

Wasn't there cross hairs in killzone 2?

Edit: just checked...Killzone 2 definitely had crosshairs in multiplayer and single player.

So what are you talking about?

Firstly, I just used you as a scapegoat for the complaints in general. The part in bold is wrong. You don't know what killzone is. Killzone is what the creators tell you It is so at one point, it could be atmospheric and cold but it is subject to change. You can say you prefer this atmosphere but you cannot dictate the direction of the franchise. Look, you are sadly mistaken if you think Sony is spending all that money on shadowfall so only killzone 2 fans can buy the game. The ambition they have for killzone is to make as big as its equivalent on Xbox which is halo. I'd suggest you just enjoy it for what it is.

It saddens me to say that this look really...average and boring?

this is coming from one of the biggest killzone fans ever. I dont't understand how Killzone 2 did so many things right yet this look like a massive step backwards.

why is the AI so bad? I am not even exagerating when I say this but the AI routines and animations remind me of killzone 1.

why are the voice actors so forced and cringe worthy?

this looks so uninspired. sigh..

So what are you talking about?

Yes and you could turn the whole HUD off which i hope you can do in this game as well. Total immersion.

I'll probably give this one a try when it releases. If anything, I just like seeing what PS4 looks like in its early stages, since Killzone has always been a metric to measure what the PS4 can do in terms of visuals.

It saddens me to say that this is a poor comment. The game is not done and you are already making complaints as if they were fact. I think it would have been best if they just showed off cg trailers because it's obvious that people cannot differentiate from a completed work and a work in progress. Poor comment.

Such as this.

It's obvious that you can't handle any sort of criticism.

Opinions!

I am basing my opinion from what I have seen so far. Where the hell did I say it was fact? where did I say the whole game is going to be garbage?

I am giving GG the benefit of the doubt because I know they are a talented bunch.

Bravo Guerilla. I am so beyond tired of FPS's, but this actually looks like a purchase for me. It has a bit of a Far Cry or Crysis feel, maybe some Halo.

I really hope that music riff for melee kills is optional though.

Opinions... I thought most kz2/3 characters were ass except Radec and Narville in 2. Sev, rico, natko everyone was unoriginal and the plot wasn't even that good. Kz2 was average, the only good thing was the atmosphere. Kz3 don't even get me started, that story was easily forgettable. To me, Lucas is an original character, a shadow martial. Haven't seen that before in any kz game i played. Echo looks like another original character. This time we got quality voice actors. The ai is polished just like the hit response system as mentioned in an e3 interview. The environments are huge. The Cold War Berlin inspired story sounds original as well. The Bandwagon effect in this thread....

I would really be offended by criticisms if killzone was near and dear to my heart but it's not. What annoys me is the complaining going on in almost all threads about next gen games. Devs are working extremely hard(some without finalized hardware) to bring us the best they can for launch games, then we have people coming with no knowledge in game development stating complaints as if they were fact. I have no problems with people complaining once the games have been completed but at this point in time the games are not yet done. It it's completely illogical to judge games until they are and they're finished state. if you go into the other threads, you will see people making the same type of complaints.

Killzone never has had a good story. Let alone good voice acting...

I'm not expecting much from that front.

It's called constructive criticism, people point out things they would like to see changed because it's precisely what you said - still in development with time to tinker things.

I don't reasonably expect Guerilla to change it just because of my one post, but I'm allowed to vent my frustrations on their shitty design decisions.

I'm very much looking forward to this game, despite some of the usual KZ haters that pop into every killzone thread. Its showing great potential considering its running on early hardware and developer code. Looking forward to Gamescon next month.

Somebody's a little too invested in this.

(And let's not kid ourselves; this game ain't changing much 3-4 months from release.)

The E3 build could have been quite old...it certainly looked a lot less polished than the PS4 reveal footage..

I think there's the possibility for a lot of improvement from the E3 footage, absolutely.

In this video demonstration at E3 they say they are showing uses pre-alpha footage (the Feburary footage) that is half a year old and then they were showing the newly updated model next to it that is close to final.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJGeVS-w8dg

Unfortunately the camera man decides to not show these things, but still interesting.

Not really, like i said earlier, that post was a scapegoat for the complaints happening in all the next gen threads. i really couldn't care less, i have almost every launch window game preordered and payed in full. i have lots of games to choose from.

I wonder if the move to x86 created frustrations.

PS3 software (KZ 2 & 3) was optimized maximally to run on Cell at near 100% efficiency. All those years spent learning, figuring out tricks, and finding uses for the SPU's have all but went to waste in the face of straight forward stream lined work flow.

Some of the earlier posts mentioned how lack of destructability (trees should be breaking down left and right), precanned animations (the soul of those animations are from previous titles), and the blood spurts are neutered for something worthy of a PlayStation 4 title.

It is a daunting task to create a launch title, but the ante and expectation for Sony's first party is quite high. The timing of Killzone: Shadow Fall could help bring Killzone into the mainstream. I hope the final product makes our eye's blister, but the footage shown here doesn't inspire confidence.

It really does look like a completely different series. Such a departure from Killzone 2 more than just a different setting.

If you put both games up in front of someone clueless the only similarity they would find are the glowing helghast eyes.

That's all just pertaining to what we've seen so far.

The Bird is back!!

welcome back :)

Looks fantastic, the lighting is amazing, massive kz fan and happy at the move to a more open play space and colour pallet change. I cant wait for this at launch, i hope the mp is as good as three with more maps bigger maps kz3 is underrated mp shooter this gen imho.

Watching the melee kill gif, it looks just like KZ3's. Something really fake and cartoony about it - bad animation? happens too fast?

I actually think the animations are too slow and seem too canned.

It needs to be quicker and much more brutal, with some shaky cam to make it seem more visceral -- see: The Last of Us as a good example of how to do those brutal kills.

It's as if the enemies aren't putting up any resistance whatsoever...in the Last of Us it looks like a struggle.
