what a criminal waste of Crimson Typhoon

I'm thinking back on it. And I just can't imagine who the hell EVER THOUGHT building a fucking wall was smarter than to keep funding the jaegers.
Well, to be honest, if the wall is thick enough and tall enough, it would probably stop the kaiju and keep them away from any major cities long enough to blow them up with conventional weapons.

It's just that the kaiju kept getting bigger and could break through the wall in much less time than expected, so that obviously wasn't going to work.

Occulus Rift + Omni Treadmill + Razor Hydra = Pacific Rim: The Game.
This would be a killer Jaeger name.

I really can't believe what I just saw. Most fun I've had since avengers. I'm in shock right now. Fucking Hong Kong...my god. They made this movie for me. All for me. It was a love letter.

I would've even been fine just seeing more scenes of the the pilots of Cherno Alpha sitting around being awesome and Russian.

It is good to see Del Toro's habit of creating awesome secondary characters only to dispose of them five minutes later in a battle where they die like a bitch continues.

In all seriousness, I'm glad he did, just like in Blade2

The man knows how to make you give a shit and evoke a sense of desperation and fear.

And Cherno Alpha. :(

at least Cherno got a fucking punch in

someone shop scumbag steve hat on a pic of Del Toro with the caption
"promote movie with 5 robots, gives 1 more screen time than the other 4 combined"

In all seriousness, I'm glad he did, just like in Blade2

I didn't feel any desperation or fear

the speed in which they were disposed of didn't give me any impression they stood a single fucking chance in the first place, which kills all forms of tension, If he'd had given a damn to show them as forces to be reckon with before killing them then you feel a sense of desperation. But they were cannon fodder and nothing more, that shit was a complete waste

I mean

Cherno Alpha
Crimson Typhoon
Coyote Tango

didn't need to be show at all, that's littler how much of the movie they were apart of

to leading us on with the stat cards and everything like they would be worth a damn, never have I seen a studio go on to promote such worthless characters, but I guess if they advertised the movie for what it actually was (Gypsy Danger variety hour) it wouldn't have been as interesting

]I think two times when the audience in my theater gasped, it was when Gipsy Danger was thrown away from water to the streets of Hong Kong[/B] and the other is when Gipsy Danger slashed the Kaiju with its sword then kinda stays in the space for a while.

That happened in my theater. The whole place when quiet when Leatherback started the spin and let go and nearly everyone gasped as GD went hurling over the air.

no it didn't, that acid spitting bastard was going to kill the shit out of Cherno, the giant emp gorilla was just overkill
Gipsy bumped back after losing an arm and a pilot; I think Cherno could have killed Otachi on its own, since it just lost the visual readout.

That slowmotion hurl of Gypsy Danger over the freeway. I saw it in the trailer but for some reason I was still in awe of that shot.

My fucking movie. Only way it could be better is if the characters winked into the camera after every stupid or corny ass line.

Rocket Punch had me like yooooo

I let out a whispered "wow" in the theater. When the music just drops and he goes flying it's just an amazing moment when you know shits about to get real.

Bah I knew Crimson Typhoon was gonna get screwed.

Also GOD DAMMIT I knew I should've stayed after the credits. I wanted to get home and watch EVO though.

Lots of cool stuff in this film, but some pretty bad dialogue (not sure if tongue in cheek and intentionally cheesy or just outright bad) and absent character development.

Btw how many more movies are we going to get that end with a close up of an alien going "oh shit" before he gets nuked?

Off the top of my head I have
- Independence Day
- Stargate

Any others?

It looks like the Kaijus were also being "manufactured"
There was a glimpse of Slattern's muscle fibers being laid down.

Since it twice now. On second watch I noticed that Mako's escape pod was emitting some type of green gas into the water. It doesn't happen to Raleigh's.

I think the gas only emits when the pod opens automatically. Mako opens Raleigh's pod manually like an emergency escape hatch.

Oblivion
. That's just from this year as well. It's either the nuke or they would infect the alien hive mind with some kind of 'virus' and give them a 'cold', also from from Independence Day, with the borg and dominion in trek.

Why on earth do no other pilots use escape pods, seems like they are valuable and were just sent out to die apart from two protagonists obviously.

Great Scifi movies build a base in some type of reality that gets the audience to suspend belief and start believing or understanding the rules at play in that world. Not only does Pacific Rim gloss over that opportunity, but then introduces a very complex concept of connecting two brains as one to control a mech or to see the future through a Kaiju, yet doesn't even begin to explain how it works or what setbacks can come from such a setup. Therefore it is just there, and when something goes wrong or a plot point is introduced involving drifting, it holds little emotional weight with audience members and makes little sense. On top of a concept that is barely explained being a central part of the plot,
the character development and plot are all over the place. Elba won't let Mako be a pilot because of her desire for "revenge" yet he hand-picked the lead character even though that character watched the Kaiju pull his brother out and eat him. A nuclear bomb has always bounced off the rift, yet they think a mech can somehow enter the rift by itself? How the hell would a newly born monster baby provide information on how the Kaiju enter and leave the rift? Lead character can safely enter a memory and talk to Mako yet Mako can't? How the fuck that mech landed safely is beyond me. And I still have no idea what was the great plan that was going to replace the Jäger movement to fight the Kaiju.

I don't know, maybe the story-related scenes were just so boring that I tuned out and that's what made plot "advances" so hard to follow.. but damn I would like it if some type of logical thinking to go into the plot (even if it is a movie about mechs beat Kaiju up).

1. Pentacost let Raleigh do it because he's actually done it before and has experience. He trusts him. This is even explicitly stated in the film when he says that he and Raleigh were the only two to ever control a Jaeger solo. Plus, Raleigh chose to walk away from the program, it was obvious he didn't want revenge otherwise he would've come back initially.

A nuclear bomb has always bounced off the rift, yet they think a mech can somehow enter the rift by itself?

2. With a mech, they can have a more hands on approach to it. It's akin to a drain being clogged up and getting into the sink to see what's going on and to fix it.

How the hell would a newly born monster baby provide information on how the Kaiju enter and leave the rift?

3. It's part of a hivemind. They said this.

5. I don't really know what you mean by this.

And I still have no idea what was the great plan that was going to replace the Jäger movement to fight the Kaiju.

6. Initial plan was to send missile down. They discovered the missile was just going to bounce back up since the portal would only open to Kaiju. New plan was to ride Kaiju into the portal and blow the other side up.

Final thought: The film WAS logical within its own universe's rules. You just decided to tune them out.

This likely sounds biased, but I think this is the clear front-runner for best visual effects of the year so far. I get the feeling it won't win the Oscar for it though.

Well of course the effects work was great. ILM sent in Knoll to supervise. That's like them sending Winston Wolf.
Edit: Well, sending in either Knoll or Muren.

If only there was a little more Cherno and Crimson action :(
The Transformers RoTF forest battle might still be my favorite, though.

Only story part that was extremely flimsy was the core scientists roamin around alone, having to do that bullshit to get the brain and the teleport back to mission control in time. But I tuned out most of the scientist stuff since it was mostly bad comic relief.

Everything else was well paced and explained well....as long as you believe the whole gotta build monsters to fight monsters thing

Is it really a bad trend if the only examples you can think of are two movies from the 90s?

Its because you need the attacking force to have a moment of realization that they're fucked and they have lost. Otherwise it kinda falls flat in the end.

Excellent movie. I only had a problem with Gipsy Danger being an 'Analog' mech. How do its internal computers work then?

But I got over that real quick when GD pulls out a sword. Holy crap I was just blown away at that little piece of mech fan service.

I loved the scientists. :(

Yeah. It's the satisfying gotcha moment that people want to see. That's why the hero never just kills the villain at a distance. There is always that moment where they look into each others eyes and/or communicate before the hero wins. Audience wants a chance to lick the bitter tears, even if its from an alien

What does piloting a mech solo have anything to do with drifting to control a mech? They specifically say they are completely different experiences and I don't see how Raleigh's experience with that would help him in drifting with a complete stranger to control a mech. It doesn't matter that Relaigh left, he saw his brother die right in front of his eyes while drifting with him and he still had traumatic experiences tied to that (shown by the scene where they test Gipsy out). The guy was a huge flight risk yet he was picked because he was his only opition (only mech 3 driver) and the world was going to end anyways. Yet Mako, who was obviously the best second candidate, couldn't become the second pilot? It just seemed like another unnecessary plot point to add unnecessary drama to the plot.

2. With a mech, they can have a more hands on approach to it. It's akin to a drain being clogged up and getting into the sink to see what's going on and to fix it.

It's a Nuke. The most powerful weapon at mankind's disposal. If it didn't break the barrier then why could a Mech? It is really never explained why Ilba's character thinks a Mech with a nuke strapped to is back could logically enter the Rift.

It's part of a hivemind. They said this.

Ok I know mention this being faintly mentioned during the movie.

4. Lead character has experience. Mako does not. That was the whole point of that scene.

He had experience in not getting distracted by "stray rabbits aka memories", not the ability to enter them and go all Inception on us.

I'm talking about the plan that the government had in plan to replace the Jagers. Was only mention once and then forgotten.

Final thought: The film WAS logical within its own universe's rules. You just decided to tune them out.

No, I just decided to actually try and process what was happening and not just wait for explosions to happen. Halfway through I gave up and then decided to tune out until the battles begin again.

And the mech can be torn apart by one bite of the Kaiju (killing the pilot inside), but yet a drop from over a 10000 feet high doesn't do a bit of damage because somehow a last second thruster propels it enough to stop gravity? The mech barely even slows down. That's what I meant.
