Verdict reached in George Zimmerman case - Not Guilty

The jury believed it was self defense. That is how our justice system works. We are only seeing pieces. Most of you get your information from the media and third party sources. You may not be happy with the verdict, but they system worked.

I'm really astonished by the people posting some variation on this. The purpose of the justice system is to produce justice, not to follow its own rules. The rules exist because we believe that they will lead to justice, not the other way around.

Do you think George Zimmerman should or should not be held responsible for the killing of Trayvon Martin? If you think he should be, then the system has failed. The fact that it failed by following its rules does not mean that it didn't fail -- especially given how often the system fails to follow its own rules when doing so would mean not putting a black man in prison.

No evidence = No conviction. The system works, as far as that's concerned. Prosecution did a great job with what they had, but O'Mara and West put forward a great defense.

Civil suit to come, I'm sure.

Now, I hope we can turn our attention to the gun laws in our communities that help lead to pointless deaths like this.

You guys are way way way to attached to something so stupid. In a week you'll forget about this.

I live in Seminole County, Florida. I won't forget about this in a week, a month, a year. My cousin lives in Sanford, could have easily been him. Dude just got away with murder.

So Zimmerman deserve to go to jail? Trayvon was the aggressor as pointed out, situation could've been avoided IMO. You guys may be mad oh well.

Dude, he killed someone because of his own assumptions. He deserves to be in jail.

This I'd agree with--the mind-blowing part of the whole thing is that there's zero question that Zimmerman killed a kid, and zero question that he essentially started the sequence of events by chasing him down. But, legally, the prosecution had to prove the unprovable beyond a reasonable doubt, because just proving that he did it and he started it wasn't enough.

The news commentator on the livestream I watched mentioned that he thought the defense had the argument won on the legal side of things, but that the prosecution had it on the moral side of things. And it's frustrating that there's such a wide gulf between the two in this case.

Truer words haven't been written in this thread.

Outstanding news. Justice prevailed today, based on the real evidence there was zero reason to convict George Zimmerman.

People aren't just upset because someone they probably don't know got away with murder, they're upset because a precedent has been set.

As long as you can provoke them to be the "aggressor", it's legal to kill an innocent, unarmed minor.

Good, now I will carry a gun, instigate a fight, and shoot the person I harassed and then claim self-defense. I know I will be declared innocent.

totally shameful and disgusting
You know what's fucking terrifying? What you wrote isn't even hyperbole... this is literally the precedent that has been set with this verdict.

This

Prosecution did not do a good job and defense walked over them. Defense won

Where can I find a concise guide as to what happened? From the night of the murder, to tonights verdict? I admit I know nothing about this, I apologize. Why are people so upset with this verdict?

Obligatory

My favorite defense of GZ is that "this should have never went to trial."

That's dumb. This should have went to trial. An unarmed minor got killed by a guy who changed his story a bunch of times and was told not to follow the subsequently killed person.

No matter the verdict this sure as hell should have went to trial.

Jury made the right call. Tragic incident overall but at the end of the day, all of the evidence pointed to Zimmerman acting in self defense.

Mark O'Mara and Don West did a great job.

Not at all, the problem is that there wasn't enough evidence to prove he did not act in self defense beyond a reasonable doubt. Quite ridiculous if you ask me.

Should definitely have gotten manslaughter.

But everybody already knows being black is a crime in of itself in America.

Pretty disgusting. No justice at all. What a ridiculous ass backwards justice system. So did no lesser charge get called? Not even manslaughter?

I had only watched the majority of the Prosecutions case, barely any of the defense's case or the closing statements. The Prosecution had serious problems with witnesses and having a clear statement or message, to disprove the self defense completely. They never presented anything that shows what happened between GZ getting off the phone (at his car) and the final outcome.

I say this, after knowing very little of the leadup. I remember the original story when it hit the media, and then ignored all the details since. The Prosecution just completely botched it, enough that I didn't bother watching the defense (what did they do, present 18 people that claim "that's his voice!"?).

Just getting in the house, but why weren't the lower charges considered? Really thought Manslaughter or the negligent homicide charges would be alot more proveable.

Interesting thing is, if Martin had killed Zimmerman in that scuffle, he would've been found guilty. Even if he had been defending himself against an obvious harasser who happened to be armed.
