No no ENDING SPOILERS
Now that the kaiju are gone, nations compite with their jaegaers for sport and glory (And world government?), cue G Gundam live action.

While it's plausible, I'd like
kaiju('s brain)-controlled Jaegers
on fight. Add chaos & disobedience, so shit could hit the fan.

Thank god for the early stinger because I was dying to take a piss.
Having said that, great movie. I might double-dip it in 3D (very adhoc if you recall the computer UI shots).
I wished the Chinese and Russian had more screentime; they delivered good fighting, after all.

I was already gone by that point, so it was more ongoing joke with friends reaching a boiling point. Also it was a minor complaint, but stems from them looking closer in age than I'd expect a father-son team look. Also the MC and Aussie do look alike, it was weird casting between those three, and its not like any of their performances were blowing anyone off the screen (or even decent) that you had to keep those three. At least get something visually interesting in there.

My complaints were more
Idris's several telegraphed inspirational speeches that weren't inspirational. Main character lacking charisma and acting ability, swagger walking all over the screen the first 40 minutes. Mako's relationship w main character being underdeveloped and not believable. Scientists being embarrassingly unfunny. Perlman a generally joyless, confusing cameo. (see better director-actor cameo: Bruce Campbell in Spider-man)

Australian guy's beef with MC was weird also - "run away like you always do," when did he run away? He worked construction after his brother died and his mech was repaired. He momentarily thought about his brother in a scene where Mako screws up their first drift, yet they have beef. His goodbye with dad nobody cared about because he's never set up as likable. He hates the main character, but they never have a moment of respect, so that's just one of many threads that remains unresolved or dropped entirely in this movie. (see much better rival getting best out of MC: Iceman in Top Gun)
Not enough face-palming images on google for this post.

Yeah, my audience gasped when they found out that that one jerky dude was evil (which is a contender for the most obvious twist in the world) and cheered whenever the Decepticons blew something up (which was a lot). Man, they were just massively misguided :(

Re: del Toro watching anime: Oh, he definitely does. The whole fight with
Metavore in Sydney
seemed like a massive Gunbuster/Macross reference.

Haha yeah!
When it launched the missiles
the pose that it did totally reminded me of Mazinger.

Edit: Aslo,
The elbow rocket was also reminded me of Mazinger's Rocket Punch.

I'm a journalism major and this is the most accurate review I've ever read.

I just don't know what else to say. Every expectation I had was exceeded by orders of magnitude. It's a film that couldn't be more in love with its inspirations while doing something great with them in its own ways. It's so easy to see why that one reviewer compared it to Star Wars now.

Listening to the soundtrack now, does anyone know which track it is that plays when they first suit into Gipsy at the beginning of the movie? Is it the main theme?

Just saw this, what an awesome movie! Honestly came in to watch from the hype and thinking it can't be as good as they say but I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Great summer blockbuster. I want a Yeager model toy so bad right now. Just wish there was more time to develop the Russians and Chinese.

Man, that main theme is so amazing.

Can't stop listening to it

Yeah, I keep playing it over and over in my head all day today. As I'm walking through the house, I hear that main theme. As I was sledge hammering my deck apart this afternoon, that main theme is playing in my head the whole time. As I washed the dinner dishes tonight, all I could hear was that main theme.

And I'm totally okay with that.

Going to see PR again tomorrow, my gf just might be more excited than I am, LOL.

We NEED a live acton G Gundam

You're preaching to the choir! someone suggested earlier that the sequel could be Jaeger vs Jaegers after countries start doing their own shit.

Hopefully the next round of Jaegers only need one operator and they must wear a skin tight suit.

And they have to be compatible with horses.

Wait, how in the name of Great Scott did they get Graham Greene for this piece of crap? He used to live two blocks away from me and was apparently very picky about his roles since he was, y'know, nominated for an Academy Award.

20 years ago. Man's gotta eat.

Seriously guys, watching my 7 year old daughter cheer and clap with each punch from Gipsy Danger to a Kaiju face was fantastic. Both my kids loved it so much, agreeing it was the best movie they've seen in a theater. We were walking out and they were all
ROCKET ELBOW
and whatnot. My daughter asked more than once when it'd be out on Blu-ray.

See the movie was actually very violent and within the first 5 minutes I knew I would not be bring my 8 year old son to see it.

Did you guys just completely tune out the
lunch scene? They very explicitly lay out their relationship in that scene.

Honestly, I thought the
dad was speaking metaphorically. I didn't think they were actually related (they don't look alike, the dad doesn't look old enough to have a son in his mid-late 20s).

Did anyone else not really enjoy the battle scenes? I thought the camera was almost always much too close to the action. I found it all pretty difficult to even process. I guess the darkness and water only made matters worse. It seemed really chaotic and was hard for me to follow...

I really don't know how you could've taken that as metaphoric when it was explicitly stated that he was his father.

I didn't hear that line. Either it was the sound mix or the accents. I think probably the sound mix - it was way too loud in my theater.

Sometimes, I read impressions of a movie, and I just don't understand how something basic and absurdly explicit can be ignored.

Occasionally, yes it was hard to follow. But when you could tell what was going on, it was glorious.

Yeah, that's happening in this thread. I specifically stated that I didn't hear the line where their
relationship was outlined and the dad's use of "kid" didn't sound like he was talking about his own child.
Funny how that happens.

Some of the accents were tough for me to understand but aside from that the movie was exactly what I wanted it took be. Fantastic. My girlfriend even liked it, and she fell asleep during Inception.

movie was so good T_T. the story itself was basic, but that's not why i wanted to see this movie. the 3D was excellent as well. That opening bit in 3D alone blew my mind.

I loved this movie. It's the first time I've been excited to see something , like really excited to see something for YEARS and in the last couple months I kind of toned it down a bit because I was worried I may be setting myself up for a disappointment but god damn it do I love being wrong.

Every one of my IRL friends that watched it in the last couple days had something positive to say so just before going in I was actually expecting something pretty awesome.

I had a brief thought on twitter earlier that I'll relate here - I sat through this movie from begining to end with a smile on my face. I honestly don't know or recall when I last did that for a movie. I've certainly been excited for movies many times in the last 10 years but I think the last time I enjoyed anything this much was in 2002 with the first spiderman film.

Went and saw this early Saturday evening, and I have to agree with my fellow GAF-ers, this movie was so much fun. I legitimately felt like I was eight years old again, that's how hyped up I got. I can't even describe the feeling I got when
Mako mentioned their "one weapon left", and out came a fucking chain sword. The second I saw "SWORD" on the screen, I flipped out.

Also, that fucking theme song, man. I was humming that shit all the way home.

I'd have to see it again but I thought there was some pacing issues with the first hour or so of the movie. Which is a complaint I've see others share on here. Other than that I thought it was great! Some bits of humor and the fights were incredible. My girlfriend even loved it.

Seriously guys, that was amazing.

Gypsy Danger might now be my favourite robot of all time. So fucking badass... the Hong Kong fight... Christ that was fantastic. The final fight doesn't quite nail the absolute of the HK, but it is fantastic regardless... and the ending, awesome.

Really liked all the actors too, especially Ron Perlman and the scientists. Too funny. Our theater was in stitches watching those guys. In fact, everyone seemed to love the fights... when... that moment happens in the HK fight, everyone was like "FUCK YEAH!"

Went a 4:30 AVX non-3D show. Was about half full. I really hope this movie does well enough to warrant a sequel cause... I want to return to this universe.

I thought the pacing was perfect. Once we get to the little Mako scene, the movie goes way up from there.
