Any profitable Pacific Rim would have needed substantial support from the under 25 crowd, which was Grown Ups 2's primary audience. So, Fuck Grown Ups 2.

Yes, blaming another movie for one movie's failure is dumb, but you know what? Fuck that and fuck Grown Ups 2.
 
Overseas is going to have to save Pacific Rim. That's all that can be said at this point. WoM will help but overseas will be the make or break for it.



Can't believe Grown Up's 2 is doing well. It's like people know Sandler's been off the mark lately yet they still keep going hoping it gets better. It's like the CoD effect

Pacific Rim will probably do well in Japan. The casting choices are good as is it gets for marketing.

I'd rather see Guillermo Del Toro do something else in stead of a sequel.
 
So how much total would Pacific Rim have to make to merit a sequel? As far as I know studios usually care far more about domestic than international numbers. If the domestic is shitty but it makes like $200m+ internationally would that actually help the chances at all?

Well it was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (who also directed Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, and the Master). It was also the only major PTA film not to get any Oscar nods for its actors.

Not really. Realistically, the film needed $400-500M worldwide.
 
At least PR didn't do much worse than Grown Ups 2. I wanted to go see it this weekend but something came up. Guess I'll have to try next week.

Usually you have to do about double of the production budget worldwide to make even.

It's a coping mechanism. I was like this at one time, but have worked to get beyond that kind of reaction. A animated movie held it's spot, while outperforming a new comedy, and a new action movie. 3 different genres, 3 different primary target audiences. There is overlap in who will venture out to see these movies, but Pacific Rim's financial disappointment starts with the budget, the marketing, and maybe the genre it's based upon. Maybe $40 mil is the best you can hope for when you're inspired by Godzilla flicks of yesteryear, that is marketed terribly. From the look of the movie, they should have heavily targeted the Saturday? morning. Instead it looks like the small, but rabid kaiju fans were the only ones that it spoke to.

At this point PR can't be 'saved'. It was 'designed' to be a 'AAA' franchise/IP with all the financial milestones ($500m+ WW etc) that one would expect from such a hit.

That now won't be the case so it's a 'one and done'. At least the film was made in the first place regardless of whether any sequels will ever see the light of day.

But general talk seems to be that Bruckheimer and Verbinski will be spending some time in film jail over this.

It's doing solid in Asian areas but not so hot in the rest of the world like Europe and Austrilia. That really isn't enough. It's destined to be a cult movie that didn't make huge numbers at the BoxOffice.

Will need at least 400 mil. Which doesn't look possible. There won't be a sequel. At least there wasn't a cliff-hanger ending.
 
Welp, at least I got my dream movie get made. I really do think bad will from BayFormers contributed to PR performance. It might be a while until another giant robot movie gets made.

Why isn't Bruckeimer already there? He's been making money for Viacom on the TV side and losing money for Disney on the film side.

Right but I would assume it would need to do significantly better than break even to merit a sequel. Seems people are throwing around $500m as the number. I unfortunately can't see PR hitting that. Granted, it has a few markets left to open in.

Despite what the Internet would like to believe, the general population enjoys the Transformers movies. Look how much Dark of the Moon made even after Revenge of the Fallen was trashed by critics.

Pacific Rim was just not a movie the average person wanted to go see.

You say that but Finding Dory is probably going to do very well. I still bet an Incredibles sequel would be a strong performer too. Plus quality aside Cars 2 was still a hit.

Pixar just has to realize not all of their films are really sequel worthy, or even desired. Even before it was announced I definitely would have put Monsters in that category so the fact that University got made is a bit boggling.

The name also doesn't really conjure up "giant robot film".

I thought Pacific Rim was a WW2 flick the first time I heard about it and tuned it out.

Bruckheimer's TV deal is what WB (though you're right that his CSI franchise is now with CBStv) and has been doing great business for the studio for years.

But his mega rich Disney deal hasn't really yeilded anything but expensive misfires since the POTC films. Prince Of Persia anyone?

The thing is ol' Jerry's nearly 70 now and the question must be whether he (or the studios) feels as though he has another big studio deal in him.

At this point the POTC series is a machine that runs itself. He can leave his Disney deal and still (contractually) be involved in the POTC films. Such are PGA rules.

Really? The theater I frequent, they had two screens showing PR in 2D all day long, and only one screen showing two shows of 3D at late night (In the day, it was for DM2 shows).

I wanted to see it in IMAX 3D, but the nearest IMAX theater is a two-hour drive one way.
 
Pacific Rim is not a franchise. Has no stars. Is directed by someone that has not built up an audience. And had confusing marketing.


The writing was on the wall for months. No one has any reason to be surprised.

Was it? Pacific Rim sure wasn't advertised like it was a "AAA" franchise/IP. The lack of great advertising really killed this movie. Fuck
 
Not sure why people are shocked that PR Did so poorly.

We have been saying for weeks it was gonna die @ the box office.

And that Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and Shaquille O'Neal would beat it too.

Pacific Rim is a movie with extremely limited appeal as evidenced by the box office results.

And to anyone crying about it not doing better and didn't pay to see it in the theater...shut up. You are part of the problem.
 
Shouldn't Pacific Rim be an easy movie to market? Big robots. Monsters. 2500 tons Of awesome. 3D.

Marketing budget and focus on MoS wouldn't have helped I guess.

I saw Pacific Rim and wasn't that terribly impressed. It was okay. Not saying Grown Ups 2 is any better, but honestly I don't see why there's so much hype behind it. Then again, I've never been a mech/giant monster guy in the first place.
