I'm not sad that Pacific Rim isn't doing well in the US; the writing has been on the wall for a while now that it didn't have a lot of elements that were going to connect with the average filmgoer. As much as the trailers have underwhelmed, I really don't know if there was a whole lot that they could have spoiled for the film that would really sell the film to them. The film is one huge love letter to certain types of genre filmmaking that don't have a big audience unless it's completely ingrained in our culture, like a Transformers or a Godzilla.
Like others have mentioned, I am sad that this means that it's extremely unlikely that you're going to see a lot of effort in getting these kinds of budgets for original ideas. It's not that Pacific Rim wouldn't be possible with half the budget, but after seeing the final results, I can't imagine it any other way.
On another note, I still have no idea how these Adam Sandler films cost so much fucking money to make; someone in another thread pointed out that That's My Boy cost $70 million, and unless Susan Sarandon and Vanilla Ice are more expensive than I give them credit for, I don't even know where that money went.
