I'm struggling to finish Mass Effect

I'm at that part where you are preparing a nuke and Saran comes down to tussle with you. I heard ME2 is pretty great so I figured, ok well I've bought both on Steam let me start with the first game. Oh I just find it such a chore. And that fucking Mako or whatever shit is so annoying. Is it worth finishing? Is ME2 a lot better?

Mass Effect 1 aged really bad. Unplayable right now.

ME2 and ME3 are alot better, relax.

You're pretty much near the end so I'd just finish it, but I didn't think the sequel was worth the time.

i was enjoying ME quite a bit but i got bogged down with side missions and i'm not really sure what i'm doing at this point. i really want to like this game

it's aged pretty good imo. the scenery can be pretty impressive at times. ... inventory is a mess, i'm sure that's fixed in later games

So not true.

And this depends on what you mean by better Logz. Do you want more actiony Gears of War style shooting mechanics? ME2 and ME3 are full of those, but the roleplaying mechanics take a good hit. You lose a lot of the customization in terms of character creation as far as abilities and things to level go in favor for a much more streamlined system. The story in ME2 wasn't nearly as good as ME1 IMO either, but everyone has different opinions on that. Story aside, I don't really care for how they handled the progression of the story either. It felt more sectioned off/level based, especially with those end mission summaries.

ME2 doesn't have any Mako sections either, so there's that. It's replaced by planet probing where you shoot probes at planets and get materials for ship/gear improvements. Personally I liked the Mako sections because of the physics, even if they're wonky. I completely understand why people hate the thing though.

Don't do the side missions then :p

You're not far from the ending, just push through and ignore the side quests if you have to. It's my favourite of the series, but I can understand how some people wouldn't like it.

You'll probably like ME2 better anyway, no driving and tighter shooting.

There's nothing that ME does better than its sequel. It's a terrible unplayable mess you can't pass through. AI, controls, physics, graphics, writing, level design, assets. Today I'd glady rate ME with a 5/10 if I had the chance. The funny thing is that on release date long ago I loved the game, but trying to replay it now in DD on PS3 killed the experience for me. It's really a bad, bad game.

RPG or not. Bad game is a bad game.

Completely disagree, and calling the game an "unplayable mess you can't pass through" is straight up hyperbolic garbage. There's no ifs ands or buts about it. The game is completely playable. Perhaps for you the game is unplayable, but the game by itself is fully functional from start to finish and can be completed.

Yeah, you're near the end so you might as well push through. Mass Effect 2 will dictate if you want to continue with the series.

Listen to this Logz. Mass Effect 2 is different enough to warrant a try. If you're not down with ME2 then there's a good chance you won't like 3 either.

If you focus on the main quest you will be done quickly, you are almost there.

The mako is gone in the sequels. As is most of the exploration.

The writing, at the very least, is much better than in the sequels. ME is the only game of the trilogy with a well done overarching plot.

I never finished it the first either. 2 is a lot easier to get into as they fixed the issues with the first (the mako, elevators) but took a more action route and dropped a lot of the rpg elements.

Depends what you like more IMO, Gears of War esque shooting or more crpg elements.

I'll go back and finish the first one of these days though.

I don't know why but I always liked ME1 the most out of the series.

ME2 has a lot of simplification, and for some it was great, but it kinda turned me off just how far they went.

You will find Mass Effect 2 a lot better - force yourself to finish ME1 - it´s worth it.

I still think ME1 was the best overall package in the series. The shooting is greatly improved in ME2 and 3, but a lot of the RPG elements are lost.

Rush through it, turn the difficulty down, buy a Spectre pistol or whatever, ignore any side quests you have left, and just go to town on the rest of the game. You're past all the really shit parts of the game, and the one part of Mass Effect 1 that actually was definitely, inarguably, legitimately great was the ending (and by 'ending' I mean the last 2-3 hours leading up to the credits).

You'll probably like Mass Effect 2 more, if you find the first game a chore. Personally, contrary to popular opinion, I thought that ME2 retained or expanded on pretty much 100% of the meaningful RPG elements that the first game had, while massively improving the core gameplay, at least up to the level of a halfway decent cover shooter. It's also, for my money, the best-written game in the franchise, and I actually felt that it kind of delivered on the idea of letting you run around in a fairly expansive sci-fi world, whereas ME1 felt kind of cheap, like the video game equivalent of the original Star Trek.

Mass Effect was not "unplayable" for me on the PC but Mass Effect 2 is definitely far more polished and tighter mechanically. I recommend powering through ME1 and then try out ME2.

ME1 - my fav in the series. Completed it 3 times I think. Possibly 4. I def did it once normal. then same char on hardest, then a 3rd time as a femshep.

ME2 - better combat but not as good main story (had good character stories though). Completed it twice. once for story and second to do all side stuff and get best ending. Some things were better but the almost pointless main story and shrinking of the RPGness made it a worse game

ME3 - was Origin only on PC and sounded like a complete mess. Havn't played it yet and possibly wont ever. My interest in it has kind of disappeared. Would still play 1 again on my PC though.

Ok...between this and what the cannibal mod said, I may do just that.

If you're getting bored at the best part of the game, then the franchise probably isn't for you. Do not listen to whoever told you 2 was better, it's garbage.

ME2 is just a Whac-A-Mole game

I think the lack of polish of ME1 is what makes it so good and charming
You constantly envision how much more could have been done

ME2 can't be anything other than what it is

ME2 has some very good music. It's more traditional than ME1 but that doesn't make it any worse. They're both extremely memorable to me.

What the fucking fuck?
This so much. ME2 OST is somewhat inferior to ME1. The only track that is on par is Suicide Mission because of its epicness.

ME2 has basically a forgetable story, few to no RPG elements, annoying planet mining, no exploring, generic corridor shooting and its a total downgrade from what ME was...

The only thing that stood out were the loyalty missions. Its a good game, but man, what it could have been if they just imporoved the idea of ME1... still brings me to tears what EA has done with it...

Man I just wish I could have a greatly written mature Sci-Fi shooter with gameplay akin to Borderlands 2 (cool skill points, lootz)

Does anything like that exist?

ME1 is great and you should finish it but if your not enjoying the first game then it might not be worth playing the rest of the series.

People like to argue over which game is best, and some seem to think that nobody actually likes Mass Effect 2 over the first game and that all who do are part of some not-so-secret paid out journalist circle jerk, but the fact of the matter is for a pretty sizable group of people Mass Effect 2 was a really big deal in a very big way. It's often cited as a favourite.

It's the kind of game that's still distinctly Mass Effect, but also makes a number of sizable changes to the core design and project direction, thus making it different enough to have both fans and detractors. For some it was the beginning of design bastardisation that the series hasn't recovered from. For others it was an objectively superior game to the first and one of their favourites of the generation.

The point is it's doing enough different to warrant a look after playing the first, because by the time you've sunk a good couple of hours into Mass Effect 2 you'll know if you prefer the first, the new direction, or nothing.

Oh...second thoughts coming in. Welp, then I may just finish ME and then find something else in my massive backlog to finish. Perhaps Witcher 2 (couldn't finish part 1).

I like all the games in the series equally for different reasons, but I do think it's disappointing that later games shed so many of the RPG elements. I think they should have made the systems more complex, not less.

For some reason I can't finish Fall Out 3. I should do that at some point soon. I was enjoying it. Is New Vegas really good?

Yes. Lot's of options on how to solve quests. And your choices impact the gameworld.

Witcher 2 is great as well.

Mass Effect 2 is good too. (but it has little//no loot if that's important).

Those 3 are pretty much my favourite recent RPG's.

OK, here´s my personal Story with Mass Effect - good example of how perception can change...

Bought Mass 1 - Hated it, DNF.
For some reason bought Mass 2 - Loved it!

Replayed Mass 1 - Loved it!
Replayed Mass 2 - with all the DLC - Loved it even more!

Bought Mass 3 - Hated it.

Replayed Mass 3 with all the DLC - Hated it less!

I clocked Mass Effect 5 times back to back at launch to get the 1000gs. Absolutely loved every playthrough.

I liked all 3 games, I didn't even grumble at the ending.

I'm playing Mass Effect at the moment too; I've just
fought Matriarch Benezia
and now I'm back on the Normandy. I do know what happens with the plot as I've played the digital comic which comes with ME2 on PS3, but I'm here for the experience and the journey. I do find the combat pretty horrible though - I had to turn the combat difficulty down to easy as I kept dying and just generally find it pretty twitchy and generally unenjoyable. I'm making very slow progress though; not got much time for gaming at the moment and I want to finish Gravity Rush first.

I never played ME1

I got ME2 when it came out on PS3 and really really liked it.

Was excited for ME3 and hated it And not even because the endings sucked, I pretty much hated it from start to finish. The only bit I liked was this:

Mass Effect 2 though... It's like Ocean's 11 meets Farscape meets Armageddon.

I don't even care that most of what happens is fairly irrelevant to the trilogy itself.
