Last comment for a bit.... http://www.threeaonline.com/ needs to make a line of Jaegers. This needs to be done after getting the amazing Metal Gear Solid REX model and soon to get P-Body /Atlas from Portal2.

Who do I have to fornicate with to get this done?
Holy Shit, that Metal Gear Rex is expensive.

They did make at least one Real Steel toy, so I have a hard time believing they won't make Gipsy Danger.

Also, my dad saw the movie last night (While I went to see the Lone Ranger). He thought it was great (9 out of 10) and way better than the marketing presented it.

So any word if this movie has legs?
Hoping it does well, so more movies of this type can be made...
From what I heard, ticket sales dropped on Sunday compared to the expected amount; that's really disheartening. However, IMAX showings are still going strong as are international numbers.

I personally think a sequel is unlikely unless the 2014 Godzilla movie does really well, but this won't be a career destroying bomba for Del Toro.

After me and my buddies left the cinema I suddenly encountered a classmate from high school days. Was always a dork. Anyway, I asked him what he was about to watch and he resonded with Grown Ups 2 -.-. I wasn't surprised. Anyway, really enjoyed PR. I wanna see it again actually. The music was fantastic, the fights were freaking epic.

Red Letter Media reviewed it, they both liked it alot, kind of raved about it actually:
I'm not sure "good" and "very, very good" are raving. :-P

Their points

  • Action is very weighty and clear to see
  • Characters feel stock, arcs feel weirdly developed
  • It's a very positive movie that has little cynicism, emphasis on teamwork
  • They were surprised that they wanted more action, unlike most action movies. Lull in action in middle
  • Lots of neat little details for world-building
  • 12-year olds will love the movie
  • Recommendation from both commentators

I'm going to see this tonight. Is IMAX worth it for this film? Or the standard 3D for that matter
IMAX is worth it. I saw it on a regular screen for my first showing and an IMAX for my second, and wow, the colors look great on the IMAX. That's not even getting into that wonderful sound system.

As someone who's not a huge fan of 3D, I wish they had IMAX 2D showings, but I'll take what I can get. At least the 3D looks decent.

Went to see this today. I don't go to the cinema a lot, but I figured this was a definite cinema film, and it certainly was.

There were only 6 people in there, including me! Thursday afternoon certainly is the time for a quiet film visit.

back from watching pacific rim. I went with three friends. Two ended up liking it a lot, one hated it. He thought it was too unrealistic.

It's a movie about giant robots fighting monsters! Realism was never on the menu.

Anyway, I liked it a lot. But I do wish they had got the Evangelion license, haha.

At least to play "Fly me to the moon" over the credits or so.

I can't stand people who criticize this movie's "realism". It's okay to dislike it, but you can't go into a movie about giant robots and expect to be wowed by realism. The concept of giant human-shaped robots in the first place is ridiculous enough in its own right. From there you just have to suspend your disbelief. I genuinely feel sorry for people who can't do that.

Does Sydney really have the worlds largest IMAX screen?
Am I really seeing these robots and monsters as big as they can possibly be tomorrow?

The only time realism is allowed to be a sore spot is if the characters aren't believable. Maybe sometimes a science thing if it's just totally out of the realm of possibility.

Yea, it's a shame. And he used to be able to do that, but apparently lost his sense for the fantastic.

It's absolutely fine to dislike the film, but with this premise, you simply cannot expect realism.

I agree completely. It has to "feel real", not be realistic. If Han Solo suddenly shoots Chewie dead THAT' is unrealistic. Not the fact that Chewie is a wookie.

I feel like this movie will be the thing to push me into getting the biggest 3D TV I can possibly afford because watching it on anything other than the largest screen available is bullshit.

You're going to drive yourself mad by thinking about all the missed Jaeger exposition opportunities.

At least Cherno and Crimson got to, I dunno, do something.

A cartoon prequel series in the vain of TRON Uprising would be great for letting the Jaegers who got little to no screentime really shine, and it would be really cool if every arc followed a different group of characters (i.e. The first few episodes star Tacit Ronin's pilots, then Coyote Tango's, then an unknown Mark II, then a special about the six years Cherno spent guarding Siberia, then Gipsy's early years, then Crimson, and finally to Striker).

That is there way of saying that they really like it but not love it. There not the type that rave over movies too much in general even leading up to something like The Dark Knight Rises

Most movies they talk about are either a solid "no, don't watch this" a "meh, not bad for the night, I guess" a "We really liked it" or "Watch this now, what are you doing listening to us.

Holy shitballs this movie was awesome! There were moments I had to keep myself in check not to get overly excited and start fist pumping, I was geeking out like crazy.

Brought my girl with me who has hesitant at first (trailer made it seem it was going to be too macho for her), but she was really into it during the movie and told me it was surprisingly good.

I really hope it does well and del toro can expand the universe, there is a lot of potential here.

So I just got back from my IMAX 3D screening of Pacific Rim...

...I don't know what to say. I'm speechless. My brain cannot comprehend the amount of utter excitement and enjoyment it just experienced. I'm already planning on seeing it again, with a possible third showing. I will be buying the Blu-ray [Blu-rays, more than likely, if they offer multiple Special Editions] when they're released, and spread word of Pacific Rim to any/all of the people that I can. I seriously cannot get over how flawless it was. The sense of scale/power in those Jaeger vs. Kaiju fights? It couldn't be better. I had the most ridiculous smile on my face during the whole film.

This movie needs to do well so that I, selfishly, can get a sequel. This movie deserves it.

Long article up on fxguide detailing the visual effects creation:

http://www.fxguide.com/featured/monster-mayhem-pacific-rim/

To help show the detail of the Jaegers and Kaiju, ILM elected to go with Arnold as its primary renderer for the robots and monsters (V-Ray was also used to help achieve environments and RenderMan remained the main renderer for water). Solid Angle founder and CEO Marcos Fajardo helped ILM with the Arnold transition. “Pacific Rim was an incredibly complex project to work on,” he says. “The amount of geometric detail, the amount of texture detail – some of the shaders have 2,000 nodes and it was really difficult to render those shots. We spent some time with ILM on site optimizing the render, seeing what the hot spots were and improving the renderer. As a result, all of our customers will benefit from this optimization. Things like texture threading – very important for Pacific Rim. It was just crazily complex and we just had to double our efforts to optimize rendering for that movie.”

Did my bit, went a second time, took two friends.

It's a really great film. Totally flawed, but absolutely perfect. I'm not mad at all with the people who didn't like it; most of the criticism is completely valid and in fact I agree with it. But the film has such a refreshing lack of cynicism and is imbued throughout with love, and craft. For some of us, that seems to really mean a lot.

Did I already mention how similar it is to Speed Racer in this regard?

Anyway this time I was most struck by the moment where
Mako and Pentecost come face to face for the very fist time.
. On my first watch I was all 'Yeah OK', but this time around I really got how special and deep the moment, and the relationship, between
rescuer and rescuee
really was. This in relation to two admittedly paper-thin characters, but w/evs.

Eh, it was alright. I agree with most of the complaints here, though.

Like, why call it Pacific Rim if 90% of the movie is going to take place in Hong Kong. They should have took the time they wasted on the bloated midsection to properly flesh out the San Francisco and Sydney attacks. The scope just felt too narrow.

So who is buying?

I think the scope was alright. The one true issue it has narrative-wise, and that to be honest is kinda just inherent of this type of movie, is how casual and nonchalant the whole "we get hit by kaijus all the time" thing gets. I get that its explained that Jaegers kick butt and people dont give a fuck cause they always win.. but I cant really just buy that with a TV montage. Every encounter was close to a city and shit was destroyed/assumably people died. I think people kinda would give a fuck..

It's a bit weird. I think the film maybe could have done a better job at explaining city procedures and all, cause it seemed kinda retarded to have people about just going through their routine or whatever and mantain the same city structure as always, with tall-ass buildings and all, if this is a thing that just happens from time to time. Maybe it could explain better if those buildings were abandoned or whatever, but it didnt seem that way.

but yeah, no skyscrapers would make a much more boring film.

Its kind of a given when were talking about the action but ILM did a incredible job as always. The non stop eye candy was putting my corneas at risk.

I think it would be better if they just used Raleigh & Yancy as the base grouped with another team as the main arc(and have a female in somehow),
Stacker gets a few episodes dealing with the time of the first Jaegers.
have team up episodes that focus on the others.
