Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

Everyone keeps saying this about the lead actor, but I've seen the movie three times now and I think he was great in the role. I mean, his character isn't supposed to be anything other than what he portrayed it as, and I honestly didn't have any problems with his acting. In fact, to be truthful, I thought he did a good job. I thought the entire cast did a great job.

I guess I'm just not as critical as most other people are?

In my defense my husband thought he was nothing but awful. I just thought he didn't do very well. Some of the lines he delivered almost made me chuckle, and they weren't supposed to.

Edit: I think I would have preferred to see Jai Courtney in the role, but I appreciate they didn't use a huge, well-known actor.

Yeah, it's not a bomb, but it most likely won't be getting any sequels either. The budget was 190m but after you factor in marketing the costs were quite a bit more. That will all be made back on DVD / BR sales, but I'm sad to say that this is probably the only Pacific Rim movie we will ever be seeing. That sucks, because the idea and universe had so much potential to be a franchise. I'm just so glad we got this one though. It's literally my favorite movie in years, and one I'll be watching the shit out of once I get it home.

I saw it three times and I even dragged a few people to see it, including my mom, so I did my part to make it a success.

Well it doesn't seem like thy spent a ton on marketing this movie, so if anything they saved money in that aspect and could help. Lot of movies have to make 2-3x it's budget to cover the marketing, but this movie obviously didn't have that. WB spent all their money on MOS marketing.

There is also the merchandising and licensing money to be made. They already secured big licensing deals with Sideshow, NECA and such before the movie came out, all bringing in more money. It's not bringing in kid toy like sales, but it's going to be a popular license for more adult geek market toys.

It depresses me how people are not all rushing to see this movie. What's even worse is that when I asked my friends and family why haven't they seen it's because they forgot it existed. This movie has had really shitty marketing.

Awareness is still really low compared to other blockbusters.

Saw it last night and instantly got depressed at seeing two other people in the theater.
More came in but it was still pretty empty.
Needless to say this movie was soooo good.

Why the spoiler tags?

What racial stereotypes were in the movie?

What females needed protecting?

It was just a precaution.

In particular the Russian and Chinese pilots. The Russian characters are these cold hard characters who don't say much, serious people. The Chinese characters are this systematic bunch, all about coordination, serious fuckers, no expression, and hey they probably know martial arts! It was like some USA impression of the world in the 80's, and ends up leaving a bad taste with how little they end up doing. Fake Crocodile Dundee didn't help much.

Mako. Time and time again. It almost made the dojo scene seem like it was shoveled in so she wouldn't be a complete ragdoll.

Can you name one time where he saved her that wasn't
right at the end when he had to give her his oxygen and pushed her out in the pod?

Because that was it.

Seeing this next thursday; IMAX3D. Got in the reservationsystem early so I got the best seats in the house. I expect a crowded house, it's rocking the #1 spot in Holland right now. Despite that, they're only running it for 17 more days :(

"Needs to pay for marketing"

What marketing?!

They already said they expected a lesser opening weekend, and I'm sure they'll be fine. We'll see on the sequel front, but I'm betting the potentially cheaper costs on it would be interesting.

It also seems they weren't really putting too much into this on the merch front, until it exploded. The stuff is coming out next year? Why not now?

Porogise to her, dawg!

How is that an example of him saving her, again?

This is a really weak argument, dude...I can't help but think you're trying to force a narrative that doesn't exist.

this is one of the funnest movies I have seen in years! It reminded me of seeing some of the classics I saw as a child for the first time.

its a fucking shame so many people are dismissing this movie. I have said before in this thread but I have a bunch of friends that see the dumbest shit in theaters but they refuse to give this movie the time of day because A: robots B: nobody famous is in it

If they could have gotten a semi famous actor to play the lead this movie would have done a lot better domestically.

whatever at least we will always have this film. It stands alone and doesn't need a sequel.

I don't buy movies for home viewing but I will be buying the blu-ray for this one.

I watched this yesterday. I knew what kind of movie I was going to see but del Toro managed to surprised me even still. This is what you call a work of love, a work from someone who understands the genre and knows what is doing.
Gipsy Danger might be the hero but, in my opinion, Cherno Alpha, thanks to its crew, have my sword. In fact, the only thing I didn't like the movie, was the few hours that we have to see Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon in action. I know that this was going to make the movie bigger but I think that they deserved more screen time.
For the rest, I've got nothing to say. This is a popcorn movie, but a damn good one.

But he forgot to PULL THE CAMERA BACK! Besides that, I agreed :-)

Saw it Friday. Was a good time. I can imagine absolutely loving this when I was 10. Made me feel that way a little bit. Nabbed the 11x17 Yoji Shinkawa poster off ebay for $5.

Ramin Djawadi's soundtrack is good within the context of the movie, but sounds a little like an Iron Man rehash when separated. His sound seems to work well with Mechs/Tech and promoting their "look at how cool this is" aspects.

while alot of fucking western directors never pull the camera back, i am sure it was because of financial reasons. i still thought it was coherent and added to its kinetic fight scenes

And that's why I'm done with western directors. How is for financial reasons? Hong Kong Cinema, for example, pulls that camera back for their action scenes. Shit, Korean, Indian, Japan and most of Asia does this. Is not that big of a deal, but some fights would have looked very nice due to the settings. Still, a great film.

Great great movie! I can't remember the last time i had such pure fun in a theater... maybe ID4 back in the day! Though this is even better i reckon!

The perfect Summer Blockbuster really...

The Chinese and Russian crews didn't have enough character development to even be considered stereotypes. The Russians are confirmed fans of hair bleaching and bomber jackets while the Chinese seem to enjoy Basketball - none of these things strike me as stereotypes. But hey, they probably know martial arts, right? When you need to start projecting your own stereotypes into a movie it's probably time to take a step back and do something else for a while. The same applies to Mako, who wasn't condescended to once throughout the entire movie - even her overprotective father-figure comes around. I think you're mistaking a female character with some vulnerability for a sexist caricature.

Saw it during the weekend and loved it, but I was disappointing a little bit because I was expecting that at some point of the movie there was going to be a huge event, something like the robots getting wings...

I am spoiled from watching too much Anime though. Also cant believe there werent any Japanese mechs.

All in all it was an amazing movie, I will be so sad if we dont see a sequel.

I have a cup at my desk from Carls Jr. for this movie and right on it is Coyote Tango: Japan along with every other Jaeger from the movie.

weird.

oh.. apparently Coyote Tango
is the Jaeger seen in the memory with Mako?

Welp...you had motherfucking swords so...

If you gave wings to the robots later in the film, some idiot would be asking "why didn't they use the wings at the beggining?".

yes, it is.

As a confession of guilt I found the racial portrayals (and how quickly they're removed) as one of the funny parts to the film, and it's probably intentional as a part of the charm in not taking itself too seriously. Maybe an extended cut will have them given more screentime. The Crimson Typhoon team perform a martial arts type routine when they use the spinning blades.

Mako is close to useless besides doing well in martial arts stuff at the beginning because she's from Eastern Asia, so obviously she has a knack for that kind of thing. Mostly a guinea pig for stronk male and her daddy, has emo problems, can't speak for herself, a martial arts pro sandbagged with the typical useless female potrayal. I would write it out because it's the same gender potrayals we're bombarded with for most of our lives.

Spoilers inbound.

1: She beats Raleigh in their test fight. Also, I'm going out on a limb and assuming possibly decades of training with Stacker > Being born in fucking Japan

2: Every single main character has enough problems/secrets. The reason she had such issues with it on the test run was because it was her first run, and Raleigh fucked it up first, throwing her off balance.

3: She speaks for herself just fine, but she's more choosy about it and prefers the path of least resistance. Raleigh is a headstrong doofus. And Stacker isn't his dad.

4: Yeah, there is that whole sword thing where she slices a sonofabitch in half...

Unspoilers.

It really seems like you're projecting. There's naturally character issues, but I don't get it, especially from Mako. Raleigh and the Aussies definitely have them, though.

Pretty much. There's only so much you can say to such people - refute one assertion and they'll come up with another.

"Mako's weak and useless"

"She beats the shit out of Raleigh, though..."

"Oh, so she's good at martial arts. Because she's Asian, right?"

It's a losing battle. Sometimes you just have to accept that some people didn't care for the movie. Why those same people would want to take an active role in disparaging the movie online I cannot say, but most of them supported the movie with the cost of their tickets so I suppose it's their right.

I didn't really see any glaring flaws with Raleigh, but Chuck was certainly a douche just for douchiness sake.

Don't really like this line of thinking, even if you begrudgingly come to the conclusion they have a right to do it.

Are OTs reserved only for wankfests or are they for discussion?

No but I think the point is that the conversation becomes counter productive where the conversation just keeps going in circles instead of there being a chance to develop some closure about a movies particular issues.

I feel Mako has much better potential for being an agreeable MC, and that's why I would would've had her as my MC.

My problem with her potrayal mostly comes from her contrast to Raleigh, being the buff male who barks but gets things done, albeit with testosterone. My problems do stem from the other characters being shit if I can agree with that, but Raleigh is the MC we're supposed to love, and my mind works from there with Mako paling in comparison on the whole 'lack of fortitude' problem.

It would have been great if we were shown her training actually, that would be another change I would make, as a backstory it's possible it was covered. I recall reading there was a dictionary-sized book detailing stuff, I would rather see it of course.

Right now, I try to imagine what young kids going to see this as it is are going to take away from the divide between how the two come across, "This is what it means to be a man!", and then you have Mako.

I'm fine if it's all just me, they were short changes I would've made if I became GDT for a day.

EDIT: I'll take my leave.

At the end of the day, Raleigh and Mako were a team, and I wouldn't imagine any girl seeing this movie would view Mako as a subservient woman to Raleigh. She's respectful, smart, capable, loyal...and her only weakness in the movie is that she's a new Jaegar pilot...a trait that is easily genderless.

Her only obviously girly features in the movie is that she's like a giddy little girl coo'ing over Raleigh in a bunch of scenes...but being attracted to someone isn't something that I'd chalk up to weakness either...but perhaps they were a bit over-the-top in displaying that part of her character.

I guess in my mind she was just a flawed character, like all good characters are.

Exactly this, NECA has had to greenlight a 2nd production run of the Series 1 figures and rush Series 2 into production to keep up with demand. Sideshow has a whole line of statues coming out

The cut WB and Legendary will make from those and the home video is MUCH larger than the cut they get from the box office. If the International take is even remotely good overseas you will see a sequel.

The only way we do not get a lower budget sequel is if it completely tanks in China and Japan, those two countries have an affinity for this genre so if it tanks there then yeah rule it out but otherwise licensing will do what the US Box office does not

My comment wasn't discouraging posters with dissenting opinions from sharing them - I was just wondering aloud why they would choose to linger on an experience that obviously didn't enjoy. If I were forced to see Grown Ups 2 in theaters I'd have probably left the theater early and never said another word about it, but that's just me.

Saw the movie yesterday on a whim with a buddy (had no intention of seeing it otherwise) and found it generally annoying. I thought the concept was cool, and it started off really interesting, and I loved some of the monster designs, CGI, costumes, and set design, but Christ was the writing PUTRID. Some of the most predictable, hilariously cliched nonsense I've listened to in a long time. During any contrived "emotional" sequence the audience would burst into scattered laughter. The acting overall was really hit-and-miss, and I honestly did not care about any of the characters.

And if you're going to have long, extended fight scenes, at least have the balls to fucking show the fight scenes rather than jump around with quick-cuts and edits. Movie has so much shit going on during the big battles that it's hard to really appreciate the artwork and design that went into the monsters, robots, city, etc. because of the stupid fucking quick-cut, shaky cam editing.

My friend too hated the cinematography and found it hard to tell what was going on in battles.

With you included, that makes two people I've heard with this complaint.

Which is pretty weird, because I've seen it three times now, and I found it to be the complete opposite. As complaints, I would say there are a lot of close ups (which is stylistic choice to avoid making the robots/monsters look like miniatures, plus showing off details) and dim lighting and particles obscuring the scene, especially the final battle, but "quick cuts and shaky cam"? Not even in the Sydney news footage (where movies usually abuse that) is it present. Heck, due to the weight of the movements, especially punches, the shot takes its time following all the action which would make it feel slow for people used to other action movies that abuse quick cuts.

Or do they mean the action inside the Jaegers? Like I said, weird complaint.

I'll say that if you sit close to a gigantic IMAX screen...EVERYTHING is hard to follow.

Going tonight to see it in IMAX with my sister. She's really depressed, so I figured I'd take her to a movie to get her mind off of things.

This will be showing #2 for me, with showing #3 scheduled for next weekend [IMAX again]. That will be $60 [$80, including the ticket for my sister] that I will be contributing to this movie.

I regret nothing!

Chrono, Did any of you in Canada get the posters from me yet?

Which is pretty weird, because I've seen it three times now, and I found it to be the complete opposite.

That's what I was getting at. In fact, one of the most frequent compliments I've heard of the film, from those who've seen it, is how easy it was to follow the action and well framed the encounters were. Compared to something like Transformers, where the common complaint is "I have no idea what the fuck is going on".

I've seen it once at IMAX in 3D, then 2D on a smaller (though still quite large) screen, and found the action wonderfully shot on both occasions. I attribute a lot of my enjoyment to this fact.

I'll say that if you sit close to a gigantic IMAX screen...EVERYTHING is hard to follow.

The first time my gf and I saw it we were fairly close to a big screen. The second time we sat back quite a bit, and I admit we enjoyed it more because it was easier to see and encompass everything that was going on.

Actually, I loved the movie but if I had one complaint it would be that the fights were very busy at times. Not so much with the robots and monsters themselves, but with all the stuff flying around them. Buildings falling down and all over them, rain constantly falling, water splashing all over. I would have loved to see more of the Stryker fight on TV simply because it was during a sunny blue sky day and not in the water. Still, it was less busy and confusing than Transformers at least, I was glad for that.

I think alot of the fight scenes were closer than most people would like but I feel they did it because it's less to render, I had an easier time following the fights then in Transformers movies but I do wish the screen was bigger and or the camera was pulled out a bit more. The movie was a bit cheesy and I agree with the main actor coming off as "overacting a bit" but the universe was cool enough to pull me in and it was a fun movie, good summer flick and the closest I've seen to anime in a long time.

I just want to add the Jaeger designs were awesome, I felt like a fanboy watching them do battle I was getting so hyped. The chest turbine on Gypsy Danger in particular I couldn't wait to see it used and they didn't disappoint.

There's more detail to be shown if it's up close. GDT said the reason why he kept the camera close was to portray just how big these machines and monsters really were, filming them far off would have diminished the scale and made them look normal sized. The fight scenes are well shot imo and best of all they don't have the shaky cam so you can see things. I couldn't see shit in Robot vs Robot fights in Transformers because of just how shaky it was and how fast everything moved.

True, as I said above, it was way better than Transformers. The sense of scale was amazing.

According to Google Maps, the nearest IMAX to me is about 2 hours away.

And is the only one in the country.
