striker eureka looks like a giant spartan II wearing one of the older armors.
Everyone keeps saying this about the lead actor, but I've seen the movie three times now and I think he was great in the role. I mean, his character isn't supposed to be anything other than what he portrayed it as, and I honestly didn't have any problems with his acting. In fact, to be truthful, I thought he did a good job. I thought the entire cast did a great job.
I guess I'm just not as critical as most other people are?
Yeah, it's not a bomb, but it most likely won't be getting any sequels either. The budget was 190m but after you factor in marketing the costs were quite a bit more. That will all be made back on DVD / BR sales, but I'm sad to say that this is probably the only Pacific Rim movie we will ever be seeing. That sucks, because the idea and universe had so much potential to be a franchise. I'm just so glad we got this one though. It's literally my favorite movie in years, and one I'll be watching the shit out of once I get it home.
I saw it three times and I even dragged a few people to see it, including my mom, so I did my part to make it a success.
It depresses me how people are not all rushing to see this movie. What's even worse is that when I asked my friends and family why haven't they seen it's because they forgot it existed. This movie has had really shitty marketing.
Why the spoiler tags?
What racial stereotypes were in the movie?
What females needed protecting?
Mako. Time and time again. It almost made the dojo scene seem like it was shoveled in so she wouldn't be a complete ragdoll.
Can you name one time where he saved her that wasn'tright at the end when he had to give her his oxygen and pushed her out in the pod?
Because that was it.
Porogise to her, dawg!
I watched this yesterday. I knew what kind of movie I was going to see but del Toro managed to surprised me even still. This is what you call a work of love, a work from someone who understands the genre and knows what is doing.
But he forgot to PULL THE CAMERA BACK! Besides that, I agreed![]()
while alot of fucking western directors never pull the camera back, i am sure it was because of financial reasons. i still thought it was coherent and added to its kinetic fight scenes
It was just a precaution.
In particular the Russian and Chinese pilots. The Russian characters are these cold hard characters who don't say much, serious people. The Chinese characters are this systematic bunch, all about coordination, serious fuckers, no expression, and hey they probably know martial arts! It was like some USA impression of the world in the 80's, and ends up leaving a bad taste with how little they end up doing. Fake Crocodile Dundee didn't help much.

I am spoiled from watching too much Anime though. Also cant believe there werent any Japanese mechs.
Welp...you had motherfucking swords so...Saw it during the weekend and loved it, but I was disappointing a little bit because I was expecting that at some point of the movie there was going to be a huge event, something like the robots getting wings...
yes, it is.oh.. apparently Coyote Tangois the Jaeger seen in the memory with Mako?
The Chinese and Russian crews didn't have enough character development to even be considered stereotypes. The Russians are confirmed fans of hair bleaching and bomber jackets while the Chinese seem to enjoy Basketball - none of these things strike me as stereotypes. But hey, they probably know martial arts, right? When you need to start projecting your own stereotypes into a movie it's probably time to take a step back and do something else for a while. The same applies to Mako, who wasn't condescended to once throughout the entire movie - even her overprotective father-figure comes around. I think you're mistaking a female character with some vulnerability for a sexist caricature.
Mako is close to useless besides doing well in martial arts stuff at the beginning because she's from Eastern Asia, so obviously she has a knack for that kind of thing. Mostly a guinea pig for stronk male and her daddy, has emo problems, can't speak for herself, a martial arts pro sandbagged with the typical useless female potrayal. I would write it out because it's the same gender potrayals we're bombarded with for most of our lives.
Pretty much. There's only so much you can say to such people - refute one assertion and they'll come up with another. It really seems like you're projecting. There's naturally character issues, but I don't get it, especially from Mako. Raleigh and the Aussies definitely have them, though.
It's a losing battle. Sometimes you just have to accept that some people didn't care for the movie. Why those same people would want to take an active role in disparaging the movie online I cannot say, but most of them supported the movie with the cost of their tickets so I suppose it's their right.
Don't really like this line of thinking, even if you begrudgingly come to the conclusion they have a right to do it.
Are OTs reserved only for wankfests or are they for discussion?
Spoilers inbound.
1: She beats Raleigh in their test fight. Also, I'm going out on a limb and assuming possibly decades of training with Stacker > Being born in fucking Japan
2: Every single main character has enough problems/secrets. The reason she had such issues with it on the test run was because it was her first run, and Raleigh fucked it up first, throwing her off balance.
3: She speaks for herself just fine, but she's more choosy about it and prefers the path of least resistance. Raleigh is a headstrong doofus. And Stacker isn't his dad.
4: Yeah, there is that whole sword thing where she slices a sonofabitch in half...
Unspoilers.

Right now, I try to imagine what young kids going to see this as it is are going to take away from the divide between how the two come across, "This is what it means to be a man!", and then you have Mako.
I'm fine if it's all just me, they were short changes I would've made if I became GDT for a day.
There is also the merchandising and licensing money to be made. They already secured big licensing deals with Sideshow, NECA and such before the movie came out, all bringing in more money. It's not bringing in kid toy like sales, but it's going to be a popular license for more adult geek market toys.

Movie has so much shit going on during the big battles that it's hard to really appreciate the artwork and design that went into the monsters, robots, city, etc. because of the stupid fucking quick-cut cinematography.
With you included, that makes two people I've heard with this complaint.
Going tonight to see it in IMAX with my sister. She's really depressed, so I figured I'd take her to a movie to get her mind off of things.
This will be showing #2 for me, with showing #3 scheduled for next weekend [IMAX again]. That will be $60 [$80, including the ticket for my sister] that I will be contributing to this movie.
I regret nothing!
Which is pretty weird, because I've seen it three times now, and I found it to be the complete opposite.
I'll say that if you sit close to a gigantic IMAX screen...EVERYTHING is hard to follow.
I think alot of the fight scenes were closer than most people would like but I feel they did it because it's less to render, I had an easier time following the fights then in Transformers movies but I do wish the screen was bigger and or the camera was pulled out a bit more. The movie was a bit cheesy and I agree with the main actor coming off as "overacting a bit" but the universe was cool enough to pull me in and it was a fun movie, good summer flick and the closest I've seen to anime in a long time.
There's more detail to be shown if it's up close. GDT said the reason why he kept the camera close was to portray just how big these machines and monsters really were, filming them far off would have diminished the scale and made them look normal sized. The fight scenes are well shot imo and best of all they don't have the shaky cam so you can see things. I couldn't see shit in Robot vs Robot fights in Transformers because of just how shaky it was and how fast everything moved.
