Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

Saw it in IMAX 3D and my gawd the visuals. This 3D totally delivers. The visual effects were a feast too. Everything had great scale, texture, and presence on screen. I totally expected bad acting from the main actor and cheesiness throughout the whole movie so it didn't bother me too much. Flawed but fun movie.

My favorite scene was
when Mako had that flashback of her as a kid running away from the Kaiju. It was genuinely a terrifying scene.

Damnit, we didn't stay for end credits. I have to catch it online somewhere now.

Just saw this last night, it was FUCKING AWESOME!! I saw it on a normal/small screen in 3d at my local theater but I want to go see it in IMAX ASAP.

This movie is fantastic!!!, a sing of the apocalypse and bad marketing is that Grown Ups 2 made more money than this. The best imagery that I´ve witnessed in IMAX 3D ever.

not to say the movie would be better or worst, but yeah this is probably the most franchiseable movie since... idk. Power rangers is making a big comeback these years, so put some commercials of this film around there. Partner with mcdonalds happy meals. Get Bandai or someone to churn out action figures.

my favourite part was where at the end one of the characters accused another one of the characters of being a one-dimensional cardboard cutout

Film was pretty good, fights were immense but the lack of solid characters really knocked this back. Every character bar maybe Elba's and Rei were dull as bricks, especially Charlie Hunhams. Guy can't act outside SOA let alone carry a movie.

I loved how colorful it was.

This movie did nothing for me and I was really hyped to see it. I came in expecting to see big mechs punching monsters but what I got was 2 hours of cheesy dialogue and bad acting. I understand the movie is MEANT to be cheesy, but it was too much for me. The movie takes itself way too seriously and it just drains the fun away. Also, it was really disappointing that the other mechs just
get killed off so quickly, after so much hype they are just cannon fodder
.

Maybe I'll watch it again when it comes out to DVD/Blu-Ray but I haven't been so disappointed with a movie in a while.

Eh?
Everyone's at the very least acknowledging that the movie was light hearted and GDT even said he wanted to make it light hearted, this is the first time I'm looking at someone say otherwise for this movie.

Just got back from seeing it for the first time, was also my first IMAX movie, thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was, loud, predictable, and cheesy. Took my nephews and my dad and they all enjoyed it as well. I'd be up for a sequel that's about an hour and a half long of just fighting because why not?

Also some family brought their damn baby to the movie, was crying or making noises all the damn time. Seriously what the fuck is wrong with people.

Criticisms of the film:
-The CG was so obvious in the scene with Charllie Day in the
black market place
, specifically the
Kaiju fingernail
or whatever which looked too much like a texture.
-The trailers, most of which I luckily managed to forget and/or avoid watching, give everything away. If you know somebody who hasn't seen anything, get them in the theater without seeing any trailers. My friend was spoiled on the hypest part where the
Kaiju flew Gipsy Danger out of the atmosphere
, while I was saying "What the fuc*!?"
-Whoever wrote the dialogue needs to go back to screenwriting school. Or is it a problem with the actors that they sound like cartoon characters?
-3D was whatever. Occasionally there were some depth differences, but overall it didn't matter. Jurassic Park 3D was an awesome converted 3D film, while this was typical for a conversion. We did see it in regular Real 3D, so maybe the IMAX is better.

Other than that, it's the best new movie I've seen in forever. I didn't even have a problem with the robots, which all looked awesome and pretty realistic. And the Kaiju were great. So much fun all around for the whole family. It's a wonderful film!

Saw the movie opening night in 2D and had a blast. Going back tonight for LieMAX 3D. Mainly because the 2D and standard 3D showings were too early for my wife to make it. The LieMAX 3D glasses hurt my head after a while, but I dont care.

Also, my wife was the one most anxious to see it again. She loved it more than I did. Curious if this will be like Star Trek Into Darkness for me. I really liked it the first time, but LOVED it the second time.

I'm happy to forgive stupid dialogue and horrible accents I suppose, but the structure of the film was the biggest problem:

1. Opening battle which was an epic teaser
2. An hour of dialogue in a warehouse
3. The most epic battle of the film and then immediately...
4. The least epic battle of the film

I really thought the Charlie Day story was telegraphing
interfacing with and then controlling a live Kaiju, which they would then use to deliver the bomb.
If this is what actually happened then you could have:

1. Opening battle
2. Half hour of dialogue with the science guys
3. Attempt (and fail) the original mission to blow up the breach, losing two Jaegar in the process
4. Half hour back in HK to learn of the new plan to catch and ride a live Kaiju
5. Battle the 2 Kaiju in HK, catch one alive and then ride it into the breach

Just saw this. I dunno, I thought it was decent. The fight scenes were fairly cool and whatnot, but I didn't really get engrossed by it. Once the spectacle wears off there isn't really much there. And I find the comments of 'non-stop action' interesting, it seemed like a significant portion of the film was dedicated to trying to develop pretty lame characters.
Random thoughts:
-Ron Perlman was quite good, only actor that I felt really nailed their role. His death was also great.
-Idris Elba was pretty good, but nothing amazing. I feel like these types of roles don't suit him that well, felt the same with Prometheus. Wish he'd do more serious drama roles. Charlie Day was fairly funny but also not too memorable.
-Liked the beginning where the brother is ripped out of the Jaeger
-Funny that the Australian father didn't seem too upset over his son dying. I guess the son was a douche anyway.
-Ending seemed odd. Not even a kiss? After you both nearly died? Okay then.

There is a BIG lull in action in the film. I think the scale of the Hong Kong sequence is what is setting it apart for some people.

Yeah, after all the hype about it never letting up, I found myself thinking "what's going on" during the warehouse scenes. I mean if I found the characters interesting, or if the acting was good, I wouldn't mind, but...
I was similarly surprised that Charlie Day's character received such a large amount of screen time and focus.

I was the same way. I was about to turn to my wife during the first viewing and whisper "This is really dragging." But then the kaiju alarm went off, and the Hong Kong battle kicked off. And all was forgiven.

Would have been great if they inserted a simulator scene with Mako or if they extended the fight between Coyote Tango and that crab kaiju (Onibaba). Budget may have been too tight for another big CGI fight though.

#PacificRim finishes #6 in Domestic gross this weekend at just under $16 million http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/

#PacificRim has been a monster overseas, however. Total box office is over $178 million (budget was $190 mill)

#PacificRim is killing it around the world. $110 mil in foreign box office with China, Spain, Brazil and Japan releases coming up.

#PacificRim should be in the black by next weekend - fingers crossed for #PacificRim2

Apocalypse canceled!

They should have had a scene of Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon completely destroying a Category 4 Kaiju as Raleigh's helicopter entered Hong Kong. Would have been a great introduction to the two.

-Ending seemed odd. Not even a kiss? After you both nearly died? Okay then.
I appreciated them not going the typical movie B-plot romance route. It is up to the viewer to decide if Mako and Raleigh are just friends who respect each other or are romantically interested. Subverting the kiss at the end really worked for me.

Eh, I can see where you're coming from and I appreciate that. It just seemed a little odd to me considering the rest of the plot was pretty typical generic action movie stuff. It didn't really affect me one way or another, just something I noticed.

GDT says
he filmed 4 endings
. I guess we'll see them when the Blu-ray is released.

I'm sure this has been addressed,
but how did the main character not know Idris Elba was sick when Mako seemed to know and they had merged minds by then?

Also, I enjoyed it overall but yeah the characters were weak. It seemed like the screenwriter came right out of writing class and took the "give every character a unique personality trait" advice that you get in writing 101 to heart. This guy has a dog! This guy wears a bowtie! This guy has a cane!

Funny enough I appreciated that more than most things in the film.
It's not a stereotypical romance. They don't become boy and girlfriend - they've already been inside one another's heads. It's more that they feel deep gratitude for having each other for support at the end.

There's a video on fxguide detailing some of the ILM VFX pipeline for the film:

http://www.fxguide.com/fxguidetv/fxguidetv-175-pacific-rim-pipeline-special/

Vid is over 30 min! Haven't watched it fully yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were spoilers for those who haven't seen it yet.

Looks like PacRim took over 500 TB of disk space. Some shots took a couple of weeks to render out completely.

This vid is also up on Youtube:

Whats the name of the song that plays when Gipsy drags the tanker, they played it before in the film as well.

Edit: its the main theme. Derp

Saw it in 3D. Really enjoyed it. A great reason to visit the cinema. Acting was laughable at times but I went in expecting that. Literally said "Oh shit!" during the opening scene.

No way around it, the subject matter is inherently cheesy. That said, I could have done without all the unnecessary gags like the kid finding a little toy robot then finding a GIANT ROBOT or that stupid desk toy with the metal balls getting set in motion.

Criticisms of the film:
-Whoever wrote the dialogue needs to go back to screenwriting school. Or is it a problem with the actors that they sound like cartoon characters?

This is what del Toro was going for. As a result I thought the dialog was perfect in its cheese.

From what I can tell, the Drift only really shows flashes of memories. You don't look more deeply because if you do, you "follow the rabbit" and get distracted as you explore the memory.

looks like someone didn't watch the mid credits scene...

regarding your 2nd point,
she already said she loves stacker (idris elba) when he was about to die, it's the part where it's not being subbed if you watched the subbed version
also she's japanese, people are timid over there
tbh i also expected a mouth to mouth scene also at that point, but i thought it's interesting how they didn't go for it

Eh?
Wasn't Stacker her adoptive father?
