20 Years LttP: Twin Peaks

I will say it is a bit jarring in S2. I think season 2 does have a different tone which is kind of weird since there is really no time difference between season 1 and 2. I didn't mind it too much, but I too think they took season 2 a bit farther than was necessary. A problem I have with the entire season 2 of the show is that they clearly said "Okay, people like the weird. Let's give a lot more of it!" when that's not really the answer. I still like the first half of season 2 a lot and TP is probably my favorite show ever, but I do have my problems with even the "good half" of season 2.

Lynch basically left production to finish up "Wild at Heart"...The problem with that was twofold. For one, he bowed to pressure from ABC to reveal the killer...something he probably NEVER wanted to do. Secondly, he didn't leave behind a clear path and agreed to a 21 (?) episode season with guest directors that had full reins to do what they wanted...I'm looking at your Diane Keaton.

In the end, it really was his fault for that uneven season...at least they brought it back together in the end...The final episode is some of the best TV I've ever seen.

I think they mistook goofiness for weirdness.

I just started watching this the other day. I was about 10 years old when it aired so I obviously didn't watch it at the time.

I find it entertaining and like the weird characterizations, but there is some really horrible acting in this show (well to be fair I'm only talking about the guy who plays Leo - worst line reads I've ever heard). The music cues are also reused so much that it becomes distracting, but the scripting is good and it's entertaining. Very much a show of the time though.

Pretty sure Eric Da Re is the son of Lynch's casting director.

Make of that what you will.

So I finished watching Twin Peaks today, closing things off with the movie. I'm feeling like writing a lengthy post with my impressions but I said the same thing with Doctor Who and I never ended up doing it for that so here's something shorter and hastily written instead. My impressions are never interesting either way.
I'll probably bring up some random questions here, I hope somebody answers them!

I'll spoiler the whole thing because there seem to be a few people are who're still watching. It'll probably not be needed for most parts but whatever

I'm not sure why I finally decided to watch this show. I had already heard of it and how good it is supposed to be, but it never really was on my radar until a while ago. I have certainly been noticing more buzz around it lately, not sure why. Was it because of those revival rumours? I think that was recently, right? I didn't follow that at all, but I'm going to that it was all bullshit. By the way, I know a few Twin Peaks fans and I have always been told about how scary this show is. I have never liked scary things which probably is one of the reasons why I didn't watch it earlier, but it wasn't scary nor horror. Not sure why people would say it is.*

Season 1 was brilliant of course. I don't have much else to say about it. Is it possible to not love Cooper? I assumed that the entirety of Season 2 but the end would be bad from what I had heard about it, but everything up until the reveal of Laura's killer is some good stuff. People still liked that part right? Or do they consider it to be part of Season 1? That would certainly make more sense story arc-wise and it also divides the amount of episodes more nicely, so I definitely I would agree with it if that's a thing people do. *

*Then again the impressions I have heard are mostly limited to the three Twin Peaks fans I know personally and a blogger.

By the way again, I sort of guessed the identity of the killer far before the actual reveal. Am I just weird like that or is this something that was painfully obvious to everyone? I'm going to guess it's the former considering that they were forced to reveal the whole thing prematurely. I wasn't very bothered by that however, I never viewed Twin Peaks as a murder mystery when watching it. It's when the story changes directions that the quality takes a noticeable dip. And this isn't because it does, but because it's all very boring. Now don't get me wrong. It never got truly bad. There was still some enjoyable stuff going. It just wasn't very interesting. And I'll second the notion that the tone was all wrong. It did start picking up again in the end however and boy it sure went out with a bang.

I took a little break after that and then watched FWWM. I went in with very low expectations. Everything I had heard about it made it sound like it was one of the worst movies ever. It wasn't. The movie was a very interesting experience and I'd even go as far as calling it great. It certainly wasn't an enjoyable experience and I suppose that's what people were expecting from a Twin Peaks movie. That would be a weird expectation though, considering that it's a prequel about Laura Palmer. So yeah, the movie made me feel like crap. I didn't like it as much as the series's highs however.

Overall I'm very glad I watched this little thing. It had its worse moments but that's okay. It was brilliant when it needed to be and it's probably one of my favorite things ever now.
So yes, Twin Peaks is some damn good coffee. And now I'm thirsty for more. :(

And I see this still ended up being longer than I thought it would. And just as boring. Oh well!

(James and Bobby are the worst by the way.)

I don't get the whole 'it's good up until the killer reveal' mindset.

The two episodes *after* the reveal were two of my favourites. The scene where Leland is lying on the floor of the cell talking about his life was the scene I've found most affecting in the whole thing, so far.

The problem episodes are ones where they become weird for the sake of it...I mentioned it earlier but the Diane Keaton episode is often listed as the worst offender.

More Twin Peaks art.

Blu-Ray coming.

Speaking of which, work on Twin Peaks: The Complete Series on Blu-ray is also well under way at CBS, with a release expected in time for the end of the year or early next. Multiple sources tell us that a deal has been made to allow the inclusion of David Lynch’s Fire Walk with Me film in the package, so fan will at long last be treated to a truly complete set.

So is Fire Walk With Me worth watching?

I thought it was boring and didn't really bring anything new (or very little) story wise. If you exclude first 20 minutes or so, it also lacks the charm of Twin Peaks TV series. You can still watch it, but be aware that the movie is very different than the show, more darker and violent. And since it focuses on Laura and her father, every other character is pushed aside (some only appear for like few minutes, some don't appear at all).

Also, they changed the actress that played Donna. >:|

Fuuuuuck.

The end of Season 2 Ep. 1 was pretty chilling I'm not sure I want to continue.

Season 1 was so damn good but I just don't know...

Don't know if this is the right place since this thread is barely hanging on but I just finished it all and wow. The part in the ending
where Laura is screaming at the camera in the black lodge
really freaked me out. As others have stated I'm both frustrated in the dip in quality and the fact that it's over but that was quite the journey. I would love to watch FWWM but I can't find it streaming on Netflix. Does any other site have it up?

Also :unpopular opinion ahead: Sheryl Lee > Sherilynn Fenn

So I just watched all of Twin Peaks too...and I'm PISSED :(

THAT's where you're gonna leave it off? A pretty great finale, but it breaks my heart they're never going to continue that amazing and bullshit cliffhanger.

And the movie's not even on Netflix! :(

Maybe. 25 years later (March next year), they'll release the Blu-Ray with seasons 1 and 2, plus the movie. And maybe, just maybe... season 3 is announced? Because of this.

Don't be sad that it's over. Be glad that it happened.

Ok I got to ask. I' have been wanting to watch this because everyone swears by it. I'm 5 minutes in and it's so cheesy and the acting is horrible. Is this part of it? Or does it not hold up currently? The first 5 minutes is a girl describing which phone she's forwarding a call too. So weird

Have you seen anything else by David Lynch? (honest question, not trying to be snarky)

More or less yes, it's likely that what you're describing is intentional. Part of it is mood-setting (it's a slow town), part of it is just Lynch's quirky weirdness.

The show definitely gets better and I feel like you just don't really know what to expect. The show is bonkers in every aspect. The fact that you didn't like Lucy though, even in the pilot, is worrying, though.

I hate telling people this, but you really need to watch at least 5 episodes to really know what kind of a show Twin Peaks is.

I felt the same as you, the cheesiness never stops so just get used to it. A lot of people here will say it's the best damn show ever, I disagree. It's good, especially the first season and a good amount of the second and then it just gets stupid. But, it's not aged terribly well and most modern shows would easily top it. Still, Cooper is awesome and as long as you don't mind the supernatural stuff that comes into play you're in for a good ride.

Yep, it's part of the charm. The cheesiness and weirdness will feel jarring at first, but you will quickly get used to it. Or not. Just keep watching for one or two more episodes and then decide whether you want to see more or not.

i have mulholland drive on dvd, but never got around to watching it.
