I enjoyed my second time more than the first.

Audiences help sometimes.
However, my audience last night sucked. It was basically a dude bro audience. Thankfully they were all at the back of the theater while my wife and I were at the front.

Of the three times I went to go see it, only one had an enthusiastic audience (albeit it was comprised of only 8 people due to the showing being both in IMAX and at 10:30 PM on a Sunday night). A guy and his girlfriend both had mecha shirts (Evangelion and Gurren Lagann (AKA the best mecha anime)), and they both shouted out "YES!" in unison upon the reveal of the boatsword, as well freaking out after Mako's
"FOR MY FAMILY!"
Still, the fact that I got to see it in IMAX twice is a fair trade for not having lively audiences, I suppose.
This totally reminded me of when I watched it in Hawaii while on vacation last week. In my row was what had to be a 65+ year old Japanese lady, by herself. This was the 3D IMAX version too. She obviously knew what the definitive viewing experience for this movie would be! Watching it again this weekend with my brother, nephews and bro-in-law who have not seen it yet. Can't wait to see their reactions.

Finally saw it this afternoon. Overall liked the movie - I love It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, so I was practically giddy with amusement every time Newt was on screen - but I honestly felt like it wasn't sure whether it wanted to be an over-the-top robot movie or a serious movie about war, and ended up kinda sandwiched right in the middle.
Still, definitely enjoyable. Would recommend to other mecha fans. Just wish the robots had a bit more varied arsenals. Too much punching, not enough chest lasers.

Opening night was in 2D. The theater had it in one of their smallest auditoriums, but one where they seem to crank the sound to compensate for the smaller screen.
Last night was in their LieMAX 3D auditorium. It was the only showtime that my wife and I could both get to (she was more adamant about seeing it again than I. I was content to wait for blu ray for it. She was itching to see it again). We went in about fifteen minutes before showtime (thank you assigned seating! I can hit the bar at the theater first and go in at the last minute), and there were about as many people there s opening night (maybe 20 total). A few minutes before the showtime started, I went to the bathroom and to get popcorn. When I was in the bathroom, there were about three dudebros in there just talking and acting "cool" the whole time. I knew they were there for Pacific Rim because of the IMAX glasses on their heads. They come in with their drinks and refreshments. "Dude, where the fuck am I supposed to put this while I piss?" One of them yells out.
"Dude, I don't know. Just set it down!" Another yells as he uses the urinal next to mine. I try to hide my annoyed face.
"Man, they should put popcorn holders in the bathrooms. What the fuck am I supposed to do with it while I piss?" Oh, I don't know. Maybe use the bathroom before you buy refreshments? Maybe get your seat, ask a friend to watch your stuff while you use the bathroom?
Anyways, after I finish and the dudebros finish their deep philosophizing about what to do with refreshments while using the bathroom before the movie, I go and get popcorn and a drink then go back and take my seat. I chose the seats on the front row of the stadium area of the LieMAX(in this smaller auditorium, it is close enough to fill your field of vision, but not so much that you have to look around so much), and there are only two other people in the row with me and my wife, and they are at the other end of the aisle. I look up and see nearly everyone else is in the top two rows of the theater. I sit down and tell my wife that I am glad everyone else is about ten rows back, and then explain the deep conversation some of them had in the restroom.
The previews start. Anytime a new trailer starts, Dudebro Collective at the back yells "WHOO!". Ugh. And then, when the IMAX PR stuff ("Theater optimized!" or whatever) starts, they scream louder "WHOO!!!!!" I cringe and contort in my seat. I only really run into people like this a bit into a film's theatrical run. Opening night is almost always people that are well behaved and respectful. Mainly because the majority of the audience is made up of people that would cut anyone who talks or acts like an ass during the movie.
But anyways, when the movie played, I never heard a sound from the dudebros. Either they were too caught up in the film, too drunk, or the sound was so loud it drowned out any reaction from them.

I did not mention the jeans hanging a bit low, or the tanktops to show off their sweet arms. Nor the backwards baseball caps they were all wearing.

Wow. Were they baseball caps or snapbacks (flat-brimmed dirtbag hats)? I wear baseball caps (peak facing forward, of course) all the time, but I think snapbacks look incredibly dumb, especially when worn backwards/sideways and with the sticker still on it.

Audience in my second viewing would have been fine.... if not for the baby who cried several times throughout the movie. Luckily the volume was very high so you could really only hear the crying during quiet scenes.
I felt bad for the baby too, spending two hours in a dark loud theater with no clue of what's going on must not be very pleasant :/

Totally want to make a PR game based on King of the Monsters.
I think this is a pretty good read of the movie, but the fact that none of that jumped out at me when I was actually watching the movie (well except about the stuff about the Kaidenovskys) is a significant problem.

I'm in this boat as well. The middle still dragged on but the people i went with weren't annoying me this time and i think that helped a lot. Still SO disappointed we didn't get to see more of the other bots. The russian and chinese robots both looked awesome and completely different to the other 2 shame we didn't get to see them in action for lone
I've always had a love of monster films, ever since first seeing OG King Kong as a nipper, and basically anything Ray Harryhausen blessed with his magic hands. Convinced a sceptical friend to watch this with me last night and have to say I was really disappointed.
On paper, it sounded fucking amazing. I could have been told it had the worst story in all of filmmaking prior to seeing it, and I still wouldn't have cared much - it's giant robots vs. giant monsters ffs, that's all I need to know. It started off really promisingly, using news reports to give you all the background info you need in the first few minutes so it can straight to the good stuff, but after half an hour I noticed my pre-film excitement had all but dried up and I was feeling a little disappointed.
I can't put my finger on any one thing, more a culmination of little things.
- I didn't think the Kaiju were particularly interesting or had much variety
- I found it hard to follow a lot of the action sequences because they were all in the dark and too fast
- I'd like to have seen more interesting offensive options for the Jaeger, and more stuff to differentiate themselves from one another.
- I don't see how making each Jaeger needing two neurally connected pilots adds anything from just having a lone pilot of each, apart from giving them a contrived reason to throw a romance story in there
- (nitpicking now) Gipsy Danger is a fucking awful name for something supposedly so badass. I actually thought the old-school OG Jaeger was the best design. Can't remember his name at all though.
- Utterly forgettable performances from all involved (although this is way down the list of importance in a film like this)
This is gonna sound ridiculously cliche, but the whole thing just lacked a soul for me.
It was still OK, I just thought I would love the shit out of it. It was still miles better than the godawful Clash of the Titans remake.
Surprisingly, my friend thought it was great.
EDIT: Forgot to add that I fucking loved Elba's bit where Raleigh grabs his arm, his face gets all serious and he says "One, never touch me again" (pause) "and Two - NEVER touch me again". So badass.

Okay, I finally FINALLY saw it. In 3D, which was a first since I've actually never seen a 3D movie before.
I saw it last night and spent the better part of today thinking wether or not I actually like the movie. I left the theatre pretty underwhelmed and I've been thinking about why that happened. The movie is spectacular, it looked great but somehow it didn't satisfy at all.
Then I realised why - it was because I had seen the movie already. This entire movie has been spoiled through the two or three trailers that were released before the movie opened. Everything, from

Which also brings me to my biggest problem with this movie's story - it spends the better part of the runtime trying to solve a problem of which the audience already knows the solution to. Everybody knows
Besides that, Charlie Day was awful. Just, awful. His "if I yell my lines and talk really fast it's probably funny" ramblings weren't funny and he had zero on-screen chemistry with the other scientist. They were presented as some sort of comic relief but it never worked. Not for me, at least. There's a lot of random yelling for no reason in this movie, come to think of it.
Another comment I've been reading a lot and I completely agree with is the screentime of Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha and not to mention fucking Coyote Tango.
I also never really understood the "rivalry" between all the pilots, you'd think petty arrogance and whatnot would take a sidestep when it comes to saving the world from certain doom.
I don't know, I feel like I can write an entire essay about this movie, maybe I'm overthinking it way too much. It's just that when I am so hyped for a movie and it ultimately disappoints, I'd like to know WHY. The movie peaked during the

I've seen it in both 2D and 3D IMAX. 2D was fine and in some scenes the action was a little clearer. But the 3D is done well and in some scenes it is fantastic and you feel like you're there (i.e.
Mako's childhood flashback was terrifying in 3D and felt realistic
Just saw it for the first time. Damn I loved it. Sound was sadly pretty low in the theater I was to, but overall the movie was great and so much fun.
I really loved the action sequences, so good. They were directed very well so even at the most intense moments I could follow the action very easily, never getting lost. They were spectacular, awe-inspiring, and they just felt great. Unlike action movies like Transformers going full retard with giant robots jumping around agilely like felines with disregard of any logic the weight of the combatants was really felt in their every move.
And the designs were so good. Each kaiju was great, which makes it even more mind-boggling how movies like GINO or Cloverfield could screw up big time when they had to focus on only one single design.
Obviously it wasn't deep or anything, but so fun to watch.

The accents and dialogue are so bad in the english version that seeing it dubbed into Japanese is probably a big improvement.

The first fight made me jump a little because I wasn't expecting the 3D effect, but otherwise it just provides some nice depth which, imo, helps keep track of things during the battles.

So we'll have Striker, Gipsy, Cherno, and Crimson? I wonder if Series 3 will have two Kaiju, then, or if they'll throw in someone like Coyote Tango? (Personally I'd rather have more Kaiju toys but that's just me, plus I doubt we'd get a Series 4 with three Kaiju in it if S3 has two Jaegers again)

Local shops have been selling out of PR merchandise. One of the owners was complaining how the movie didn't have enough and they would be making a killing off the stuff.

Sideshow is coming out with a bunch as well but they take a while.
WTF that was all the stock they made for Series 1? It didn't even make it through opening weekend! I've been checking local stores and online retailers for them for weeks now and all that was for nothing? They seriously underestimated the demand for PR merchandise.

Just saw it, kinda disappointed by it.
The fights were not bad, but they weren't really that satisfying either. There wasn't any sense of bone crushing action. Kinda always felt like two toys being smashed together. Over all the fight choreography was just lacking.
Considering that the action scenes are by far the best part of the movie, I over all kinda left feeling indifferent towards them. Also didn't care for most of the fighting taking place in the ocean. More day time fighting would've been cool too.
The story was pretty damn boring, and I feel the same about the characters. I couldn't wait for things to move along and get to the fighting.
Idris Elba was pretty good considering what he was working with.
I'd definitely call this a rental.
