Fighting Games Weekly | July 22-28 | Life's A Beech

Hey all, I'm getting back into fighters & was wondering if the PC community is active or if I should go with PS3 versions of games. I grabbed SSF4:AE on Steam but I haven't played online yet, I was thinking about picking up KOF XIII & SFxTekken as well but I want to go where the community is most active.

KoF XIII console netcode is ass, no PC version yet.
SFxT PC community is much smaller than consoles

Without an X-Pack I think it just starts fading away. The game's problem is that each character isn't all that deep, so matches feel like they're playing out relatively similarly after a while.

Man, what I wouldn't give for an expansion that added Junpei and the other P3 team members (except Ken, dammit). And even more
a "what if" mode that added P3 protag (M & F), Shinji, and Takaya & Co.

Uh... what?

I agree that the game needs a bit more of support from ArcS but the matches in the game do not play out the same, not at all. Not even close. In fact, not even in some strange, alternate reality where I can make EVO Top 8 in multiple games is this the case.

I'd love an expansion to the game, but yeah I'm surprised that Junpei didn't get included at all in the game as is.

Fuck. Yes.

FUCK. YES.

I don't even care about the first part of the spoilered thing, but yes, more characters, that's all I really want. Well, more characters/stages/music.

he's trying to say some of the characters are super shallow and thus their gameplan is the same in almost every match.

Someone understands me! :) (tyty)

Yeah. I agree to an extent. A lot of the top tier character gameplan are so dominating that they just do the same thing to everybody without much thought behind it. They need to rework chie so hard. The fact that she shuts down so many characters with the same setup is stupid.

Mitsuru, Aigis, Yu, and Teddie can be nerfed a bit to make it more fair. I don't know what they can do to labrys since she is so basic but low tier. I almost want to say she needs a re-work as well.

Unfortunately those characters are so powerful that you can't do the whole "no nerfs, just buff the low tier" thing.

I think it ended up as a trade-off to the simplification they aimed at to ease Person RPG fans into the game. It reduced barrier to entry, but also limited the options. And I actually think the trade-off is worth it here. It's just one that limits its exposure as a competitive tourney fighter, but not every game needs to be SF4.

Naw I don't think thats it at all. The stuff that Chie/Aigis/Mitsuru all do isn't easy for people new to fighting games. They are decently advance techniques. The problem is just balance. I mean, its not like the high tier characters don't have an answer to each other's gameplan in some way.

I mean its telling when Yu's DP is air unblockable (first hit), can be super cancelled and be done in the air. Or that mitsuru DP has a huge as hitbox, can be super cancel to avoid being punished (but can be baited), and doable in the air.

While yukiko can't super cancel hers, has to be grounded, and only does 100 damage. Or labrys has a reversal that just kills herself against Chie. Or that you can tech Elizabeth's reversal.

Don't think elizabeth is that big of a handicap at our level of play.
Yup, I can confirm you that.
She has her fair share of weaknesses, but her basic mind-games work quite well at mid-level. I have some good results with her up to A/S rank people; after that I usually get demolished, but for the moment it has more to do with my level of play than the character. ^^

I would play Elizabeth in P4A anyway, so I imagine I would just be sad at how abysmal she is.
You'll have to work a bit harder for your wins than say Yu or Chie, but for me it's a good thing: it prevents a bit this whole "my character is shallow" thing going on with the game.
I think she may be one of my favorite fighting game characters ever: I usually enjoy characters that rely on mind games and outwitting your opponent quite a lot, and on this point she's really FUN to play with.
A win with her actually feels like a win.

It was posted 5 days after the japanese console release. Which came months after the arcade release.
Yeah, we already knew there were stupid characters in there. ^^

Yeah I was referring to the NA release. Chie was even dumber in the original version of the game.

I'll have to look back at the threads because I recall mentioning that the game was really stupid and folks just brushed it off. I specifically remember mentioning the DPs as a prime example.

eh dp being two buttons isn't that bad. Its the whole some character's dp are godlike, others are garbage.

I mean, is anybody really afraid of Yukiko's, naoto's or elizabeth's dp? I'm definitely worried about mitsuru and yu's dp everytime I play against them.

I think I remember something like that, yeah.
It's also possible I was on the side of "DPs are not the real problem of the game", which I would still defend nowadays. :)
Well, depending on what we're talking about... 2-buttons DP are not a real problem to me, but the quite stupid ones of Yu and Mitsuru can definitively be cringe-inducing...

Yeah, this.

Looks the guys from Season Beatings is running the tournament for them

Huntress (she got a few cameos in Arrow) and possible relation to Batman (because the game needs more Batman)?

Supergirl/Powergirl (just because Superman is so "popular" they might as well toss in a couple more Kryptonians with Zod)?

Sub-Zero?

Hey, Freddy sold well. Does Warner Bros own Nightmare on Elm Street?

I think I remember something like that, yeah.

Yeah, this.

No. it wasn't ever about it being two buttons. It's the imbalance in the design of what DPs the characters got. Giving Mitsuru and Yu these giant, offensive DPs was stupid. While lesser characters don't have anything with near the same utility.

I would love it if Elizabeth's instant kill wasn't blockable. When opponents don't know you can simply get out of it after activation, they have to respect it and that makes life easier.
