"Pre-Alpha Gameplay"

Doesn't show any gameplay.

Edit: Excuse me.. 7 seconds of gameplay @3:33 in a 5 min video.

next gen is coming and we still have fucking 720p trailers come on game developers deliver the 1080p footage to the press or press upload 1080p if you get them.

Note to Crytek:

Nobody wants to see anything other than a revamped combat system.

I'm one of the (seemingly) few Xbox One fans around GAF and even I think Ryse has looked awful, gameplay-wise.

This dev diary does nothing for me.

Aside from the QTEs what's wrong with it? Didn't they say you didn't have to have the QTEs and it was normal free flow combat? I thought they were just optional for different executions.

the art looks too down to earth and mundane, graphics are ok...

after wasting $60 + tax on Crysis 3, hard to get excited about another Cevat Yerli game

Aside from QTEs? What else is there? I'd like to see the combat without them, if they supposedly have that option. Because it looks like the QTEs are so ingrained into the battles that there's nothing else.

Same trailer as on comic-con panel, at least here in direct feed, but very poor quality.
Hope for proper quality from gamersyde :)

What i havent noticed earlier is gold knife on Marius back belt at 4:09 and how its physics reacts to body movement. Quite neat stuff.

Looks great. Day one purchase for me.

Of all the games I desperately want to be good, this is at the top. I'm a huge Roman history nerd and I would geek out so hard over this game if it actually ended up being high quality. Too bad it won't.

Hype rysing.

In seriousness though, I am getting more intrigued about this game the more they show. hopefully at gamescom they do a blowout on it and really show it off.

I've played the demo of this game and its not a QTE fest. The game reminded me a lot of Heavenly Sword in the sense that you go from one arena to the next and just kill everyone. You have some basic combos and enemies just attack you all around you. Just like GOW or HS when the enemies get weak a bit you can do the QTE finishers but you dont have to do them I dont think you can just keep mashing at the people. Also the QTEs were super easy many times i just pressed the wrong button in the sequence but I still killed the guy.

Combat doesn't seem very deep at all (but it was just a demo). Graphics are pretty good, nice IQ not mind blowing but still good looking game. Apparently the game might also have kinect where you can order the people to block or attack in sections.

Overall its not just QTEs which is good but gameplay wasn't anything special either.

Well after the initial backlash I remember someone posting a statement from either Crytek or the gaming media at E3 who said the QTEs were just for crazy executions (like GOW) and they included a bunch of them in the video to show off the animations. They then alluded to the standard combat just being your typical hack and slash.

edit: ^ The poster above has a bit better insight on it.

Yeah Yerli isn't really the game director I hoped he would become.

I had great respect for him. The man and his brother I think, assembled the best programmers, graphic engineers, artists and game designers under one roof and his studio made a unique sub genre of open sandbox FPS. Then something bad happened after the release of Crysis Warhead...

Warhead was good game, Crytek Budapest should have been given another chance at making a video game :(

During in the E3 reveal, Marius whittles down one soldier with basic slashes until a (B) prompt pops up up over his head and then moves on to another soldier (who was just standing three feet away, watching) and does the same. He then performs a lengthy, slow-motion QTE that involved 3 button prompts and around 6 real-time seconds in order to execute them. For me, that's the bare minimum of what I'd call "gameplay".

To be fair, I guess I'm not really a fan of linear, context-based combat in general. (Full disclosure: I'm the sort of old-fashioned, asshole gamer that thinks that the term "Cinematic" should stick to film)

Yes, you don't have to use the QTEs but they're so currently ingrained into the system that it's probably even worse without them at this point.

There are better ways to do this kind of combat. The parry/riposte system from Dark Souls comes to mind.

Looks stunning graphically, and I love the Rome setting. Just not so sure about the gameplay. Looks absolutely basic and derivative.
