Del Toro <3

Involved in a lengthy debate with former colleague who venemously hated PR. He maintains that it's no different to Transformers, has no heart, and that special effects are basically no different to sex scenes in porn movies. A really snobbish tone being taken in arguing that spectacle has no place in cinema.

I wonder why he even went to see it - it was so obvious he would hate it. I take great pleasure in the fact it's going to be on loop in his front room as his kid's new favourite film!

So, I need help. I really want to like this film but I can't understand, why doesn't
the alien race send all the Kaiju at once after the re-exploration of the first few? Did I miss something?

They are scouts. They are send one by one and they adapt the following scouts to the level of threats they encounters. They analyse us and create more suitable monster to fight us each time

^ spoiler tag the last 2 posts please

i want to go see it a second time but i just cant find the time ugh. im scared they wont show it in 3d anymore next week :( i really want to catch it on IMAX too.

Answer is spoiler tagged.

Because they don't have all of the Kaiju all at once. We see, several times, that they BUILD the Kaiju, just like we are building the Jaegers. But they are getting better at building them, hence them getting bigger, stronger, and eventually sending two and even three at a time. The Kaiju are their technology, like the Jaegers are ours.

whoah, i hadnt thought of that. i actually assumed they were just testing humans and scoping them out by sending stronger and stronger kaiju over time. the whole thing about first sending the scouts and then the executioners. building kaijus would make a lot of sense.

i just figured they could have sent 1000s of them at once but they just didnt feel like it.

I'll even add :

they might be breeding and bio engineering kaijus. I'm sure I saw a craddle with half a dozen of tiny knifeheads at one point. Also, alien are dicks. They sent Otachi, a pregnant female to the point of delivery to fight in an alien world. That's sick. Or it's even nastier : they planed the baby could sneak in maybe grow silent and make more damage

That's still stupid.

Why not
save up and unleash them all at once?

The drift scenes pretty much spelled it out. The next time you see Pacific Rim, whether it be in the theater or on DVD, pay particular attention to the
drift scenes with the Kaiju brain and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. They show the aliens building Kaiju several times, and even mention how they grow and build them like weapons.

The baby wasn't ready for delivery. It died quite fast so it would probably have taken some time to be birth-ready. It is like a baby born after 6-7 months, it could be born, but survival is hard.

Why not

They might be moving on a schedule and need to move away from their current world as fast as possible or they might simply not be able to store actual full grown Kaiju at their homeworld. You'd need to feed them for instance.

Saw it last night finally, at a showing that was way too late for an old man like me, in 3D.

It was so gloriously dumb. I loved it.

Also, screw this NECA shit, I want 3A to make huge, light up versions of all the Jaegers

Goddamn it, I finally have the time to see a movie tonight, and the only option I have is IMAX 3D. No 2D or regular 3D viewings. I wanna see the movie but I don't want to spend $20 per person to do it.

I think they typically don't mean the resistance we were giving them on Earth. They have a finite amount of resources as well in a way so instead of being wasteful upon meeting resistance they probe for weaknesses and modify/adapt for that.

Also keep in mind that
the last time they were here, Dinosaurs were alive. Didn't plan for a bunch of hairless monkeys building giant robots

the gipsy danger theme might even be better than the main theme. so good.

i forgot about that too. man i really need a rewatch.

i just think its awesome dinosaurs were like "GTFO my planet" and were able to send them away for millions of years.

I knew the merchandising was selling too well to not make more toys, and Series 1 is getting reissued next month for those who missed out!

Thank you for addressing this. I was kinda worried that I missed out on decently priced Series 1. Picking them all up the second they are re released!

I'm seriously considering replacing my longtime Batman Arkham Asylum Square Enix figure I have standing in my bookshelf with one of the Pacific Rim mechs.

I can't decide between Gipsy Danger and Crimson Typhoon. Gipsy is the hero of the movie but Crimson's design is so freaking good.

Anyone have both?

That would have been funny, but the reason they gave was that the atmosphere wasn't to the aliens' liking back then.

Apparently, modern Earth pollution has the planet perfectly suitable for them.

there's an article in the examiner that says (i quote here) "ComicBook.com reported today that Guillermo del Toro has revealed that work is already underway on “Pacific Rim 2.” Warner Bros. has given the green light for Guillermo del Toro to begin work on the script, but no target release date has been announced. “Pacific Rim” was released in theatres earlier this month and has been well-received by fans of the director, but the film has sadly underperformed at the box office."

is this real?

Think this has come up before; basically WB is saying sure, go ahead and get stuff together, but not committing. Nothing really to see there.

And lol underperforming, if anything that's because they didn't give it any marketing and put the rest into propping up Man of Steel (which I liked immensely too)

NEED MOAR MERCH

Both are worth getting, although if you can only get one I'd go for Crimson Typhoon. The design is awesome.

This the RARE post-converted 3D movie that is actually worth the ticket.

See my post in the spoiler thread why that is BS.

As stupid as it is, in a movie where interdimensional monsters fight giant robots perhaps we can also let this one slide.

Every aspect of this movie is BS if you stop and think about it.

Yeah, it really is. Thank god Striker and Cherno Alpha aren't out yet.

So, the graphic novel sucks. Short, bland as art gets, and pretty much just provides the boring backstory to the boring dialogue bits (i.e. most) of the film. What a bloody waste of money that was.

Local shops have been selling out of PR merchandise. One of the owners was complaining how the movie didn't have enough and they would be making a killing off the stuff.

The PR heroclix are also selling extremely well.

So weird.

I'm big into Heroclix, and non-comic-book stuff does not usually sell very well. For one, it's often out of scale with other game elements size-wise and power-wise, and it's also not tournament-legal (which doen't matter much, but does reduce the gamer interest I guess).

These things are the exception, though. They're selling great, even to people who haven't seen the movie.

I have some ordered that I have yet to get, but I played with a couple and they are really fun.

So my Shinkawa poster just arrived (thank you so much, Fantomex!) and I'll post pics of it later, but I have a pressing question for you guys:

I'm going to FanExpo Canada in Toronto next month, and Ron Perlman's going to be there. Should I get him to sign my poster, or keep it as-is? Either way it's going up framed on my wall, I just want to get opinions as to whether or not a signature would sully its look or not.

Get some plated shoes and have him sign those.

Del Toro <3

She killed it in her scenes, it's rare to see a scene with a kid crying and not look annoying.

she conveyed fear and desperation and wonder
when she saw Coyote Tango
, so well. I was REALLY impressed.

It's fucking Ron Perlman dude, get that signature. Come on now.

Get him to sign something, even if it's your ass. It's Ron Perlman!
