Phil Fish has Twitter tantrum, cancels Fez 2 and goes home with his ball

How is it rude to call him whiny when he's being exactly that?

I guess Fish can escape from criticism on the grounds that everyone must play nice and never call anyone out on anything.
Nah, there's plenty of folks who cross that line and just come off as dicks on the internet trying to be funny when it comes to Phil Fish. Pot calling the kettle black, and all that.

There are very easy ways he could have ignored it all. He chose to let it in and let it get to him.

You do realize that we are all not the same right? Some people have tempers and have trouble controlling themselves when constantly insulted. You act like its easy but you are clearly not in this guys shoes...

I know I don't handle stress well, I dont have a temper but stress makes me sick as hell.

It's rude to call him a bitch.
It's living in glass houses to judge him based on his juvenile behavior while lobbing juvenile taunts anonymously from GAF and elsewhere.

Call him what you like, just get ready when others call you out.

Holy crap people are so ruthless to him and then they wonder why he acts like a dick. You guys should check out the comments on the fez 2 cancellation message. Yikes.

Can somebody summarize?
All I know is he made some dumb comments a few times. What's the big drama he's referring to?

It's pretty simple. When Fish started making dumb comments, however long ago that was now, people responded. There's a lot of people on the internet, and thus a lot of responses. A lot of them were at least as dumb as the kind Fish might make. Fish reacts, then other people react, ad nauseum. Only one side of this exchange takes a beating mentally with each cycle, but still it continues because Fish does not seem to have the faculties to get out of it. Results in today's events.

He worked as an independent game developer. If there was any work related stress, especially after releasing the financial hit Fez, it was 100% placed upon him by himself. He had a Twitter account but couldn't handle the drama it caused after him after he opened his mouth and having an opinion on every little thing.

I get you.

But that doesn't mean people can't call him whiny. They just can't use offensive and juvenile words.

He even posted this on the site.

Man the comments on his post are truly disgusting. I really hate the gaming community sometimes.

I am very sympathetic to people with mental health issues but ultimately all the rest of us can do is urge them to seek treatment--accommodation does not extent to enabling and at this point anyone covering his story to comment on it is enabling. Thankfully this will be the last thread on the subject we need to have.

this about sums up my opinion

Whenever Phil Fish is mentioned, there is always an army of people who act like he is a fucking zombie nazi who has personally killed their dog and is planning grizzly hits on each and every family member of theirs. I haven't really been following the debacle which started it all, but I don't think anybody deserves this kind of treatment, even if they do have a sorta bad reputation. Sometimes it feels like people barely even remember why they are supposed to hate on Fish, they just do, often unwittingly extending that to his work as well.

What good did ever come of things like these?

Despite his insistence, I have a hard time believing he's actually leaving the business. That being said, I can also believe that the amount of crap he's had to put up with, both warranted and unwarranted, has left him in a delicate enough state to do something like this. The Fez saga takes a turn for the strange...

I posted this in the other thread, but these are some possibly pertinent tidbits from Phil's GAF post history.

ive been bi-polar all my life.

On working at Ubisoft:
yup, i worked there for 9 months and actually lost my mind.
the amount of bullshit you have to deal with is frightening.
and considering the payoff, totally not worth it.
when you work at ubi, you constantly have to deal with editorial, which is a bunch of out of touch frenchmen who come to town every couple of month to tell you everything suck and completely change the direction of the project. most teams try to ignore them as much as possible, but they basicly own your ass, so it can be difficult.

to give you a very good example, when redsteel shipped, editorial was giving itself a BIG pat on the back, saying things like "at last, a team listened to us, and it made for a great game!". and as we all know, redsteel turned out to be a laughable piece of shit.

they recently upped the entry level salary by a few grand in a desperate effort to attract students. this is because ubi is constantly losing a LOT of people to other studios.
in montreal, there's basicly 2 types of people: people who work at ubi, and people who worked at ubi.

the 9 months i spent there working on the ****ing horrible trainwreck that was open season nearly made me leave videogames forever.

now im working at another studio, on far less sexy games, but i do little to no overtime, and i dont need to deal with a bunch of ****ing frenchmen with their heads up their asses.

i was fired just ebfore the fall of martin tremblay (he was fired too, BTW). so i was lucky enough never to work under the Yannis Mallet reign.

i dont know the guy personally but ive met him a number of times at a number of industry functions and he always striked me as being the biggest douche i have ever encountered.

i once saw him introduce clint hocking at an IGDA meeting. it was 5 minutes of pure masturbation. ubisoft is great, clint is great, together we are great, ubisoft is a world leader, clint is a great designer, we are great, arent we great? we're just so great.
everytime this man is given a mike its exactly as if he's just standing there, masturbating furiously.

that said, clint IS great, and a wonderful guy and i dont know for the life of me why he still works there. he must have enough power to overrride all the bullshit.

anyway.

i had a nervous breakdown (happens more than you think, especialy at ubisoft) towards the end of my project, open season, and was fired a week later to the day.

Maybe some of the people here throwing insults at the guy for acting like a dick should reflect on how they're acting online, too. Some serious hypocrisy going on.

Can't blame him for feeling the need to distance himself from the gaming community.

Good point, Stump. I wish the best for Phil, as far as health and lifestyle are concerned.

He actually has mental health issues?

LOL these tweets look like something my 13 year old son and daughter wouldn't even send out...

This is grade school nonsense. Everyone involved comes off as just childish and pathetic. Amazing.

Wow. OK. If you put yourself out there, you have to have some pretty thick skin. I learned that my first year in the industry. If he didn't want the attention, he could have had a bit of a better filter.

Next week: Phil Kaufman Fish makes his triumphant return to the games industry!

lol

A lot of his earlier drama's like the whole CHOKE ON MY DICK comment were cases of provoking what may have been an even dumber backlash which I didn't feel much sympathy for him, but if this is about that recent indies comment thing then yeah, he didn't deserve any of that. Dumb that something so ultimately insignificant may get him to quit something he clearly had a lot of passion and talent for, ignoring everything else surrounding Fez's release.

Still a bit confused as to Fez 2's state though, keep reading conflicting messages about whether that's dead now or still going to happen.

If he is completely and utterly incapable of being a minor celebrity in the public eye without having meltdowns, this is the best thing he can do for himself. Well, this and seek professional help.

Unfortunate, really enjoyed Fez and was looking forward to the sequel. That being said, Fish seemed like a pretty unpleasant guy a lot of the time and this move comes off as cowardly.
