Wired: Final Fantasy Isn’t Dying. It’s Already Dead

pfff.

Final fantasy is far from being dead , what's dead is the sense of reality from anyone who wrote this.

How can you say that it's dead when S-E is about to release FF14 2.0
AFter the superb reveal at E3 ( acclamed reveal ) ?

Especially after ( except ff14 1.0) all of their games were commercial sucess?

Damn so many companies would want to have a dead franchise like final fantasy.

Granted its a lifeless husk of what it used to be, but thats a different argument.13 sold pretty well didn't it? Like 5+ million copies. That doesn't sound dead to me.
Every Final Fantasy game that followed saw diminishing returns versus that number. Final Fantasy XIV was a trainwreck that savaged the franchise's reputation (though I'm looking forward to A Realm Reborn). It's not just X, it's not just XIII, it's not just XIV. All these things together led to a very damaged brand. Could FFXV pull numbers comparable to XIII? Yeah, maybe even better. But the damage has still been done, and they still need to prove they can correct the course of their ship. I guess A Realm Reborn and XV will show just how interested they are in fixing things.

The thing that kills me is that I enjoyed FFXIII and FFXIII-2 in spite of some of the stuff that was a little... weird. I mean with costumes of Serah and stuff like that. Now they're just dialing that up to the next level with FFXII:LR Barbie dress-and-play edition. It's pretty obnoxious.

The series may not be dead but it is a shell of its former self. Then again, most of us would really enjoy watching it rocket back to life so the people could easily be behind a "come back kid" scenario.

Yes, but like the Phoenix it can rise again.

They need to get away from only trying to please the Japanese audience.

They need to work on expanding their western audience too. Go back to what made FF7 such a success. Hell, just remake FF7 already like EVERYBODY wants them to.

Its friggin ridiculous. They are literally sitting on a mountain of cash with the FF7 remake and they refuse to do it.

It's pretty stupid and immature to spend a good bit of time on breast modeling and physics, but Mass Effect and The Witcher are probably even less mature and intelligent when it comes to sex and I don't think anyone calls those series dead.

Maybe Kohler has though, I don't read many of his articles.

My biggest worry as of now is there is no impetus for them to change what they're doing.

Their mobile games apparently sell well.
FFXI still bringing in money for very little expense.
People still buy the games, even if they don't like them afterwards.

I think some games would have to crash hard for them to really look at FF and try to fix it.

Goto and Toriyama were talking about Lightning's cup size and jiggle because they were asked about it in that interview. They didn't bring it up.

It was asked about in an interview because they changed the character's design in the first place. I'm not sure why you think that this somehow invalidates the editorial.

They don't refuse , They can't ..lightning doesn't strike the same place twice.

Huh? Just a remake of the game with updated graphics/sound is the bare bones of what's required and they will sell truck tons and at the same time give their customers what they want. The lightning is already there.

If by "every Final Fantasy after XIII," you mean a sequel and an MMO, I don't think that's a comparison that we can draw any conclusions from.

Last good FF game was FFXII. Series has been dead since and will probably remain so for a while. FFXV isn,t looking good IMO, probably another game like FFXIII with soulless characters and wasted design.

I think as a brand, Final Fantasy has less impact (at least in North America anyway) in the last couple of years than, say, ten years ago, though I personally think XII was the last one I really enjoyed. I think Kohler's piece is on the hyperbolic end here, but it does speak to the fact that SE is so keen on seeing this lackluster XIII brand through, when it wasn't particularly interesting from the start.

I don't think it's a dead or dying brand. This is a series that's had a lasting impact for 20+ years. It can be "fixed," even if it takes some radical readjustments or decisions.

How is it dead exactly? Theatrythmn and XIII-2 were two of my favorite games last year, and the XV trailer was one of the most talked about parts of E3. And I've heard nothing but good things from the revamped XIV.

I think Final Fantasy XIII was a good game in its own right. It just wasn't Final Fantasy. If they branded it any other way, I think it would have been looked upon more favorably.

Anyway, as I understand (I haven't played it) many people saw FF XIII-2 as an incremental improvement over FF XIII and when SE saw how dismal FF XIV was doing, they decided to reboot it. This tells me that they're learning, or at least trying to. As long as they keep at it, I think they'll eventually succeed.

Final Fantasy won't literally be dead until the brand is no longer profitable. I don't see that happening ever.

I wish Toriyama would just take like five developers, go ahead and pay them to make the Lightning h-game he so desperately wants for his own personal use, and then leave Final Fantasy alone.

Who are you kidding?
From what it was back on the PS1 /2, It's a corpse being held up with strings.
It's nothing in comparison to its golden age.

I think you have to step back and try to remember when each Final Fantasy release was a momentous event. Now it's not, hence it's kinda dead to a lot of people.

Final Fantasy XV looks great, but it's just another great looking game now. Not the holy shit moment it used to be.

And would take YEARS.

Look how long it's taken to HD-ify FFX/FFX-2. Imagine what is essentially a WHOLE NEW GAME.

Yes, that's the point. Remake the game, which means investing in it like a full-on new game. Making games takes years. That's what people want. They are a game company, they make games. You say that as if it's some impossible feat for them or something out of the ordinary.

I'd usually argue against someone that said this, but the Final Fantasy brand this gen has been dragged through the mud this gen. Hopefully it makes a big comeback next gen.

If they're still selling well enough to be made how can Final Fantasy games be dead?

What a way to grandstand.

It's not dead. So much hyperbole about Final Fantasy, ugh.

The franchise itself isn't dead, but the FF8 team. (The guys responsible for 8, 10, and 13,) shouldn't be let anywhere near the franchise ever again, EVER! Honestly, I'm surprised Square hadn't learned their lesson on this after 8, though I suppose 10 wasn't too bad.

I'm enjoying FFXIV ARR however, and I have reasonable confidence in XV.

Speaking of hyperbole...

First, do you honestly believe that every single person that worked on VIII and X also worked on XIII?

Second, those are two of the most popular Final Fantasy's and yet you're trying to say they killed the franchise. YOU might dislike them but don't try and lump them in with S-E's current problems.

He's right, we were talking about this in the thread that revealed her new costume.

This is the worst generation for Final Fantasy games and the future doesn't look too bright.

Sure, faithful fans will stick around but anyone casually interested in that franchise at any point in last 20 years has fallen off at this point.

EXACTLY!

This isn't lightning striking twice.

Its that the original lighting bolt never vanished. They could do a dull fledged remake of FF7 with much more minimal effort than a full fledged new game and it would make FAR more money.

Any intelligent publisher would've done this YEARS AGO! TIt seems like the only reason SE won't do it is out of pure intransigence. Its like they are too obstinate to admit the game was such a hit and their new games such compared to it.

When will people learn to stop criticising cultures they don't understand? Or just learn to accept change in general? Lightning Returns looks awesome. I loved FF13 and I've been with the series since the 90's, FF6 is probably my fav.

Psssst, that doesn't make it dead. Believe it or not, there's actually a teensy little space between "Most popular game franchise in the world" and "dead".

I'll be waiting until XV is out before deciding on FF's long term future. I consider the XIII games to be a blip (hopefully) and even though I like XIII it's nowhere near the highlights of the series. XIII-2 was okay but ultimately flawed, and LR look goodish in some areas and absolutely embarrassing in others (boobgate..., Changing Lightning into some weird sex symbol *shudders*)

X was good but had flaws, XII I remember enjoying a lot but dragged a bit towards the end. So hopefully a new generation and a new refresh for the franchise, and no Lightning! It's definitely not dead, but very much wounded recently.
