Last months thread saw the most post and views of any Indie thread so far and we saw our small community grow by a few people that share their experiences and game finds with us. Simple, yet very cool and engaging survival management game with that distinctive tall 2D model aesthetic (Sword and Sworcery, Riot). Disturbing yet addictive (the can't stop until you succeed type), it draws you into its world in which you are tasked to help a small group to survive. The announced remake/sequel looks VERY ambitious and definitely deserves a spot on our most anticipated Indie games list.

DQ is probably the best, straight-up Tower Defense game I've played in a while. Seems like this past year or so, having your game be "tower defense" like is the new, hip thing (that and rogue-likes.) DQ is the developer's love letter to the old-fashioned, restart-until-you-perfect-the-stage, TD goodness.

This is a surprisingly deep game in the same vein like Candy Box, particularly once you open up the Nethack-ish map stuff. Yes it's a grinder, but it lends itself well to the pick-up-and-play style. In fact, I forgot I had the game running in a tab -- I kept coming back to the game for a couple of days in short bursts of gameplay. Highly addictive.

Fantastic Portal-style 3D puzzle game with an interesting story and an evolving world that builds up to the supernatural Lovecraftian stuff rather than blow its wad early like most games.

I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. Puzzle Platformer. Your goal is to restore power to the Amp-Tree-System, a now darkened labyrinth of over 150 compartments, & defeat the intruder. This game is pretty cool due to its non linear approach that just lets you explore, unintrusive puzzles, some smart puzzle designs and a metroidvania progression where you find skills to progress in other parts of the dungeon.

A creative and exploratory sandbox game by a small group of French students. A truly free-form experience where you get what you give... we can take our time to investigate a surreal and gigantic world of towering structures or stay where we are and build a house out of mysterious blocks that we can conjure out of thin air. Using the tools we're given we can build towers or bridges, we can slice blocks apart at any angle, blow apart our creations, or just clean up the pristine world we find ourselves in.

This game is pretty cool. Its a platformer in which you unlock characters, skills for those characters and world styles and you need to switch them around in a level to solve them. Seeing the levels instantly switch the art style and with it, the corresponding level features is a pretty cool idea. Only played the first 2 levels, but the systems seem pretty solid and deep enough to voice a recommendation.

Puzzle game platformer in a charming World of Goo-inspired style in which you control.. the platform. Terraform the land and manipulate objects to guide the main character towards the goal while collecting extra points. Very cool feeling to pull off these levels.

A rather simple roguelike with a fantastic artstyle that oozes charm. The game checks the genre basics with loots and cool items and an easy to grasp levelling system and allows for 2-4 hour runs.

Basically a randomly generated action RPG (think Zelda overworlds) in which you can tame animals, kill bosses, level up and stare at blocks. This game is drop dead gorgeous, seriously. But even if we were anticipating it for a while now, the game still needs more content. Taking a stroll through this marvellously crafted game is still an enjoyable, although maybe a bit uneven experience atm especially with the rather unfair beginning. Game gets better after you passed the earlier levels however.

Side scrolling survival action game. You walk right, kill zombies, pick up weapons, sell stuff, upgrade yourself, buy ammo and kill more enemies. With three game modes, hundreds of items, weapons and grenades, and a city that is never the same twice, there is always something new hiding round the corner in Dead Pixels.

It could be loosely described as a ''platform game'' through the author's stream of consciousness, where you hectically jump from one sentence to another, instinctively trying to put some meaning into it, creating patterns or just goofing around with associations, seeing where will it take you, in the maze like reality that consists only of signs.

Making their second and final appearance in this thread series. Its a classic 2D space shooter set in the distant future...with lots of explosions. Fantastically looking, branching paths and lots of level and enemy variety make this something to check out for shmup fans.

First and foremost, Infested Planet is a game about exciting tactical skirmishes. It’s about fighting against incredible odds and coming out on top. That’s what happens when you land on a planet with 5 marines and blow the heck out of 10000 aliens.

It's a short text-based game with an interesting premise and has some replayability, give it a try. For the sake of not spoiling the experience, I'd say give it a go! Its rather short, so just give it a try.

The base game could be considered a tad short for its price, I completed it in just under 2 hours although I predict completing all the optional puzzles should at least double that time and the gameplay is really impressive. If anyone is that particular type of Zelda fan where you totally loved the dungeon puzzles then I would say you might want to check this out because the entirety of Ittle Dew is really a tribute to that gameplay.

Very charming open sidescrolling action platformer with frequent check points and riddles! The art style looks a bit simple, but it really comes together nicely ingame.I really like the way they approached the level design here, meaning that almost every room can be considered a puzzle or platforming challenge, after which you can save, allowing for carefree experimentation.

The revival of the isometric RPGs is upon us and the first title just peeked into our living rooms. Shadowrun Returns is a turn based Squad tactics game with a rather linear mission structure. The combat itself however is extremely rewarding (play higher than normal) and the writing and story make up for any of the shortcomings the game unfortunately also presents. Its not a perfect game, but its still a very enjoyable one and the Editor promises great things from the community.

Very fun and addicting simulation game. Its not overly deep, but has enough going on to be definitely worth playing through once. You build and upgrade the facilities, manage the schedule of your workers to decrease the amount of people using the recreational facilities and elevators at the same time, manage their work efficiency, happiness and everything else that needs doing (repairing PCs, building repairs).

skyRogue is, at the time of writing, a simple little dogfighter with a slick aesthetic and a great arcade flight model. It's a one man operation and is the product of around 30-odd hours of programming. The idea is to create a realtime combat roguelike with aircraft, and while the roguelike elements are yet to be put into the game - super curious about that - skyRogue is already pretty awesome. Works very well with 360 controller.

Speedrunners is kind of amazing. I broke it down a bit in the Steam thread:

I just played an hour of the Speedrunners beta. I had a really good time.

- It's a 4 player competitive platformer. The goal is to run off the screen and leave the others behind.
- Multiple paths, powerup pickups, traps
- You have a rope and can swing on certain material
- It's not built in flash. It just looks like it.
- It feels good.

You have to manage the level and watch your step, all while trying to slow down the others. You will have to learn levels as you play, and pick the right route to help you win. Some contain boosts, while others have pickups like remote mines and Scorpion-like hooks. There are also switches that can close up parts of the route, screwing over the ones behind you.

This game has a chance to be something special. I hope they plan on having a wide selection of levels, and hopefully even a level editor.

More specifically, Mount Your Friends is a physics based competitive climbing game where what you climb is each other. Each player takes a turn climbing to the top of a tower of previous climbers (and a goat) trying to make the new highest point before time runs out. If someone runs out of time before reaching the top, they're eliminated. This is a game that is simple to get into, but the more you play it, the more nuanced your strategies become. Adept competitors can create massive towers by flinging themselves faster than simple climbing methods can attain. Of course, there's also the humor of seeing your ragdoll climbers fall all the way down a tower!

If I could take a moment to double recommend something that is on the OP, Humans Must Answer is well worth your time. It's a really well put together shooter with a very nice level of customization and rewarding difficulty (if you play on the one they recommend at least). It has a greater focus on smart use of your weapons and on these gun drones you can drop rather then just dodging a tsunami of bullets which definitely makes it memorable for me.

It wasnt a huge surprise that Gods will be watching ran away with the voting, but seeing Super Splatters and Magrunner in the top spaces was awesome and weird at the same time. Speaks for their quality that they managed to outgun games that have non-paid versions (especially MagRunner at $20). Both are really great games.

So that's the first time I've ever heard of Octopus City Blues. Looks wild.

It left me feeling weird though because I love the music and the art style (closest thing ive ever seen to Chrono Trigger in the technical sense) and what seems like the insanity of it, but at the same time I have no idea what it's about other than the fact that its an adventure game, and I find the entire website terrible to read through, which is a bad sign for a game centered around narrative. Hopefully it'll clear up later.

But what makes WF special is that the boss learns and adapts to your tactics. Focus all your fire at its front and the next iteration will be more heavily armored in the front. Get killed by lasers? The next boss will be brimming with laser turrets. Each boss grows bigger, more menacing, armed with more weapons, until your tiny ship is facing off against a screen filling monstrosity. Every boss is randomly generated according to your own tactics and performance. How long can you survive?

It's an innovative formula that I'm surprised never caught on. I remember many sites praising the game when it first came out. Even IGN had an article on it back in '07. I still play the game today and it is still challenging after all these years.

Word of advice: the controls are a bit weird. Z is to fire (and select menu options), X is for slow more precise movement, D activates an aiming mode that allows you to aim at the boss as you move and alters the spread of your fire. F pauses. Arrow keys move.

The most recent version (2012) on the download page has gamepad support, haven't tried it yet.

Facade was the game that introduced me to indies, but it was Warning Forever that cemented my passion for these obscure inventive titles. Warning Forever is a bullet hell SHMUP with a cool vector graphics style. But it's not like any other SHUMP you've played. This is the David and Goliath version: just your tiny ship against one boss. You have your rapid fire weapon and your reflexes and you must survive. You can target parts of the enemy and blow it apart piece by piece.

But what makes WF special is that the boss learns and adapts to your tactics. Focus all your fire at its front and the next iteration will be more heavily armored in the front. Get killed by lasers? The next boss will be brimming with laser turrets. Each boss grows bigger, more menacing, armed with more weapons, until your tiny ship is facing off against a screen filling monstrosity. Every boss is randomly generated according to your own tactics and performance. How long can you survive?

It's an innovative formula that I'm surprised never caught on. I remember many sites praising the game when it first came out. Even IGN had an article on it back in '07. I still play the game today and it is still challenging after all these years.

Word of advice: the controls are a bit weird. Z is to fire (and select menu options), X is for slow more precise movement, D activates an aiming mode that allows you to aim at the boss as you move and alters the spread of your fire. F pauses. Arrow keys move.

The most recent version (2012) on the download page has gamepad support, haven't tried it yet.

Cool write up and I agree that its definitely a game worth playing.
