New 3DS System Update (StreetPass Relay Feature)

So now that the Wii U also acts as a Nintendo Zone hotspot will those also work as a relay?

I'm in work and I haven't had notification of the update yet. I generally do get SpotPass updates just walking around town or even getting the bus straight home so I should get a decent amount of StreetPasses once everyone updates.

Another excuse to go spend £3 on a coffee.

Fuck there are two of these in my tiny little Swedish town :D

edit: Also the US hotspot finder seems broken, could only get the UK one to work.

Not a bad little walking circuit for me. This'll get the 10 coins and potentially a few StreetPasses. I live near the top left marker.

I've already been getting tons of hits since the new streetpass games became available. Now, since i walk past like 10 or 15 starbucks on a given day I should easily hit the 10 cap every day, maybe even twice per day if i'm out and about shopping, assuming i have time to clear it out in-between.

So yeah, now the real problem is the 10 hit cap, 300 coin cap and 10 coins per day cap... it's kinda frustrating when you know you can easily get tons more but are artificially restricted -__-

Went to both a McDonalds and a Starbucks this morning (both have Nintendo Zones), and didn't get anything.

At least now I know that I'm the biggest nerd in an town of 50,000 people.

It's going to take time for people to download the update and go out and try this.

I might take one for the team later on when picking up Dragon's Crown and hit up a few spots to get things started for people in my area. Sad to say but there are probably a dozen McDonald's within normal driving distance of my house. I might even make a game of it by routing it on google maps and then timing myself driving there with splits.

Is there any way to know whether or not your data has been successfully collected? I don't want to have to go in these places once or twice per week to get streetpasses.

I just checked some big cities on the german nintendo zone map, looks like that shit is only for hotels and some random little restaurants, I have not found any Mc Donalds or something like that which is listed on the map.

Do only Mc Donalds in the US have that nintendo zone thingy?

Wtf...I thought you could get more than one at a hotspot. One at a time?! And 10 limit a day?!

Really regretting picking up those street pass games.

This is gonna be good. There are so many hotspots here in the UK. Every McDonald's, Cafe Nero and Punch Taverns pub for a start. Even if you're in a small town, I bet you've got about 5 hotspots locally.

I think Greggs has The Cloud wifi. No excuses now.

Nice, it probably won't work straight away until more people go through those hotspots for the first time. I have 5 in my city. Hopefully that means I'll get some more often. It was 1 mostly in the past, and that didn't happen everyday either.

I tried to do this at mcdonalds twice and the Zone thing never works. It was two different mcdonalds.

I've managed to connect to two Nintendo Zones before (both times were a real struggle, too), but my GF's 3DS just refuses, and gives up with an error message.

She can connect to the internet at home, and she gets street/spot passes, but when she tries to connect to a Nintendo Zone the wireless goes from "Streetpass" to "Internet" with no signal at all. As soon as she gives up, BAM back to full strength.

Really annoying as she's not been able to get any of the Animal Crossing bonus downloads.

I'm gonna set up a guest network on my router to fake a Nintendo Zone at some point, just so we can get the chance to connect.

Wonder if this update could improve this?

Almost every pub in my area seems to have a Nintendo Zone (or, at least it says it does on the 3DS), plus we have a McDonalds basically backing onto our garden, so I'm hoping this will help us get some of those darn pink puzzle pieces.

What are the daily limitations on Streetpasses? I thought it was 10 Mii's at a time, not 10 Mii's per day.

I'm clearly out of touch.

I can confirm that you will get the most recent streetpass data even if you have recently streetpassed that person before. Me and my fiancee streetpassed each other, then I took both of our 3DSs to Mcdonalds. I ended up getting her streetpass from the hotspot (and she got nothing) even thought it was only 1-2 hours since we had last streetpassed.

Oh. That's pretty interesting.

Anyone find it odd the press release said firmware 6.2.0- 0U or higher. That means the feature was waiting for the switch on at Nintendo's end. Or it means that was a typo as the Nintendo UK site says 12...

I hope I don't run into the problem of multiple people doing the same Nintendo zone tours (laps or circuits might be a better term) and so ending up with 6 spots=1 pass as you pass the same person 6 times filling up 6/10 on the queue (but if it is 6 hi fives and instant level 6 Mii that would be interesting...).

Given the fact it is implied to be per game (i.e. is not limited to 12 titles so downloads title by title) I hope this means people will rotate games more (personally, I do not have 12 games yet but I am sure some have had to remove some titles).

... how would your phone know how to get and send the data?
I assume the 3DS connects to the web via the Nintendo Zones and sends/checks data at a web URL where the URL is specific to that zone (I can not imagine it being hardware attached to thousands of pre-existing routers). But I wouldn't want to walk about and eat a data allowance on having an unsecured wifi point wandering around,

But like others have said you only get 1 pass, you just give people a chance to pass where they lacked it.

I'm kinda confused, everyone says that you connect to zones in sleep mode. How come when I want to try to get promo stuff (Animal Crossing items, for example) and I open the 3DS up and manually connect I always get errors? It's really weird.

I went to a McDonald's for breakfast. I had my 3DS standing vertically in my bag so I could watch and wait for the green illumination. Nothing.

Maybe I'm the first one go through there with the update?

Has anyone actually gotten this to work yet?

Hmm... Now I'm tempted to go on a tour-o-Nintendo Zone and hit as many places in my area that have one setup as I can.

I bring mine to work and when I park next to my friend, the light on the system turns green within seconds. I get 4-5 Streetpasses a day just letting it sit in my car.
Protips in this thread. I have gotten a streetpasses in my car but I never thought about using my car as a beacon. Good to know.

I'm too embarrassed to carry my 3DS out in the open so I just leave it in my backpack. I don't take my backpack everywhere though, so this would be a good way of potentially getting more StreetPasses. If it worked, of course.

Learn to love the man purse.

Hint: No one cares about you and they're focused on their life and problems. You learn that as you get older. I'm 32 and play my flame red 3DS on the subway daily and no one cares.
I play my 3DS on the subway, though not all the time. I have felt older men and women glaring at me and sometime it feels better to just blend in. As much as possible I try to ignore this though. It is not unusual to see 10+ people in a subway car playing cell phone games and yet I should feel embarrassed about playing my 3DS? Blah.

Yippee! Though will I know if its a Nintendo Zone pass? I love seeing that green light and then observing my surroundings, "which one of these people is a nerd just like me?"
Lol, I have the same reaction every time. It makes me wonder if there is a time delay. It is only extremely rarely that I can tell who I have tagged with.

It seems appropriate that in the week that Relay goes live I have my worst Streetpass week in months.

At least I can take comfort in the fact that my Mii is the king of dozens of control-points.

I'm still not sure whether I'm tagging the relays or whether I'm just tagging other people as they're trying to use the relays. First relay I walked past, I got a tag. Second relay, no tag. Walked past the first relay the next day, no tag. Went back to the first relay 8 hours later and stood there for 2 minutes till I got a tag, but I also got a tag from someone else at the exact same minute on my other system that I never installed the update on, so maybe it was just a couple people walked by at that moment. I wish there were some way to tell.

Given the streetpass data is essentially submitted online to a repository run by Nintendo this makes me wonder if they are going to bother data mining it. Then again there probably is not a lot you can do (if the zone were guaranteed geotagged then you could do things like look at spread of puzzle pieces*). Still expect next shareholders meeting for a section on Mii shirt colour popularity or something simpler (we'll get some usage stat like "over a million Miis have been uploaded therefore a million streetpasses that would have never happened, did happen")

*-As in you could see if there are regional blackspots for certain pieces. But without geotagging it becomes too arbitrary and a dry x% of relay stations have never seen y puzzle pieces or z games.

I also got a tag from someone else at the exact same minute on my other system that I never installed the update on, so maybe it was just a couple people walked by at that moment. I wish there were some way to tell.
What firmware is this non-updated 3DS? Nintendo is conflicted in weather it works on all versions above 6 or all versions above 6.xxxx.12. If it below 6 then it was certainly not a relay but if it is <6.xxx.12 then it might still be.

Also apparently the 8 hour rule does not apply to relay. This makes me think Mii rating is also impossible.

Looks like I have 3 tags already today and I haven't even left the train station yet.

Seems like it's up and active.

I'm also having a better day than usual. Can't say which ones came from the relay though... or if I'm just luckily bumping to other users.

A totally useless update for those outside the US/Canada.

Not happy in the slightest. Oh, well. Enjoy it, guys

England has it, at least London. I got the Nintendo Zone app there when I went in vacation last winter.
Not in Spain though, so no its installed and useless. Nintendo España, is not so hard to put some godamn nintendo zones at the mcdonalds of the big cities.
I usually get 2 or 3 streetpasses when walking downtown of my city, Nintendo Zones would work great there.

10/10 in the plaza

I need to find somewhere to spend 45 minutes on the new Streetpass games.

7 Animal Crossing hits too. I can't handle all this.

How many relay points did you go through? Is it busy where you are? Have you used public transport?

Working great in Croydon, UK. Got 8 yesterday and normally get 1-2 if I'm lucky. Just doing a huge loop of town on my lunch hour to try and hit most of the spots in one go

There are a load of relays in the centre of Birmingham. I got 3 on the train/station. The rest have come from walking around a bit.

Just initate the Mii Plaza and have the Miis walk through your gate. Once you've done that much the system will store an additional that that you can access once you're done with the first group.

Remember not to close the Plaza app or you lose the 10 that are already through the gate.

Nice. Clearly I've never had enough tags to do this before.

I think I'm up to 193 all-time now, so I'll attempt to get to 200 before the end of the day.
