Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | August 2013 | Divekicks & Dragons

The Vita is an awesome system and Sony clearly doesn't have any plans of abandoning it, but look at how well their renewed PSP push worked (around when LPB/AC, etc were announced), I think it's an unavoidable reality that the amrket for their handheld is kind of slim, but the fact that they're continuously reiterating PS4 comparability is both a necessary evil to keep the platform going, and a sign that they aren't planning to just cut and run from it.

It seemed to go pretty well in Europe and Japan obviously needed no help. SCEA's PSP failure probably stems from them sticking to $169/199 for years. They introduced that price point with the PSP 2000 (so that was either 2006 or 2007) and didn't budge until 2011, likely as an attempt at price protecting PSPgo. The fact that 2009 was a big year with PSPgo, PS3 Slim, and Uncharted 2 probably didn't help things.

What on earth are you trying to argue here? That Sony shouldn't have had any of its internal developer (who you keep holding up as the gold standard for 1st party support) make launch games? That doing a launch game is some kind of insult to the developer?

Sorry, but that's utterly ridiculous. In spite of the challenges, developers generally see getting to do a launch game a rare opportunity to expand their audience due to the lack of competition.

...yes because the rich storytelling is the reason why people buy Killzone games. And if anything, Mercenary is far more tied to the original games than Shadow Fall, taking place alongside them (and from the looks of it revisiting some of the same locations).

I was arguing the point that Sony wasn't giving these game everything they needed and correct me if I'm wrog but I was under the impression that people tend to harp on Gurrellia's lack of lore building.

Have ya'll seen Atomic Ninjas? This video popped up on YouTube for me and it looks quite fun. Not sure what to compare it to, it has a 2D platform brawler feel but it's got some interesting mechanics. PS3/Vita exclusive I think

Check it out

Is there a way to erase Vita save files? For example, I have a long list of multiple saves in Atelier Totori that I want to trim down but I can't find the option in-game. Is there a way to delete the save files using the Vita OS?

Last point first - that "For some reason" is because the PS3 has a huge installed base - The Last of Us sold, what, 3+ million in the first month world wide? It wouldn't have sold that on PS4 or on Vita in the same time frame, not even close. It's the same reason GT6 is coming to PS3 - and also how long do you think these titles have been in development? Beyond, GT6, Last of Us etc - if they've been in development for YEARS why would they postpone the release or refuse to greenlight them in the hope of putting them on consoles that didn't, at the time, exist? THINK man.

As for your Killzone concerns it strikes me that you're contradicting yourself - you claim that people have no interest in the brand and are looking at it simply because the Vita has no software, yet in the same breath say it's being sent to die against.. another Killzone game? That series that people have no interest in?

Now for your lists - why compare a market that's changed? 2006 and 2013 look VERY different - you know, since digital downloads became a big thing? Why not post a list of digital download titles as well? Or would that go against your "SONY SUX VITA HAS NO GAMES" diatribe that you love to spout?

The reasoning you gave is what a third party would say. Sony isn't a third party and given that Heavy Rain, and Gran Turismo 5 shipped in 2010 those developers were aware that both Vita and PS4 were coming.

As for Killzone the lack of marketing will hurt any chances of the game picking up casual attention in a "I'd like to play a good quality shooter" kind of way. Shadowfall will strain the already existing Killzone fanbase.

For a number of reasons I left out the PSN exclusive releases. Firstly, due to the nature of digital releases it's impossible for me to give a definitive statement. Some games could slip into the next year, or get announced a week before launch. I feel pretty confident that outside of another cheapo Collection port that's all SCEA is putting out at retail in 2013. Secondly, it's quite unfair to PSP as that platform didn't have a digital storefront until 2009. Given there's only two PSP 2006 releases it'd consider likely candidates for DD-only status it's probably safe to say PSP would've had even more support that year rather than the same amount spread through different distribution methods. Lastly, and more importantly the DD-only games don't exist to a customer until they've already bought the platform. Honestly, SCEA's current 2013 Vita DD-only list isn't very impressive either:

Bentley's Hackpack (multiplatform)
Epic Mickey 2 (port)
Open Me! (original)
Jacob Jones (multiplatform)
Pinball Heroes Complete (port)
Toro's Friend Network (original)
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault (port)
Table Mini Golf (original)
Ecolibrium (original)
Flower (port)
Metrico (original)
Destiny of Spirits (original)

Especially if you take into consideration the quality of some of these releases ... Not so coincidently none of Vita's original games (retail or PSN-only) came from a North American studio. SCEA didn't release a single port on PSP in 2006, or PS3 in 2008. Ports make up a huge margin of their 2013 Vita release lineup.

Anyone using the PDP Trigger Grips? Is the grip material wearing off for ya?

EDIT: anyone using the Official PSVita In-Ear Headset? The one with mic. How is it?

I finally downloaded Ragnarok Odyssey's demo, and I have to say it's exactly what I expected from Monster Hunter. It's fast-paced and doesn't bore me to tears with tedious junk (at least from what the demo showed). If Ace releases here, or if I can find it cheap, I'll definitely pick it up. Hopefully it'll go on PS+.

I use that and I really like it. Though, I should say I'm no audiophile and I haven't really used the mic yet. But they are the best sounding earbuds I've ever owned.

Gungho's US division confirmed that they'll be releasing Ragnark Odyssey Ace in North America as a PSN only release.

I hope for the day that the Vita can play all the PS2 Classics (I missed out on some truely great games)

And PSP too... Sigh Crisis Core sigh

Having played Crisis core, it really isn't that great, so you are not missing out much. I'd much rather get Type-0 or Kingdom Hearts:BBS, but you know, Square-Enix.

Please please please dragon's crown come today!

Why can't we have nice things from the PSP era.
I hate you SCEA.

Where's my Crisis Core?
Where's my Mega Man Powered Up?

---

AHAHAHA, Pachter says Vita is dead:
OMG vita will sell gazillions!

by referring to, do you mean the ones I've purchased?

I think what I'm trying to explain is that I don't spend a lot of money buying new games that come out on PSN for the Vita. I play what I get on PS+ and I buy a FEW games (Hotline Miami is the only one I can think of actually). But things like Superfrog HD...... I just don't understand.

I did purchase a few games for myself at the launch and last Christmas, but that's it.

(about to sleep so that's all until tomorrow)
People like to try different games, i'm one of them, sure i'm not happy with all my purchases(for example tokyo jungle mobile, i played one time and never touched again, damn you gaf!), but i like most of them.

Just one thing, ok on gaf i learned that superfrog it's not for everyone, especially the ones that are too used to mario-esque games, and i'm ok with people who buy it and say that they don't like it, but what does it have that repels people like you? It seems like that people look at it and says WTFITS?

I mean i saw people adoring that broken shit of life of a pixel, or thomas was alone that has literally nothing behind all that "artistic" smoke and mirrors, or kung fu rabbit that is really good looking and it's a good little game but it's nothing great and imo not that fun(i could go on with other examples), but they won't even consider a good game like superfrog? It's really weird if you ask me.

Maybe it's all early shitty screenshots' fault that make people think that it still looks like shit(and infact i was really worried and depressed at the time), but the final game is really good looking and on the oled those colors really shine.

I just want to understand what makes a gaffer saying "i want it" looking at life of a pixel or thomas was alone and saying "bleah" looking at superfrog.

Type-0 too!
hmm is KH:BBS... gonna be in any of the KH HD ReMix?

I do hope the KH HD ReMixes come to the Vita too

I had fun with it and got the Plat. Onl because of the online though. Way mroe fun online.

Soul Sacrifice is a lot better though if you havn't played it. Also God Eater is great to.

I also find monster hunter really boring.

Is any KH game anywhere available digitally ?

Because i think even collection is retail only so it seems like there might be a bigger problem with licence on KH from Disney here at work.

The next remix collection is going to be KH2: Final Mix, Birth by Sleep and the cutscenes from Coded. So you can play it there in the future.

Doubt the HD collections will ever hit Vita though.

No, unfortunately, neither Crisis Core nor KH for the PSP is available digitally.

There's some phone games and a browser thing available but none of the real games are available digitally. Square Enix will have to fix that though, because PS4 requires DD releases.

Mobile games would probably have separate license agreements since those are't consoles per definition.

And required or not if SE asks for exception it will probably be granted exception for game with 5 milions+ potential.

Well isn't Floating Cloud God just all sorts of adorable and oddly compelling?

There is one problem... it lacks the original soundtrack. :(

The framerate seems to also randomly dip which can be a bit of a bother.

Bummer but i guess the music not been there wouldn't surprise me since it has been years since it came out.

Hmm might buy it if it's really cheap.
Let's see what my urge makes me do. XD

As someone who also dislikes MH's slow combat, I found RO to be one of the worst hunting games I've ever played, mostly because of its insanely low drop rate that you'll have to suffer through if you want a decent late/post-game equipment set. I don't know if Ace will fix the problem, but I wouldn't recommend the game to anyone the way it is now. Have you tried the Soul Sacrifice demo?

So I just returned to work after 3 weeks of summer holiday, been spending lots of time on the sofa (weather was bad), so My Vita became a good friend..

Played the Killzone Mercenary peview build ALOT.. loved it.
And Everybody´s Golf is just perfect for small gameplay sessions.. really fun game.
and then I got Lego LOTR from my PSN Plus sub. At first I thought the game was bad, terrible camera and the buttons did not react very well.. but after a while I got hooked on the game, so much that I ended up getting the Platinum trophy. lol.

Omg, it's finally Dragon's Crown day for me!

I'm so envious :(
I'm starting to be really worried, on internet i can find only people saying how fast are vgp deliveries, some even less than one week, in my case it's 2 weeks and still nothing, i hope no one stolen my precious dragon's crown game + artbook :(

Fruit Ninja is apparently releasing on US PSN for the Vita this week.
I wonder if it will top the August charts? Well that'd depend on its price...

How did YoSP treat you during the vacation? anyways you haven't played the 'review copy' of Mercenary yet?

As much as I like Fruit Ninja on my phone, on Vita I prefer Mortal Kombat's Test Your Slice challenges. :p

So my Vita from the Cowboom sale last week arrives today. Hoping it's not too scratched up. Would ideally like to wait until Gamescom, but probably just going to bite the bullet and get a 32gb tomorrow. The system is pretty much useless without a memory card, correct? Don't think I can wait that long.

Couple of quick questions:

1. What's the best shooter on the Vita? Killzone looks great, but need something for the time being. Love the Resistance series, but haven't heard great things about Burning Skies.

2. Does PixelJunk MonstersHD warrant a purchase if I already have the PSP and PS3 versions? How are the touch controls?

3. Never finished Persona 3 and not sure it was even clicking with me. Should I even attempt Persona4

I found some new and cool info about Freedom Wars. Here is the link.

I really hope it is the last attempt for making a Monster Hunter killer, seriously. The game looks nice, but the Vita has / is going to have: Ragnarok Odyssey, Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, God Eater and Freedom Wars. I seriously want more RPGs and less hunting games.
____

Is there any release date un EU for Ys Celceta and Muramasa Rebirth?

I know you weren't directing this exactly towards me, but instead towards many others on GAF, but I do want to not that I've never commented on or bought/played Thomas Was Alone.

For something like Superfrog HD, I wouldn't ever buy it because it's not something that appeals to me, I suppose. It's just.. another fuckin' platformer. It may be a remake or something of an old game and that's fine, but old games were simple and this one won't be much different.

Superfrog HD seems like something that's GOOD, but not GREAT. I can't see myself putting a ton of time into it. I know it may be different for others.
I really dislike spending money on something that I'm not totally sure about, that's all.

Even with something like Dragon Crown.. I'm fairly interested in it, but not enough so to justify the price they are asking for it (without cross-buy too); the framerate issues I've heard about add to that (honestly, if they'd spent a little more time optimizing the port then the game would probably not have that problem). Of course, some absolutely love platformers like DC and don't care about framerate issues; sure, they should go ahead and buy it if it's worth the money. But if it's a game you want and you feel short on money, it's not something you need to buy right away. I'm sure it will be on sale at some store to ten or twenty dollars cheaper at some point, and that'd be a great time to get it.

It seems to me that you are not the type of gamer who tries different things. There are plenty of people who do, that's why they buy all sorts of games. And there are plenty of different games to try on the Vita.

IMO, if you stick only to games that you typically play, or only games that other people say are 'exceptional', your gaming experience is lesser because of it. There is a lot of different stuff, a lot of different gameplay experiences that are worth trying that doesn't fall into that category.

I don't have a specific game genre that I like (just as with music). It's not that I don't like trying different things, but games like Superfrog aren't going to different. It's nothing innovative; it's nothing that I haven't seen before. I feel my gaming experience is beyond acceptable and it saddens me that you'd judge that for me.

Superfrog was a classic platformer for the Amiga, so it makes sense that people will want an HD remake.

You just don't buy many games. That's fine. Some people do. I have about 75 Vita games and I'm happy with about 80% of them, and extremely happy with a good 60%. I have broad game interests (on the western side at least).

I noticed a couple of times you specifically mentioned the Vita that you don't buy many games for. Is it that way with other platforms, or is it only the Vita that you wait for "exceptional titles" before you make the purchase?

"extremely happy with a good 60%" is definitely the type of person I am.. I don't want to invest money in a game that I'm not going to be very happy with, so I only get a game if I'm sure I'll be extremely happy with it.

Call me crazy, but I've only purchased 5 games (all currently installed or on game card) for the Vita. I have 13 total (installed), with PS+. I've owned the Vita since launch day.

I don't ever use my PS3 (I own 3 games for it). I do want to get The Last of Us, Journey, possible Uncharted 2/3, but that's all. I have a PC that I invest a lot of my time into, and even a $3 purchase (Just Cause 2) can go a LONG way with sales on Steam (I've put 52 hours into it). I suppose I expect the console experience on handheld.. not graphics-wise, but gameplay wise. And I shouldn't, but I do.
To be clear, I don't look down on even a single person for buying a shitload of games on the Vita; I suppose I just don't understand it.

TL;DR: I want Monster Hunter

Having a problem with my Vita: I am unable to access the PSP options screen (bilinear Filtering/Color Correction/Controls Mapping) when playing PSP compatible games. No matter how much or where I touch my screen and hold it down, this options menu does not appear.

I've already reset my Vita several times by holding down the start button and waiting for it to power down, but nothing has improved upon re-start.

Is there another way to access these options other than holding down the screen?

Does touchscreen work in OS ?
I think i had it once or twice when it stopped registering touches but that was repaired with turning Vita off and restarting.

They moved it. Hold down the PS button and it appears there.

Wow.. was this a well-known change, because this the first time I've heard of it.

Anyway, thanks for the tip!

I believe after you update to the newest system firmware, the first time you run a psp game, there is a message that popped up informing you of the change. But I guess a lot of people just skip the message lol.

1. Wait for killzone, otherwise Unit 13 is pretty good but a 3rd person shooter, and was free with ps+ just last month

The reasoning you gave is what a third party would say. Sony isn't a third party and given that Heavy Rain, and Gran Turismo 5 shipped in 2010 those developers were aware that both Vita and PS4 were coming.

I don't dispute your point - but I'm not sure Sony is in a position to risk a brand new, high profile, big budget IP on the Vita. Puppeteer or Rain, however, would be perfect and those two, especially coming out of Japan, seem particularly strange due to their absence.

I think it's also worth mentioning the nature of exclusives in general - especially third party ones - since the days of the PSP. Most of Sony's exclusives on PS3 were games they themselves produced. Ports aren't bad - ports, especially of good games, can drive system adoptions (if they're top tier or excellent version) but the majority are simply nice to bolster the library.

I'm not sure I believe Vita will ever have a system seller - though in my opinion neither does the 3DS. It has some excellent games, certainly, but for me there's not one title that screams "Holy shit I need a 3DS" - maybe pokemon will be that? I don't know - but systems now rely, and need, a strong library of titles, rather than one or two "WOW" games.

I'm confident, though, that there are a number of SCEE, SCEA and, maybe, SCEJ studios working on Vita games... Well.. I hope so. I see Shahid doing a lot of hard work, no-one can deny that, but I don't see much in the way from SCEA.
