Can't deal with not seeing this movie in theatre anymore. Going to a matinee showing tomorrow, friends who don't want to come be damned.

I'm currently in Beijing right now visiting and I keep seeing ads for this all over the place. It's making me smile quite a bit. Loved the film (saw it when it came out) so seeing it anywhere else is awesome.

Has anyone here read the comic? Saw the movie earlier today, was a fun ass movie, and I was very entertained. I'd like to get more backstory into the universe but I don't know how I feel about paying $20 for it on comixology.

Can't find the original source, but still funny as hell.

So I don't get out to the movies much with a 1 year old, and the what not. Last movie I got to see with the SO was Star Trek. So we have a chance to go have a date night this friday, and hardly anywhere is playing this now. I'm so bummed out now.

Yep. Movie is printing money in South Korea and China and bombing in Japan. Just wtf is going on.

I talked about this in a previous post, but the movie is not being advertised at all in some parts of Japan. I finally got a chance to see it today, and there were huge posters for WWZ, some Lone Ranger stands, and ads for plenty of other movies at the theater. There wasn't even a poster for Pacific Rim. The mall I saw it at was packed, and I'd say the (mid-sized) theater was almost half full. Granted, this was at 1pm in the afternoon, but it's summer vacation, and there were a ton of folks seeing movies. If this movie survives in Japan, it's going to be on word of mouth alone.

It was an awesome movie though. Glad I could finally see it!

Well considering that Evangelion 3.0 did 60 million in Japanese box office just last year PR should have audience.
Its a new franchise with no movie stars and Del Toro is not well known.

Kinda weird that they screwed the marketing in japan of all places. Well let's hope that it has good word of mouth. Some movies tend to have pretty good legs in Japan (Iron Man 3 opened with only about 4 million but crossed over 25 million in the end).

Kikuchi is not a star in Japan? We don't have that many major hollywood movies with Japanese actress in main role. Also as far as dubbing cast goes PR has pretty high profile cast in Japan. Don't know if this affects the box office perfomance that much though. Also unknown cast and director didn't hinder the movie elsewhere in Asia so kinda weird if it would in Japan.

Well there's Mana Ashida (who's popular) the little girl in the flash back, but she's only in the movie for a few minutes. Guess the poster saying that no one likes Rinko Kikuchi in Japan was true afterall. Even when they showed clips of the movie on TV, it was mainly focused on Mana Ashida, they barely acknowledge Rinko. Should have gone with Abe Hiroshi as the co-star! Terumae Romae the movie he was in last year made over 74 Million in Japan, 2nd biggest movie at the box office in 2012.

I finally saw this on Sunday, and I was shocked how much I liked it. Its got a ton of cheese but its a good cheese. The soundtrack was great also. Im shocked this isnt doing better in America, its so much better than any of the Transformers movies.

Interviews with Charlie and Rinko at 1:20
Edit: Beaten
The only justice would be a sequel which dumped American and Japanese robots and pilots and concentrated on upgraded versions of Cherno and Crimson Typhoon.
This. Please also the debut of the Mexican Jaeger and give South Korea one too, they have high numbers (and maybe UK, just because they helped, even if it's not in the Pacific.)

Will there be a Director's Cut with more time spent on the other 3 or 4 jagers? I felt like they and their crews just got robbed on screen time. I feel like they collectively got about 5 minutes on screen.

It is Hellboy 2 all over again.

All those awesome designs and interesting characters to appear only for 5 minutes =(

Went and saw it again this time with my gf. I was shocked that she liked it. I mean she said she really liked it. The whole thing. She especially liked the acting of the little girl. I was able to take in the last fight a bit better this time around, whereas the first time I was a bit overwhelmed by the hk fight and could not take in anymore.

Don't know this has been posted yet. Guillermo, Rinko, Mana on Odaiba Tour [Youtube]

Guillermo del Toro geeking out over a Gundam exhibition. Very nice to see them so excited and it definitely brought a smile to my face.

Really wish I got to see this a second time in the cinema. But unfortunately, it seemed to exit cinemas fairly quick here in Northern Ireland. Nothing to do now, except wait for the Bluray!

I saw it an hour ago and it was EPIC. Definitely the best summer movie of 2013.
I loved every single moment of it and I can't wait for blu-ray preorder.

I kept expecting the AI to start threatening with deadly neurotoxin.
Also, I totally
got the Prothean/Collectors vibe from those aliens at the end.

God this movie was so fucking dumb. I expected more from Del Toro. I'm never going in blind again. This movie suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked. I don't even know where to start when complaining about it. meh.

Chronological order is a good way to organize things.

Willyfive I'm not sure if you're being smarky or actually want me to list out all the points I disliked about the movie. If it's the latter I don't have that kind of time. Instead, I will tell you the one and only thing that was excellent in the movie. The CGI. That's it. But hey, if you guys like watching robots do WWE wrestling moves on giant beasts for no real reason then have at it. Personally I think this could have been a pretty cool fantasy movie if Toro used some of the story telling skills that i know he has, but he didn't and everything short of how it looked flopped hard. Sucks too because I actually love pretty much all of his movies.

JetBlackPanda- I'm not sure why that matters, but the three most recent movies I've watched were Star Trek: Into Darkness, Evil Dead, and World War Z and I liked them all to varying extents.

Like I said I was just curious I also enjoyed all of these and I loved Pacific Rim to death.

I'm noticing a lot of people loved it so maybe I'm just old or something. I usually overlook goofy plot holes / flaws and appreciate a movie for what it is but I just couldn't this time around. I love del Toro movies usually, so I'm not sure what happened here. The man is a fantastic story teller and this movie did NOT have a cool story. I guess what I'm getting at is if the same amount of love was applied to the rest of the movie as had been applied to the CGI, this would have been an instant classic. Instead it was completely goofy, nonsensical, had ridiculous characters and a story that seemed like 2 minutes of thought was put into it. Super disappointed. :(

Pacific Ris muuuuuch better than Star Trek, IMO. Star Trek's ridiculousness felt out of place, while PR's ridiculousness felt like it meshed well with the atmosphere and overall feel of the movie.

American jaeger, Thats why. Dell Toro and Co. Went to do some unfavorite decisions with PR. It was meant for domestic public. And it failed. It has no pull outside.
What? No one knew any of that till it released. It's doing phenomenally in China in spite of Crimson Typhoon well, yeah. It wasn't marketed much or very well and had too much competition in Japan.

Edit: I heard they avoided having many scenes in Japan due to the earthquake. So it's not really Del Toros fault.

Edit: actually I'll just say the Japanese general movie going public sucks just like the us, they're seeing their own Grown Ups 2.

What I didn't like about the movie:

1. The story. The backstory introduction sequence was a lot more interesting than the actual story of the movie.

2. The actors, or at least the main character. He was terrible; I couldn't relate to him at all because he couldn't portray any kind of emotion whatsoever. The Commander also had a bad actor; he had no gravitas whatsoever on his role, and felt like he was just poorly playing the part of someone who was more interesting than he made it out to be.

3. The Australian pilot son. He was awful, and his story ended in a poor way. Actual spoilers here:
His father should have been the one that died, not him. It cheated the character out of redemption by having him die.

I still greatly enjoyed the movie though.

The third one's pretty brilliant if you think about it. What do you do if a pilot's drunk with power?
Make him a Jaeger Bomb.
