what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Ni no Kuni

Game looks glorious in motion and the japanese dub seems great. Really enjoying the combat system and game world so far too.

Playing Persona 3 FES and I'm currently 50 hours in- most of that time has been spent through fusions and trying to get the s.links. I'm really hyped up for Persona 4 now- when I eventually pick it up, I'll have to go with the ps2 version though.

I think I'm one of the few here on GAF that prefers 3 FES over 4 .

Indeed it looks superb . At 20 hours now , and I'm at the part where I need to recover 3 stones . 1/3 done , and presently at the glittering grotto level 38, 36 and 35 .

Am I halfway done ?

Right now I am wrapping up my three year long playthrough of FFVIII. Have had it since Christmas '10, but I haven't finished it because I have had thousands of problems actually playing it. When I bought it, I didn't have a PS3, so I had to use my PS2. Well, the PS1 memory card that I had didn't work right, so I had to buy a new one. Then my PS2 wouldn't read the disks well at all. So I just stopped for a while.

Demon's Souls

(yeah not a real jRPG but still)

20+ hours in and I managed to kill only 2 bosses so far (Phalanx, Fool's Idol).

I am simply awed and humbled by this game. My personal best PS3 title and best RPG in over 20 years of me playing RPGs and 150 RPGs beaten.

I've been playing Etrian Odyssey IV these last two days and I'm surprised at how rich in content the game is. It's been really fun (first time playing a game in this series).

I've decided I would try to wrap up some of my Tales backlog before getting into Xillia, so right now I'm playing Tales of the Abyss on 3DS. I'll follow that up with Vesperia and finish off the future arc of Graces f.

ff3 on android (worst control scheme), last remnant (steam,... think I'd stop...., the walking animation is weird), xenoblade (it's going to take a while to finish this....)

Replaying FF7, just finished Disc 1, first time replaying it to the end in over 10 years. Having vague recollections of the plot makes all the hints they drop throughout, all the more interesting.

One thing I'm noticing is that the oddball Materia are too expensive, like Mystify and Sleep, they shouldn't cost around 10000 that early on, they should be cheap so you would consider trying them out since Sleep does work on a few bosses.

Against my better judgement, I started played ToX, so my current rpg rundown is:

Wii: Xenoblade
Wii U: Earthbound
PS3: Tales of Xillia
3DS: Tales of the Abyss/ Paper Mario Sticker Star
DS: Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon

I want to finish up Shadow Dragon next. Seems much harder than any other FEs I've played.

Resonance of Fate on PS3: Loving it until the fucking
escort
mission. I don't know is level really that important in this game, but I'll grind anyway since I don't have enough money to retry.

Parasite Eve on Vita: Got this on PSN on sale. Haven't play this in a decade. Reminded me how much I love PS1 era Squaresoft.

Resonance of Fate is awesome duders. On Chapter
12
now.

Great combat, awesome music (Sakuraba's best soundtrack since Baten Kaitos Origins, and Tanaka did some good work too, love Albona's theme), fun characters and interesting story but I'm worried not everything will be elaborated on before the end. Oh and the outfit selection is great, so many to choose from without any being relegated to LOL DLC (looking at you Namco).

Just finished ToXillia, FF7, and FF8. Started Xenogears yesterday, and I'm still playing through ToGracesf, Parasite Eve 1/2, P3 FES, ToVesperia and FF6. I got a PS3 recently, so the classics PSN store might as well be physically forcing me to replay through my entire jRPG childhood.

KH1.5 comes out soon, and I plan on playing FF9, Chrono Trigger, and FFX HD when it comes out as well. I wouldn't be able to find time for next-gen by release if I wanted to.

you got any tips on the combat system ?
this has a high learning curve apparently

Final Fantasy II. I'm enjoying it except for the individual leveling mechanic. I'm sure a lot of people feel this way but I just enjoy the traditional leveling system. Is this the only FF with this?

I think I'm one of the few here on GAF that prefers 3 FES over 4 .
Proud to be one of the few. Didn't enjoy 3 as much as 4 at all. 4 is still a good game though.

Playing Xillia and really enjoying it. Been a while that I've enjoyed a jrpg. Also trying to play Totori on the vita...I don't know, but the music bothers me a lot. Rorona had a better start so far imo.

I've put SMT IV on hold and started playing Atelier Totori Plus. It's definitely one of the better jrpgs I've played in recent memory. It's like all of the good parts of Persona 4 but with battles and dungeons that flow with the rest of the game and aren't horrendously boring. I'm 16 hours in and probably a little more than half way through.

I heard the same before playing but once I started I didn't think it was very complicated at all.

First off before you actually get into real battles you're able to go to the Arena and go through an optional multi-step tutorial which explains everything. Not everything might register at first but that's OK. I think people say it has a high learning curve because there's several aspects to the combat (most of which you'll get once you get into the game), and because the combat is pretty different from anything else out there, but it's not complicated at all.

Pretty much all battles boil down to you doing scratch damage with machineguns then finishing off an enemy with direct damage using handguns or grenades (you can't finish off an enemy with scratch damage).

You've probably heard of Tri-Attacks coming up often when people talk about this game...the Tri-Attack is almost useless. It might be more useful on higher difficulties, I don't know, but I find it a lot more efficient to use a Hero Action (the action where you run fast and do flips and shit) with my machine gun user, charge up my gun as many times as needed to either break an enemy's shell before I can do more damage to it or if it doesn't have a shell, as many times as it takes to take off all or nearly all of the enemy's HP with scratch damage (you'll estimate all this easily as you fight enemies), then just finish the enemy off with a handgun/grenade. Or if I don't finish an enemy off, I can at least take off some body parts that defend the enemy's main body which allows you to deal damage to its main body (at that point is when you'll be dealing most of your damage).

Every battle has more or less the same tactic, and I heard of people saying it gets repetitive because of that, but I disagree. Many enemies have different types of resistances (I mean in terms of defending body parts and total HP, not elemental resistance) and combined with the different battlefields and enemy placements makes every battle unique. Thus I never feel like battles become a drag.

Some other tips:

-Customize your guns. Go to a tinkerer, find some parts that have some good numbers besides them (lol) and equip them. Upgrading your machinegun is the most necessary as that's the main damage dealer, handguns and such are there just to finish off an enemy really (handguns can also break HP gauges but you don't need to rely on that much), but customize all of them. You don't have to think too much about what to put, just put on something that seems good. Oh and you can move the gun on the grid around with a certain button, I just found this out today.

-Switch weapons between characters often. This game doesn't have a traditional form of leveling. Your levels are determined by the level of your machineguns, handguns, and grenades. So basically if Vashyron is lvl 10 in machinegun, lvl 8 in handgun, and level 5 in grenade, his total level is 23. By leveling up you can increase your HP and weight which is helpful. So switch weapons between characters all the time.

-You can dual wield machineguns and handguns. You can fire twice as many bullets and I think deal double damage as well. Oh and this helps you gain EXP in whatever you're using faster too. You can get a second machinegun in the Dakota Vein which is an optional dungeon. Dual wield that shit with your first machinegun ASAP. Considering machineguns do all the damage, they just can't finish an enemy off, you can imagine the benefits. However you need a certain weight to dual wield, but it's not that high. Which is why switching weapons is important to level up fast and gain more weight. Oh and to get this machinegun you need to kill two lvl 50 enemies at the final stage of the dungeon which are tough...but can still be easily beaten. Just terrorize them with
Armor Piercing bullets
by equipping your machinegun user with the magazine case. They go down fast.

-On chapter 6 there's a fast money trick you can abuse. Look that up.

aight. it's nice gettin tips from people who've played a game just recently while it's still fresh in their mind. thanks mah nigs .

After taking a long hiatus from Pokemon, I finally dove back in with Black version.

It has instantly captivated and reinvigorated my interest in Pokemon especially since the region and most of the Pokemon I've seen so far are all new (part of the reason why I stopped playing Pokemon was because of the familiarity of Soul Silver).

Just Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door for me. Just beat chapter 3. Great game.

I've been playing Glory of Heracles (DS) lately. Just a little here and there is all I can stand. It's really quite terrible, hard to imagine NOA thought it should be localized. To think they could have spent that money localizing Mother 3 for the eShops is quite annoying.

Currently playing FF: 4 Heroes of Light for the first time.

Currently mixed on it. I like the visuals, audio, and the crown system, but the constant party
seperation
and bosses are terrible.

I'm almost at the end of August on Persona 3 Portable. As someone that mainly plays MMO'S & western RPG's it's a crime that these games didn't come out on 360/ps3. Love it, this is a japanese game done right. Gives me hope for the future. Can't wait to start on P4G.

Suikoden II and just finished Suikoden I, first time playing both of them and they are awesome. I'm thinking of maybe going with III then V. I haven't heard good things about IV so that will not be a priority. How is Tierkreis by the way?

I like all Suikoden games, including 4, yes. It's not as good as others, but not as bad as people make it to be, especially when we are starving for more Suikoden. V is amazing, it has some issues, but it's great. 3 is double edged sword, you might won't like it if you expect traditional Suikoden, but as a game, it is good, original and interesting and has great characters mostly.
Tierkreis is... let's say, mediocre. It's not bad, it's just isn't very good too and doesn't feel Suikodenish. I know someone on gaf likes it a lot though.

I've clocked 75 hours (!) on DQ6. I've literally spent the last 3 weeks in the casino and grinding whenever I would just otherwise be watching TV or something.

Probably overlevelled as hell (Hero and Carver @ level 53), I'm at the very end of the main quest I think.
The two sage brothers just blasted down the big castle in the world you have to fly to on the horsey.
- I just got it into my head that I wanted a slime team, so I've been trotting around areas with metal slimes (liquid and king) levelling up a B-team of slimes.

Considering I didn't really like the story in this installment much, suppose I've got more than my money's worth! I'm still missing a few mini medals though, think I'm on 95 when FAQs say I should be on 100. There's really no way of knowing which ones I'm missing other than using a FAQ and zooming to each location is there? Sigh.

Oh and it took me about 60 hours of play before I realised Nevan was male. All this time I thought he was a she :3
