Sony's Gamescom Media Briefing On "Release Plans for PlayStation 4"

Yes?

Because people here are afraid that the PS4 lineup won't sell enough to push the PS4 even higher?

I highly doubt that the PS4 will have trouble selling will based on the pre-orders alone. It's not like the Wii U (no 3rd party support/slow exclusive start) or the Vita (has games but not a lot of 3rd party support right now and "AAA" exclusives and other problems). There's tons of games in development for the PS4 and we already know it's going to get multi-plats along with the Xbox one.

Just found out I need to work late tomorrow so will miss the show, but might catch the Post-show stuff. Any idea how quickly afterwards it'll be available to rewatch?

Well like I said earlier, I'm not demanding a better launch lineup. I'm just saying, I think the lineup is pretty weak, so I'd like to see what is coming further in the future to make me feel better about buying the hardware.
So it's frustrating that Sony are being coy about future offerings, because what I've seen of launch stuff isn't very exciting, and a Gamescom of just more of that isn't gonna impress me.
Basically, I don't think Sony shouldn't rest on their laurels, they can't afford to drop the momentum they have, especially when Microsoft continues to aggressively attempt to reverse their fortunes.

I think the line up is strong.

I love Killzone, I think Shadow Fall looks awesome, I can't wait to see the multiplayer
DriveClub should look great by release
Console gamers are in for a treat with BF4 at 60 FPS and 64 player support

Then we have all the indie and free 2 play titles

I mean they are launching a new system which they invested millions of dollars into....let them launch the system and those games, then they can talk about the future during VGA 2014, GDC or E3 2014

And the problem being, Sony have shown almost nothing to come after that.
So the PS4 appears to offer a middling launch lineup and nothing else.

Of course there are games in development, I just want a glimpse of them.
You have Infamous in Q1 next year and an abundance of third party stuff (maybe even The Order).

Well, PSP and Vita launched with almost a dozen first party titles each, so Sony hasn't been consistent on front-loading launches at all.

Coincidentally, those two systems had really smooth development cycles like the PS4 seems to have, so I'm sure we'll see at least one more big game (maybe from SCEJ?)

Maybe. I think we will get another big Launch Window game. As in before March type game. Maybe a big January release. I just don't see another big retail game at launch. Like Mik Pad said I could definitely see more PSN games at launch like a HouseMarque game.

Well, I just hope that PS4 isn't going to have a serious drought of titles comes early 2014.

All we friggin have thus far is Infamous.

What else do they have planned?

I seriously doubt The Order is early 2014. Likely later summer or early fall.

My point was...don't show until you are ready.
And I think it's hard to imagine those studio dont have stuff ready to show, unless there are really something's wrong going on. It's pretty weird for sony to show the order with just cutscene, not even talking about gameplay at all, and from interviews, seems like very early in development.

Gametrailers live video player supports replaying of old content. If you catch their post-show, you will be able to move the position of the player to the -2hr state and see everything.

Vita had shit third party support after launch too, PS4 wouldn't have that problem.
The launch line up for the PS4 isn't just made up of those three exclusives, you know.

It's better to give some exclusives breathing space instead of throwing them in with the rest as well as all the third party games at launch. Yes, the PS4 is going to get plenty of third party games, but if Sony blew their load at launch they'd personally have nothing to show for a good while - which would be perceived poorly.

What's happened to the 20 games ?

I know people have different opinion on when to show stuff, but if its 20 games in the first year then I simply don't believe that these titles are not ready to show.

People in here may want to act like people are asking for stuff to be shown well in advance, but we are meant to believe we are getting 20 titles in the next 14 months, and we really haven't seen much at all.

Can you point me to an interview where this was said? I think I totally missed or my brain refused to believe that it's early in dev.

If the PS4 releases Oct 21 with a handful of retail games and a good number of PSN and F2P games, are people really going to cancel their preorder for fear of STARVING for content for a week or two waiting for the big November third party titles?

It means the tech is in development. The PS3 devs are jumping from dx9 era tech to dx11 era tech. They have to show something substantial to make people say "wow" othwise people will call PS4 a PS3.5 and it will hurt it's image.

I mean look at how bad the launch games looked at e3. Pop ups galore, missing effects etc. The devs just got the final sdk's last month I believe

Loads of downloadable titles are out early next year, quite a few third party games and I wouldn't be surprised if an exclusive for early next year is announced tomorrow.
The Order has been worked on since 2010 hasn't it? It could be an April release?

If Sony are apparently pulling stuff from the conference then it's not because 'it's not ready' to be shown, it's a strategical decision.
And for me, it's a bad one. Because I need more new stuff, not more of the same.
I think my opinion is pretty fair.

/well, I hope you are right, but I am not too optimistic.

No - it isn't. They showed Agent, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy Versus 13 too soon and what now? Vaporware, ??? and complete rebrand and a lost exclusive.

I don't think we'll see 20 in the first year, but we'll hear about several tomorrow and more at TGS/the Spike awards.
We'll probably even see stuff at E3 next year, nowadays showing all you have early is bad.

I look at the launch titles and while not overly impressive it is certainly far better than the way this current gen started out. Imagine if the PS3 had launched with KZ2, Battlefield Bad Company, Assassins Creed and Motorstorm.

I know I'm probably alone thinking this, but sometimes I get the feeling people here (GAF in general) don't play games anymore. They just like to talk about games.

The PS4 has about 15 titles announced and expected for this year alone.
But people don't seem to care. They always want something new.
Even if they have not played what is already announced... they always want something new, because otherwise, the console is going to suck.

It's kinda ridiculous.
If the Xbone does not annouce more exclusives, it's gonna bomb.
If sony does not announce anything new, they will bomb.

All I know is that the PS4 already has enough games this year to get myself to start a new backlog and that's somthing I'll try to avoid... Even if I somehow managed to finish my PS3 & Vita Backlogs (Not gonna happen lol!).

They will have new games there..count on it. It's a matter how many new PS4 titles they will unveil and I think 2 is the perfect amount. No need to go crazy with the reveals at this point. TGS, and later on VGAs will give more opportunities. What's important is to not have any droughts in the launch window..way more so than the day 1 releases

It would be kind of pointless have a press conference at Gamescom if they weren't going to announce anything new, right?

They will announce at least one new PS4 game tomorrow.

After presenting the release date and release territories, they will close off the show by showing a new PS4 exclusive that will be so amazing that we will be able to hear on the livestream so many jaws dropping to the floor among the audience.

This is pure speculation and hope

So what time is the show tomorrow?

Thanks for clearing that up. Has there been a Gamescom where Sony announced nothing new though?

Sony announces shitton new of stuff on Gamescom every year, and they always livestream it.

Dont worry, vast majority of things they announce has worldwide appeal.

Sony have 20 titles in development for 2014, those games should be in a state where you can show it to people. also TLoU is revealed more than 1 year ahead from the release date, many other games usually have that 1 year head start from reveal to release date, so unless Sony is going to announce games and release it in a month or two after announcement, we should be hearing about those 20 titles now, especially the ones for first half of 2014

I'm not demanding they show something that's due several years in the future.
There's bound to be a handful of games further along enough to have a 2014 release window, how about we see a couple of those.

Well that's lucky - because we have Gamescom, TGS, VGAs and GDC early next year. I don't understand the problem.

No but I do expect them to attempt to satiate my thirst for new games by way of trailers, regardless of whether they're not set to release until the next year.
An okay launch lineup + lots of nice info on new games coming in the future is fine.

I would rather them work on finishing games than satiating your needs.

I'm pretty sure those games were NOT in active development when they were first mentioned by Sony and you should never do something like that.

I just want some new IP's shown. I think most of NEOGAF would be more excited for new IP than sequels. I just hope these additional teams at Sony can deliver that in a timely fashion.
