Sony Gamescom Press Conference Thread: Let Us Dream

I'm an indie dev and my dream is one day my game will be big enough to be mentioned at a conference, and even I thought it was a bit overboard with indie love, haha.

I thought it was a solid conference; surprised that others thought it was terrible honestly!

should have PM'ed Shahid about CSD

I've had a PS4 preordered since E3. After today, if you gave me a choice between a PS4 and an XBone, I would choose the XBone. More timed exclusives, Titanfall, more exclusive content. The fact that Kinect might actually not suck... MS is flat-out buying their advantages and its working. The Sony conference was underwhelming. I'll stick with the preorder but man, MS did win today in my mind.

Also, the European equivalent of Jack Tretton is no Jack Tretton. I like Jack.

I totally agree with this, and was/am in the same position as you are. I actually switched my pre-order, one reason being friends and the other being some of the reasons you mentioned.

I absolutely love everything Sony is doing and I can't wait to get a PS4, but...later. When all of their big heavy hitting first party titles start to roll out, I'll join the party.

Nonetheless, I thought the Gamescom showing was pretty solid from Sony today, but I thought Microsoft, despite not doing a public broadcast, did even better today.

That Rime game really blew me away. Solid solid conference. I love that Sony is trying to bring Indie games and drop the Indie. These games deserve the limelight.
Looking at both conferences overall though I think they are pretty even. Neither system has a game I need to play and if I was being smart I would wait till next year
to pick them up but alas I can't stand not having them when they launch so its still day one for both.

Loved the conference, it confirmed everything i wanted to be confirmed - that being that the focus isnt purely on AAA franchises and yearly releases, but instead more independence and variety, I was having mad ps1 era vibes the whole way through.

The problem with that is theyre only going all out to buy up incentives to buy their consoles, to make up for the shambles of a launch, if enough people buy the console then the necessity to continue to pour money over the console evaporates, along with the number of exclusives, timed or otherwise.

What would you do in those 30 years in the meantime? Twiddle your thumbs in boredom until finally that 30 year mark happens? You said a few years into ps3 lifecycle for you you be interested to buy one. Was that an excruciating wait or something? Did you not entertain yourself with other platforms until you finally bought a ps3 which was much more affordable and bigger library?

Unless you have a ridiculously narrow taste that you can't imagine yourself play anything else besides a ps4 I find your whole complaint odd. The system hasn't even been released yet, vast majority of the people who will be owners of a ps4 are not getting one in the next year. And it's for a reason.

The more rational response should be "Well, nothing at gamescon for ps4. I guess I could see what else is their for PC/Xbox 360/Xbox One/PS3/Vita/3DS/Wii U in the near future, unitl there is something on the ps4 I'm interested in."
I had an Xbox 360 for next gen experiences before I got a PS3. But now, the XBO doesn't exactly seem to have a much better library than the PS4 in that regard. I remember before I got a PS3, I had Lost Odyssey, Oblivion, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, etc all sorts of great games. But I'm not seeing any similar titles like that on the PS4 or the XBO, and it is kind of disappointing. That's all I am saying. Am I not allowed to be disappointed at Sony's conference, and their lack of games that appeal to me thus far?

Yea. I would've been psyched just to see some next gen Dynasty Warriors footage or something.

Western studios don't make those kinds of mid-tier titles anymore. Now it's either indie/digital distro or it's AAA/sell 5M or fail titles for the most part. Japanese developers are the ones willing to make the "mid-tier" type (hence your example) and they'd all likely wait for TGS to show any of those "mid-tier" titles since so many have a Japanese slant (again, like DW).

Anyhow, I was blown away by Sony's conference. The sheer quantity of games shown without dipping in to the biggest first party studios was stunning. I didn't expect so many new exclusives, and if you told me how many they'd have I'd assume Sony blew their wad and showed off new stuff from SSM, Bend, GG's second game, a new Miyazaki/Sony joint, etc. Instead those studios (that we all know are working on new projects) didn't show a thing and we got an overload of exciting new content.

If this is the kind of show where Sony can have while holding back the major first party projects I very much look forward to TGS, the VGAs, and next year's E3 when they really open the AAA floodgates.

Is this what resentful panic looks like?
lol, by most accounts Microsoft had a better showing even without a real conference. And Sony dropped the ball close to the finish race by launching on Nov 29th in Europe. Microsoft will now surely launch earlier an with Fifa packed in with exclusive content and what is now being seen as a much stronger launch lineup.

I'm kind of dumbfounded at some of the reactions here. People have been clamoring for games and Sony brought them in droves. Oh, but they aren't big budget shooters or anything, so it doesn't matter. That seems to be a common sentiment for the disappointment over the press conference, which is absolutely ridiculous.

This was one of the stronger press conferences I've seen in recent memory because of Sony pacing it will a large amount of games and solid announcements. I appreciate that they let creative side show a bit and let indie developers get some more spotlight. I also hesitate to even use that word "indie" now because to me, they are just a developer making the games they want to make and Sony is providing a space in which to let them show and do whatever they want. I wouldn't even be surprised if at E3 / GamesCom next year they don't even mention "indie" and they just announce the games if they were these big AAA titles because that is exactly what they should be doing. Watching the conference really did remind me of the old PlayStation days where so many incredible games were being announced all the time and they were all over the place in terms of creativity, originality and even quality and Sony wanted that to help build their platform. Kind of makes me sad when a press conference chalk full of games from teams of varying sizes is chastised because there wasn't enough AAA big budget games from studios like Naughty Dog or SSM. Kind of a slap in the face to all the teams that had their stuff announced. Such a poor mindset to have when the industry needs as much freedom and creative expression as possible to help it thrive and grow. Those games will come. But...

... I guess the problem as that no matter how much sense someone like famousmortimer makes, people will choose to ignore it because everything is in the now. No one wants to wait for announcements they want everything right this moment.

I think a lot of people just like complaining and/or being angry at anything and everything.

bandwagon thing probably. should be fine after a week. kinda interested how both sony and microsoft does as far as TV adverts go. would be funny if MS does one like the ipad/w8 tablet or the Windows/Apple guys.

I'm just not that impressed by Microsoft. I'm not sure if I should take some of these posters seriously. I'm sure some are geniune but I see alot of over the top juniors out there among them and it makes me wonder. Looking in other threads, I'm just not seeing the same overall reaction. Outside of Fable Legends, I wasn't moved by anything they showed. We certainly aren't talking about them as much as Sony which is telling. I'm not sure what more Sony could have done outside of giving away their 2014 E3 show. I saw a ton of games, the new UI plus features, two price drops and a release date announced.

Plus, Killzone's graphics are dramatically improved. Its like a different game now. Overall, i think Sony had a very strong showing.

By 'most accounts', who are you referring to?
And how many consoles will be available for launch in Europe? Even if Microsoft was to launch first, they'll probably be incredibly supply constrained. So whilst it's a great idea, the benefit of the FIFA pack-in will probably be very limited.

By who? Because I'd say Killzone: Shadow Fall just made a damn strong argument for best launch title period, and easily looks like the most interesting exclusive. This before anyone has even tried out the new Driveclub build. Sony's first party offerings are looking in peak form at Gamescom.

This was a press conference for gamer's, it's getting back to gaming's roots. In the days of the C64, Amiga, and even into the PSONE days, these "indie" games were the bread and butter of gaming.

Today, there is no middle ground, you're either a big budget AAA title, or an "indie", both are equally valuable to the gaming world, and could deliver game of the year contenders.

Everyone's eager to see Sony's AAA's, but equally, we know they are in development, we know a stack of them will be released in the PS4's first year, we also know the high quality stream of games will continue upto, and beyond, the launch of the PS4's successor.

Sony are obviously extremely confident about what they have in the locker, they've generated so much goodwill, hype and pre-orders, yet still have multiple titles from (what would generally be considered) their premium studios. The moment the Gran Turismo's, Uncharted's and whatever start to be revealed, the system could very well be heading into PS2 levels of success.

I thought this was a great show, and I stand by it. I'm actually super impressed that it managed to be this good despite an obvious show of nothing MEGATON.

All in all, the conference basically spelled out to you that :

- indies are here
- Sony-published, creative and good 'AA'-titles are here ( Rime, etc )
- major multiplats are here (AC, and every other big 3rd-party)
- AAA- first-party titles are here and coming.

My confusion over the people disappointed about the lack of AAA games... do you think that just aren't coming? I mean obviously all of their studios are making games. Obviously it's going to get a buttload of multiplats. Obviously they will secure third party exclusives.

I mean that is obvious, right? Even when sony was at their worst they still delivered great games.

I think Sony knew pretty well that their Gamescom approach of not announcing what their big studios are working on would cause some disappointment for the fans desperate for AAA-announcements. That was why they had an awkward segment where they talked about how all 14 of the WWS are actively working on PS4 titles... despite not even announcing a single one from WWS on the show.

People want their instant gratification. MS clearly delivered that in spades, relying heavily on game announcements where all they've got were CGi trailers, or major indications that games won't be ready till late 2014/15.

Actually, except GT6, were there any CGi trailers at all in Sony's event? I can't help but feel I did not see even one trailer that wasn't at least in-engine, if not gameplay.

You are allowed to be disappointed, but you definitely set your expectations too high. 360 was a unique situation, because PS3 came out a year later and PC gaming was in decline at that time. Most of the 3rd parties games were exclusive to MS just because it was the only console on the market. Now with both consoles releasing at the same time and increased game budgets such a thing won't happen anymore. Launch consoles are for people that don't want to play on PC or are happy with the launch games. If you aren't, wait for a year, then come back. No publisher is going to be stupid enough releasing a $30M game on a single platform with a shitty install base. That's why you see so much small stuff from Sony and the games from MS are mostly current gen games moved over to XB1.

The bigger stuff from both like Quantum Break and The Order isn't going to release until some people own the damn thing. You'll have to live with that I guess

The move to 8GB really must have caught them off guard because Shadowfall looks like its own sequel. I really makes you wonder what big budget Q4 2014 releases will look like.

very boring event and someone should FYI SONY that they should stop giving UBI time for Blackflag.

- price cut on the vita, vita memory card price cut, Borderlands Vita, PS4 release date were all sweet news though

So basically gamescom convinced me ps4 is going to have a great indie library. Problem for me is, I don't really care to play indie games on a next gen console. I already own a PC that is well more than capable of running every indie game that comes to the platform. So what was Sony's use of gamescom? They are supporting indie devs... thats great for them. And they also confused me by all the announcements that "exclusive debut" which could mean very little if the game is going to be ported shortly anyway.

Personally, I wanted to be wow'd by Sony. And they didn't WOW me (they didn't WOW me even once). They didn't showcase must play quality games (for me at least) and for that reason I am not buying a ps4 launch or probably in 2014. Also, the director for the broadcast needs to be fired. Worst in recent memory. Who wants to watch the audience half the show? No one.

Probably that money is invested in having timed exclusivity for CoD maps, for exclusive game modes in FIFA and several other games, and timed exclusivity for some games, like TitanFall. And to bundle FIFA with any XBox One on EU.

Don't expect that 1 billion dollar investment goes to create 10 GTA-like AAA first party games of 100M cost each.

Definitely. But more importantly, a considerable chunk of it went towards establishing new studios, given how the MS situation was like a wasteland a couple of years ago. If anybody actually thinks that it's 1 billion dollars of software alone, then I have a shiny bridge to sell them...

It's not ALL indies, you know.

There's several games where the 'SCE Presents' popped up, for example :

- Rapture
- Rime
- Shadow of the Beast

And several others.

Those were by no account indie-titles, they were published/funded by Sony, and are clearly larger 'AA' titles, similar to Journey/Starhawk, etc.

Sony dropped the ball by not emphasising every damn time what games were true exclusives and what weren't.

Sony is not going to continue the PS3 lifecycle 1:1 on the PS4. The install base is too low for that. You will have to wait for a while.

I doubt many of the opinions would have been different irrespective of what Sony showed. I wouldn't pay too much heed. Sony brought a truck load of games, and thankfully some unique, artistic and funky looking stuff. The quantity of which was staggering, and the quality of which, some looked seriously impressive.

I like you, and I like this post.

Fairly disappointed myself. I would be lying if I were to say I didn't want to see at least one AAA title but as others have said, the big ones will come.

The Vita is another story. I couldn't help but think afterwards that Sony must really hate the Vita, they won't even put their own games on it.

Also, does anyone know if Rime or Rapture are retail? Part of the 20?

Also, does anyone know if Rime or Rapture are retail? Part of the 20?

Rapture probably is, since Sony Santa Monica directly credits themselves partially as helping with development.

Not sure about Rime though.

Darn these 3rd-party Sony-published where Sony doesn't come out and tell us whether or not WWS actually helped out on the game, or did they not.

I was very impressed by Sony's showing, and I'm a bit embarrassed by the amount of people on a game discussion forum that seem to be writing off any game that isn't a whiz-boom-bang-shoot-stab-kill-or-otherwise-maim your friend online within $100 million dollar grimy environments.

Sony announces all their AAA next-gen titles by their big hitters. People complain that those games aren't coming out for a year or two.

Sony announces a ton of smaller games that are coming out in the first year. People complain that there weren't enough AAA next-gen titles by their big hitters.

Seriously, they just can't win with some people. I personally was very excited about what was announced, and am very excited that we DON'T know what's coming from their big studios. We know they are working on stuff, and by the time it's revealed we won't have to wait as long for them to come out. I think this extra-long generation has spoiled people in what they think a launch lineup should be. The fact is there are a ton of games at launch for both consoles, in a variety of genres. Be happy we are finally getting a new generation and be excited that we have all kinds of surprises in store in the near future.

As I mentioned in another thread, I wasn't really impressed with Sony's conference. I think it was all down to the presentation of the conference. They made Rine, Rapture and Shadow look like PSN games along with all the indy games they showed. Then they spent to much time with Ubisoft.

To be honest, I'm on the fence of which console I'll buy. One thing is sure, I won't be pre-ordering. I think I'm waiting for that game that makes me say "I HAVE to buy this console" in the way that Halo did for the 360. Right now the ps4 has more games that interest me, but nothing that'll make me leave the current gen right away.

I think Sony's biggest err in this conference was how they framed and paced the games announcement.

I know it's a small and redundant matter, but it would've been great if they had set it very very clearly once they were out of the 'indie stage', and moved on the real exclusives announcement like Rime and Rapture.

Those games, despite being developed by a small team, was by no means indie. Indie also gives the impression of self-publishing and timed-exclusivity, which was clearly not the case with SCE-published/funded games.

They should have been a very clear distinction between 'self-published indie titles' , 'SCE-published exclusive A/AA-titles', 'WWS AAA-titles' and 'AAA-multiplats.'

As it was, the indie and the SCE-published titles were so close to each other, it kinda blurred the impression.

Except Sony's message all along has been that games are games and we need to stop focusing on the indie/publisher divide because that ultimately translates into quirky "game" vs. real game.

And they did roll out a clear visual break between the indies and the Sony WWS titles, but they aren't going to explicitly say something that translates as "now on to the real games we're making".

Figured I should drop this here...
ibrTJQpnigZr32.gif

People thought that was bad? People wanted games and Sony gave them plenty, so I don't get what the deal is.

People were setting their expectations way too high expecting new IPs from Guerrilla, Sony Santa Monica, Media Molecule, and Naughty Dog.

Shit was never going to happen.

But hey, I got to see Killzone: Shadow Fall re-assert itself as the go-to exclusive for launch, and the visual stunner that shows off the PS4 hardware.

And I got to see something like Rime completely blow me away. That's why we have indies folks, the big studios don't create games like this anymore.

So any hands on from the show floor?

Gamescom starts properly tomorrow, and we'll start seeing hands on impressions then.

Anyways, just finished watching the conference, I missed it earlier. I'll echo the sentiments of the camera work: it sucked. The close ups were dumb, panning out to the crowd too much during trailers, and that kaaaahhhhrazy zooming in and out at the start of the conference. Just awful work in general.

However, I was pretty excited for most of the content shown in the conference. I am a huge supporter of indie gaming, digital gaming, and all kinds of genres in general. Sony absolutely delivered on "games, games, games" for me. If you aren't a fan of indie games though, I can see why this conference may have not been your bag. I didn't need Sony to bring their big guns for this conference, mainly because I'll be picking up a PS4 next year after E3 2014 (possibly Fall 2014).

They gave an introduction to their WWS titles, specifically mentioning these are the European based developers . People are either being wilfully ignorant or deliberately obtuse if they want to call the games you mentioned "indie".

Top Bottom
