Killzone Mercenary Beta Discussion

Just saw the gamescom Killzone Mercenary trailer. Looks so awesome!!

One thing that stood out in the new trailer was the knife throw at 54sec http://youtu.be/J7WyyKy54LU?t=54s

It looks like it may be a cutscene, but since I've never played a KZ game before, I have to ask - can you throw knives in Killzone??! Still waiting for the beta to appear in the store over here (EU)

unfortunately the knife throw is done during a seemless cutscene, you cannot actually throw a knife in the normal gameplay.
(completed kz:m 4 times now and its definitely not possible)

I'm usually not big on 4x4 FPS multiplayer (6x6 min or bust), but it works I guess. Thankfully the map is small enough so you don't have to run for minutes until you find someone to shoot at. Choke points are well placed too. Overall, I like it a lot.

I took my vita to work today so I could download the beta as soon as the store updates :)

It's the first time it has ever left the house lol

I think thats the point though, if you were armored up and carrying a knife, in the real world, in close proximity to an enemy, youd win if they didnt go for a headshot - as such whoever it was clearly was emptying his clip into your torso and not your head.

This is more of an issue when youre using a low-repeating fire gun such as one with a silencer that isnt fully automatic.
The same is true for singleplayer all the way through the game on easy, you can practically kill everyone and they wont counter except for one particular instance (no spoilers here) but doing the same on hard will see you dying, often.
Once people get to grips with multiplayer and you start coming across better players rather than "everyones first day in vidya land", the frequency of how often you can get away with knifing everyone will drop off significantly.

a multiplayer game should never be judged for its gameplay mechanic until its matured enough for a decent amount of people to get good.

Yeah I totally see that now. I just played a match where the other team was doing their fair share of knifing and those prompts come out QUICK, I only managed to counter and kill one out of 5. I wasn't in love with the idea of using the touch screen for melee initially (thanks Uncharted) but it adds another solid risk/reward element to the game.

for people who still have problems with hacking...

look at the picture above. There are three green(sorry colorblind here) highlighted hectagons. These hectagons have black patterns inside.
All you need to do is press one of the 6 surrounding hexacons, that has a pattern that partially matches the black pattern. And then the hectagon with the black pattern in the middle (this removes the black tiles).

If we want the top Green Highlighted haxagon to dissappear, we press this.. Cypher key B

and then this.. Cypher Key C.

those two combined fill the black tiles..

so it´s just a matter of finding the right tiles form the 6 outer ones, that fit the middle tiles..

This game is more fun than it has any right to be. I've nearly killed my battery on this beta alone with randoms. The only complaint I have is that people don't know how to play the game (follow the objectives of the game). I might get shot left & right, but I'm able to rank highly thanks to completing objectives.

Managed to get a few quick rounds in before I hit the sack.

Wow. Talk about setting the bar for future Vita games. Looks amazing (seriously), great framerate, super easy to pick up and play. Can't wait for the full game.

Wow!
Did you do it because you are a very diligent reviewer or because you actually like the game that much?

A bit of both, relaunching my own personal site in the near future with a bunch of major changes to how we review things, (no longer applying scores, and that sort of thing), and because it genuinely is the most i have used my vita since SCEE sent it over before launch.

A solid multiplayer FPS on a handheld is just unheard of, this games going to go far.

Only put about 20 minutea into it so far but WOW! Gameplay and graphics are beyond anything I've ever seen and played on an handheld before!
I can't find it on the EU store ? Not up yet ?
It is, or at least in the UK it is. I downloaded it about an hour ago through the Vita's PS Store. It's under PS+.

Anyone else notice how hot the Vita gets playing this game?

I still not sure I understand the objectives fully. In the vanguard phase, is the objective simply to hack the terminals indicated by a yellow point on the radar? In the interrogation phase, what is it the causes someone to become incapacitated instead of simply dying instantly? Do crosses on the radar indicate teammates who can be revived and enemies who can be interrogated and executed?

I'm still amazed by the graphics and just the presentation overall. The screens and videos online don't do it justice. After increasing the sensitivity a little, even the controls are spot on. I really couldn't have expected more.

It's as if the beta installed new hardware on my vita. Holy hell how can it run this?? The game itself so solid too.

holy shit - you blew my mind... i still hadnt figured it out since closed beta.

i've been doing it completely backwards trying to fill in the blank spots without a black pie slice.

Thanks for the hacking tutorial Hanmik.

Just played two rounds. Don't know about the gunplay, bullets hit too hard. It's kinda who sees who first. Have to learn the controls more, they should have added auto sprint. Always forget about weapon switch and grenade. Default sensitivity is too low, don't know about motion aim yet.

Vanguards were really fun from what I have tried.

A big negative is the touch only menu. What did they think? I can already see reviews bitching and lowering the score about it.

I don't know why I'm reading this thread, the hype is killing me.

I don't even like online multiplayer and yet I'm itching to try this out.

I have trouble connecting to games. Is there a specific port list I can forward to my Vita? I thought I had gotten the standard ones (and also have upnp) but I get disconnected when attempting to join games. God I hate p2p. I hope MS making dedicated more prevalent in console makes Sony get a clue.

40 kills, 20 deaths. Hacked a terminal in the final 5 seconds of a round to force a draw. Interrogated the bastard ISA, and used the info the get a triple kill grenade. Used the Vulture UAV to find and execute everyone.

This is awesome.

Bad news, however, my right trigger is losing its click.

downloaded the beta last night and played for 4-5 hours straight. amazing game! and im just hooked by the multiplayer! still blown away how this looks and how its possible on a portable system! gg cambridge did an amazing job. cant wait to see how the campaign stacks up!

Played a bit while SR IV was installing. I was really impressed the first time I looked down the scope man that OLED screen. I am going to play a bit this weekend but so far I think this game is going to be on my buy list.

I really hope this game does well I like the concept of a portable online shooter that I can take with me.

I can guarantee you something, my poxy little site isn't going to make me rich or well known, but Ill have the most comprehensive extensive review for the game available to read the moment I am legally able to post it ready for you all.

I just tried it for a couple of minutes, I'm the rookie who keeps dying all the time but I sure as hell enjoyed the overall polish and the game itself. I'm not of a FPS multiplayer gamer, I always get killed whenever I try these type of games once in a while, but this game is going to be so good on solo mode. This beta sealed the deal. I'm definitely going to pre-order this game!

For some reason I can't connect to a game. :/

Anyone else having this problem?

Usually this sort of thing is caused by NAT being too strict.
If you go to settings -> network -> connection status, right down the bottom there is "NAT Type".
(I may be wrong) but there are three types; 1,2 and 3s. 1's can connect to everyone, 2's can connect to 1's and 2's, while 3's can only connect to 1's. The problem is, for wifi, the most common (I believe) is 2. So if you are stuck at 3, then you can only connect to a very limited number of people.

If this is the case, the best bet is to look at seeing if you can configure your router (for example, have the vita run in the DMZ...)

I'm not a network expert (at all) though, so take this as likely complete garbage.

Connection Difficulties with Killzone: Mercenary on PS Vita

We're aware that some people may be experiencing problems joining into and maintaining a connection for multiplayer games of Killzone: Mercenary.
If you are having problems then the details below may help you set up your internet connection to be more stable for this game.

IMPORTANT: Contact your Internet Service Provider or router manufacturer for proper instructions on how to make a configuration change on your router, input port information for your network or to set up a DMZ device.

Please note that there are some technical aspects to the information below and you should feel comfortable with carrying them out, and have permission to do so, before you make any alterations.

Connections and network ports used by Killzone Mercenary.

Killzone: Mercenary uses certain network ports in order to connect to the PlayStation Network (see http://manuals.playstation.net/document/gb/psvita/psn/firewall.html).

Killzone: Mercenary also connects to game servers providing community features.

Killzone: Mercenary makes connections to other players running Killzone: Mercenary when playing multiplayer games.

For each connection to another player, Killzone: Mercenary makes a connection to them using a port in the following range:

Port 49167-65535 UDP
The PS Vita connection settings application's network test does not test that these ports are open. So, even if you are being reported as NAT Type 2 or 1, you may find these ports are not open on your router.

Unopened ports may lead to failed connection to other players, and the guidelines below may be able to resolve that issue.

Note: If your NAT Type is 3, making these changes may not be enough to get you connecting. If difficulties prevail, you should contact your system administrator or ISP provider for assistance.

Troubleshooting

If you have problems getting into multiplayer games with other people (for example, you’re regularly seeing a “failed to connect to host” error message from the game), you might need to make a configuration change on your router in order for Killzone: Mercenary to improve the connection with other players.

You may be able to resolve issues by setting up one of the following, in order of preference :-

Port Triggering.
Port Forwarding.
Making your Vita the DMZ device on your router.
Note: It is advised to avoid making your Vita the DMZ device if possible, as only 1 device in your home network can be the DMZ device, and you may need another device to have that role. However, if you have NAT Type 3 connection then this may be your only option as Port Triggering and Port Forwarding will not work.

Setting up Port Triggering

A guide to setting up port triggering can be found here - http://portforward.com/help/porttriggering.htm.

Routers which support Port Triggering generally have their Port Triggering configuration sections near to that for Port Forwarding. The main difference is you have to say which port sending out data should result in ports being opened for traffic back inbound.

In the case of Killzone: Mercenary, if possible you should set ports 49167-65535 UDP outbound to open the same ports inbound.

Otherwise, if your router requires a specific outbound port to trigger opening inbound, then set port 3478 UDP to open ports 49167-65535 UDP inbound.

If you need help setting up port triggers, contact whoever provides support for your router such as your ISP or router manufacturer for details. If this is not possible, the Port Forward website (http://portforward.com/) may have information on how to find the port triggering section on your router.

Setting up Port Forwarding

If you can, then you should setup port triggering, as port forwarding requires you to give your Vita a static IP address.

A guide to setting up a static IP for your PS Vita can be found here:

http://community.killzone.com/t5/Killzone-Mercenary-PS-Vita/Setting-up-your-Router-with-Port-Forward...

Once this has been done, information on opening ports on your router may be found at the Port Forward website (http://portforward.com/). Look for an entry with specific instructions for Killzone: Mercenary.

This is in addition to the ports required by PlayStation Network (http://portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/PlayStation_Network_PSVita/default.htm).

Note: If the portforward.com details cannot be located, you can use the guide for PlayStation Network, but instead of opening the PlayStation Network ports, open UDP ports 49167-65535 to your Vita's static IP.

Making your PS Vita the DMZ device on your router

This is not the preferred approach, but with some routers it's just not possible to easily set up triggering or forwarding of the game ports. The 'DMZ' device is the device on your network where any traffic that the router doesn't have a destination for will be sent - this makes your PS Vita the bucket for any data being sent to the router, and will often work where other versions don't.

Firstly you have to assign your PS Vita a static IP address as above for port forwarding - once again, the guide here can help:

http://community.killzone.com/t5/Killzone-Mercenary-PS-Vita/Setting-up-your-Router-with-Port-Forward...

Then in your router, you will need to find the option for setting a DMZ device, and enter in the details of the static IP address you've assigned to your Vita. This is usually to be found in the “firewall” or “advanced settings” router option.

In Summary

If you are unable to make a stable connection to join or play Killzone: Mercenary multiplayer games, then you may be able to gain a better connection by trying one of the above options.

In order of preference they are Port Triggering, Port Forwarding and Making your Vita the DMZ device for your router.

However, you should only do this if you are comfortable with the technical details involved, and have the permission of the router owner to make the changes.

I don't much care for console shooters but I fired this up last night and was blown away by the polish and depth. There's a lot here to like, really solid so far and definitely a buy.

Whats the deal with spawns. I'll walk past a certain point only to be shot in the back by someone who wasnt there a second ago.

Will give it another go later, but first impressions besides "wow graphics" are pretty low.

Holy Shit! Just jumped in and this game is gorgeous! Controls seem very tight. No real experience with the game yet - too floored by the visuals. Bravo GG.

Played this for 2 hours last night and it's really a lot of fun. Wish there some more maps to try out, but the one that's there is fun to play on.

Controls felt great after adjusting the sensitivity. Went up about 3 notches on both axis and it's a little twitchy, but I've used the Vita sticks enough to have a good handle on them. Game looks great, runs smooth and I've been having good luck with my connection. Only dropped out of a match once.

I've especially been having fun with this beta because nearly everyone I played with has no idea what they are doing. It makes me feel like I'm actually really good at an online FPS for once! No one hacks and pretty much nobody knows what they are doing when the Interrogation game mode comes up. I've been getting 40 to 50 points while everyone else in the game is struggling to get above 10 points.

Got a great impression with the beta and will most likely be picking this one up.

My major gripe with the game right now is with Warzone. The modes are mostly the same. TDM, Kill Confirmed, Shoot legs & Sneak TDM, Capture objectives you were already capturing ... TDM. Playing this beta's map in particular, I feel like a fast-paced capture the flag would work. Or even a capture the zone mode.

Screenshots and "direct feed" videos do not do this game justice! Excellent multiplayer.

The game looks great, but still looks like handheld game. Not anywhere close to KZ2 or 3 imo.

It's crazy that this game runs so well in MP with everyone's varying internet and WiFi. So not only is a phenomenal engine the netcode is really nice as well.

I had to turn the Gyro sensitivity all the way up, and once I did that it felt unfair. Lol. Fine tuning my aim with Gyro is.....every game should have it. Plain and simple. Makes me wonder how well it would work on a DS4 in KZ:SF.

Yeah, i got disconnected a few times, but the once in game it actual runs better than many AAA console fpses. But is MP going to be limited to 4v4? It would great if we could host games on our Ps3s for epic matches ala Killzone 2. BTw, I didn't knew that you could tweak the Gyro sensitivity, doing that asap!
