Killzone Mercenary Beta Discussion

Take anyone awhile to get used to the sticks on the Vita? I just got a Vita recently and can't really get a handle on on them -- I was getting destroyed when I tried to play this because I just can't aim correctly. Any tips on sensitivity settings I should try?

I turned my sensitivity up all the way, which helps a lot.

I'm really bothered by backstabbing.

It makes sense that the game wouldn't punish you for sneaking up on an enemy by giving you an even longer melee kill animation, but that's what interrogations are. I have often snuck behind two people, low on ammo, and decided not to try to melee kill them. The problem is that if I melee the first, I'll start an interrogation. When that starts, I'll make a noise, and the other player could just turn around and kill me. In that scenario, I kill neither of them. Ideally, I would be able to melee kill the first, then interrogate the second.

Anyway, on the KZM Stats website, there is a stat for 'Backstabs'. Now, this could be a strictly single-player thing, but it seems strange that you aren't able to backstab online. I've been testing to see if I can, and I've had no luck. if you sneak up behind someone and hold Triangle, or tap it multiple times, it still goes into an interrogation. If you begin interrogate someone, and you don't press any prompts, you simply let go of them. If you begin to interrogate someone, throw them to the ground, then you don't press any prompts, they spontaneously die. But this still takes longer than a melee kill from the front.

Well, if anybody else figures it out, do tell me.

Re-spawning is horrible in this game. Like you just killed 2 guys and they come back from behind you horrible. Uninstalled. Hoping it gets fixed at launch.

You're joking right? The spawns work fine, they ca't put people too far back due to the size of the maps and player count. I dunno I haven't had an issue with it. I mean in vanguard sure they can come back but that's ahrdly the be all end all make sure to non lethal down them then.

I quit the beta today and uninstalled it.

After playing the for so long and buying some of the other guns I was starting to feel I might burn myself out before I even opened the retail game. Sometimes it's just best to wait for the fruit to ripen before eating it.

Why would I be joking? It doesn't work "fine" for me either. Also it annoys me a great deal; thus why I posted.

A good solution in vanguard is to non lethal them first which slows down the respawn time. I feel like if they put the spawns further back that you could end up just wandering around lost for a while (which still happens sometimes in the beta).

This is lame, just downloaded the beta and i cant get any matches coz of connection issues..
This nat type 3 bs is really gonna affect me for the rest of my life!

So...melee counter...how the fuck does that thing really work? i´m pretty sure that i did the fucking screen swipe perfectly fine on several occasions, and end dead by a knife stab anyway

I feel like it comes down to speed. If I swipe as fast as I can the moment the prompt appears, I sometimes manage to escape and kill the other guy. The rest of the time, it's exactly as you describe.

You know because of the small map size there will always be a player or two near the hacking point of the enemy team. What this means is that even if you kill them and then go for the hack, by the time you finish doing everything the other players of the opposing team are already there shooting at you. Yesterday I hacked as well as got myself those bonus weapons so many times but not once did I manage to use them because by the time I start using it I am shot dead already.

I'd recommend picking up the Proximity as soon as you can. It's too powerful right now, and few players know how to counter it. You can toss it in the four way in the caverns to score an easy kill, or use it to cover you when hacking.

Score from my last game. Not one of my best tho

What is Proximity?

Damn this game looks good; totally blown away by the visuals compared to anything else on the Vita (or any other handheld/mobile for that matter). Fun too, been doing decently after adjusting sensitivity settings.

Best looking game i ever seen on a handheld.
I hope Guerrilla fix the stability of the game because it's PURE SHIT.
I can barely finish a match every 5 or 6 that I join. Everytime a connection error and everytime I lose the points earned in that match, it's so frustrating.
I know it's a beta, but it's the first time that I see a beta so badly optimized. Killzone 2 beta was fantastic. For me Mercenaries it's almost unplayable, I can't buy new weapons because I can't finish a match, I must be lucky to join a match almost ended to earn some experience, but it's rare. Sometimes the game can't find matches and I have to close and restart the application to avoid that.
fix that shit, Guerrilla!

Yeah, I haven't managed to counter a melee attack yet, and I thought I'd been pretty fast. In fact I haven't killed someone with a melee attack yet either; I'm not quick enough at swiping the screen.

What is Proximity?

A proximity mine - you can buy it from the arms dealer as one of your pieces of equipment. I'm saving up for it; I think it's 8000 credits.

Out of interest shall we make a GAF community for this? Anyone want to buddy up? I'll be on it again tonight (UK time), in about 12 hours.

Only played a couple times but it is fun. My expectations were non existent though.

Game looks amazing, can't wait til the 10th.

I realise it's hard to get the spawning completely flawless because the maps are so small, but I definitely feel like it could use some tweaking. It's fairly common that I'll spawn right in front of two opponents whereas I never spawn anywhere near my own teammates. Not gamebreaking by any stretch of the imagination, but it should be possible to improve somewhat.

Holy shit @ these impressions. I might have to buy a vita because of you guys!

For KZ2 vets, how does it stack up and compare to that? Is it as good as that MP?
Is it good but different? Or does it take what was in KZ2 and add on to that?

Wow!.What a blast of a game!.The most fun multiplayer fps since COD 4!.And those graphics...Congrats Guerrilla Cambridge.Hats off really.
Its very tactical, yesterday i got 24 victory points with very few kills...Its gameplay has a lot of personality.

Its not so brutal. It is more cerebral playing.Much more tactical.Playing with a good and coordinated team is greatly rewarded and very satisfying. It could be loved even by Socom players as is basically 1-2 shoots dead.
But take my word:this will be Vita must have game, at least for fps and multiplayer lovers.

I'm looking forward to shorter matches from the retail game. quick 5 minute team deathmatches will suit me better

What I've found is that if you get a lot of people focusing on the objectives matches do tend to finish pretty quickly. I've had probably three matches last 10-15 minutes, but another couple which were more like 7 or 8 minutes. You notice a big difference when you're up against or fighting with good players.

Does anyone know if the final game will support voice comms? I probably won't use it myself as I'll be doing most of my playing in bed, but it would be good to organise some kind of tactics or buddy system.

apart from using the sticks for looking (i hate gamepad fps) the controls are amazingly well done. I didn't have to look at any instructions and expected all the buttons to do what they did. dont know how they did it but damn..nice job guerilla!

I'd like to know this too. There is an option to set up a party match - which I assume would involve voice chat with friends. I haven't tried it myself though. Anyone here tried setting up a Killzone party? Results?

Even if you don't get the chance to use VAN-Guard, hacking gives you points and points are what matters during hacking phases, not kills. Also the team can/should protect the hacker.

It uses the Vita system parties. There is no game-specific party like for example PSASBR.

And Vita parties have voice chat.

There is an option that says "See the latest Battle Replay".
But Nothing happens when I click on it.
Does that mean we can, at some point, watch replays of our online matches?

Maps are much smaller and more intimate, there's a lot more tactical options (a bunch of robotic drones you can control, you can buy and fully customise your loadout), you can incapacitate enemies rather than kill them and interrogate them to reveal all their teammates on the map, controls are a bit faster and I didn't notice any lag or anything. There are subtle differences and it's only 4 vs. 4, but while I played loads of KZ2 back in the day I can't remember it too clearly. Controls feel closer to KZ3 but the gameplay is a good mix between the two. Hopefully there will be some maps which feel a little larger and more open as they were my favourite in KZ2, but then we'll see as that might not suit the small team sizes so much.

So what's the deal with the beta invites? I thought it was for PS+ members but alas I am left without the goodness :(

If you have PS+ go on the store and you should see it listed there under the PS+ content.

I've found that if you spend a few seconds near the VAN-guard scanning for/shooting enemies before you hack, you should probably have enough time to finish the hack. Similarly, always get around the far side of the VAN-guard so your back is to the chasm and crouch before you start the hack.

Also the team can/should protect the hacker.

They should, but I've found folk only do it a fraction of the time.

You can see the replays, yes, but if you use the "Last Battle" option, not that shortcut.

Not video stream though, just the map from above and some tiny icons moving around.

I finally did it correctly!

Basically in the middle image you see those colored areas vs 'empty' areas right? Find the two matching shapes from the pics around it. Tap one of them and tap the middle and do it again with the other one. Basically try to color/fill the whole symbol

Thanks, I was having trouble with this as well.

I've only played one match, but damn does this game look gorgeous. This is my first Killzone game, so I have to adjust a bit to the character movement and weight, but already it's light years above Resistance and Call of Duty on the Vita.

Of all platforms, Vita and Wii U are keeping my wallet the busiest lately. First the tag team of Pikmin and Dragon's Crown and now Killzone and Wonderful 101 in September. Looking forward to it!

This played exactly as I feared it would. An horrendous FoV coupled with the piss poor analogue sticks = one very unenjoyable experience.

Looks pretty though, if they could get these types of graphics into a game more suited for these sticks, like an RPG or something, then I'd be very happy.

Yeah, still pretty neat. Do you know why some icons are filled in while others are black in the middle?

Funny how no-one else is having any trouble. Maybe it's just you; either you need to get used to it or you're not giving it a chance?

I just read the last two pages and there were people with problems with the sticks. They just aren't great when you need to aim precisely with the right stick. I'd love to connect my PS3 pad via bluetooth, I have no idea why they never allowed that.

Probably already posted a dozen times, but this single player footage is unbelievable... (quite spoilery though)

For the same reason they didn't have TV output from day 1... the touch pads.
