This phone commercial exemplifies everything wrong with this generation

Actually I think those adverts for telecomms companies where they're like 'FREEDOM IS BEING ABLE TO TEXT YOUR BEST FRIENDS FOR FREE' is worse, I mean, way to piss on the fight for genuine freedoms worldwide

As someone who is nearing 30, I can say I have hated children (mostly teenagers) behavior since I myself was a child and beyond. There is always one consistency in generations I imagine, and it's that teenagers suck (and those who never grow out of that era of course).

By teenager I mean, insecure person who does things due to pressure and not of their own desire, focuses more on impressing others than anything, trying to fit in, so basically the basis of most goth/emo culture, bullies, etc. Or the reverse side that beats up the kid for not having the right logo on their shirt and a pair of pants that isn't 100 dollars.

My experience with most teenage girls either as a kid or an adult was that they are barely functional at all and value a pair of pants more than life itself, I bet some girls today would commit suicide if you took their phone away.

If i'm an old man yelling at a cloud though, i've been as such since as far as I can remember, though I was hardly exempt from my own awkward childhood moments, at least whatever I did do was something I actually wanted to do and not to make X impression on X group of people. It's hard to respect people when they don't respect themselves. I don't find the ad in question particularly annoying but, it is something i've noticed with people in general, and not just younger generations. People who are older walk around theme parks all day with a camcorder and such and do more work to make a quality video than they actually spend enjoying themselves, I suppose immortalizing that you had X experience is more important than the actual experience to many.

I'm confused... What am I supposed to be seeing that's so bad?

The people doing fun stuff and checking their phones with miserable expressions of despair on their face because they are jealous. And, the girl who is more concerned with showing off where she is than actually watching the concert she paid for. It's one thing to take a picture, it's another to go CSI on the shit.

Woodstock '69 would have been full of people looking down at their phones if the technology was available. I'll never understand why people act like younger generations are physiologically altered from older generations as if that makes any sense.

I don't mind a snap or a video even, but how people can film and watch an entire live concert through the phone screen is beyond me.

Oh no some actor is living vicariously through their phone, wtf is wrong with this generation?

Wait till GAF hears about this one!

You know what really grinds my gears about cell phones at concerts?

img_1462.jpg

They fucking replaced lighters. Fuck that shit.

I can't even find an image of lighters at a concert anymore without them probably being mostly cell phones.

She's only looking at the damned phone for like 15 seconds at most, and that was pretty inflated because this is a commercial and they have to highlight the phone functioning. Why is this a bad thing? Even if this was a hypothetical real world situation she missed 15 goddamned seconds of one song. Woopdeedoo

I'm pretty sure that has actually happened before. Or, it was at least attempted.

Probably posted on NeoGAF, too.

i empathise with the OP and all his cantakerous sisyphean struggles. if i'm at a show i give a fuck about, i probably won't even look at my watch.

immersion is from a bygone age now that everyone is in the business of building a brand.

Here's the deal. When you get older you will stop judging your life based on what other people post on social media, and you will stop thinking that people are posting things just to make you judge your life.

young people these days. This thread exemplifies everything wrong with this generation .
Spoken as a crusty-ass old man.

From what I gather it's less about the actual act itself and more about the social media implications. That is, putting the emphasis on posting things just to make your friends jealous when the importance should like more in purely enjoying the show and, in general, enjoying the moment that you're in regardless of what you're doing and not always comparing your situation to others'.

No, but if you're on instagram just to bitch about people posting concert pictures, you would be.

Also, to the op, I can snap a picture, reframe it, and post it on social media in less than 30 seconds. In fact, the girl in the video did just that and was enjoying the band by the end of the commercial, so its a pretty baffling ad to base a rant on.

This

So, this young woman goes to a concert, and during what I imagine is this band's most popular song, she takes a picture, and spends like half the song trying to get the most impressive shot so she can make herself look cool.

You must have really missed the point pretty badly if that's what you took away from it. It's actually showing the opposite.

Because of the "camera phone" she had, all she had to do was take 2 seconds to line up 1 shot that turned out really good. With typical "camera phones" you have to do what you said; spend half the song lining up and taking shots until you get a halfway decent one. Regardless of whether it's "right" or "wrong" that people take time to do that stuff at concerts, the reality of the matter is that it happens, and it happens on a pretty large scale.

With a "jokia lunia" as you called it, your typical person doing that at a concert spends less time taking their pictures, and more time enjoying the concert.

Sounds like you should be on the side of liking the phone, not being against it, with the way you're reacting to how people act and all.

Seriously though. All teenagers are idiots. All of them, throughout all of history. Social media or not.

I know this because I am one.

I was hanging around with a close friend at our university Christmas ball in our final year, and she spent the WHOLE night going around having her photo taken standing next to people. Not talking to anyone or dancing or going to check out the band. Oh no. Just gathering Facebook material.

In the end I got pissed off and left her to it. We haven't spoken since. Looking at her Facebook page, she hasn't changed at all. Such a dull person.

So yes, I see where the OP is coming from.

Eh, I don't care about the act of taking the picture. People are misunderstanding. It's the motive. I feel like every person in this commercial who has a phone is distressed. Some more apparent than others. The friends are obviously made less happy by checking their phones, but you have to look at what the blonde girl is doing. She keeps resizing, zooming, adjusting...despite smiling, I feel that her concern over getting the most impressive shot possible and posting it online ASAP instead of enjoying the show displays how worried she is about her image on social-media. I don't think that's something indicative of happiness.

That's what I have noticed. The attitude of "this generation sucks, the world is screwed" seems really teenager/college to me. As I get older(40+) I realized things are actually pretty great in the world.

Perhaps that will change as I get even older(65+)

Agree with the OP. Every show I go to I'm blinded by camera phone flashes or people texting and looking at their screens rather than actually watching the show and enjoying the moment. It's highly annoying when half the crowd is more concerned about sharing a dark blurry pic on FB than actually enjoying the show with their own eyes. The last concert I went to some girl behind smacked me in the back of the head with her phone trying to take a picture.

This is a very bizarre thing to be bent so out of shape over. Let other people do what they want. Quit freaking out so much when people do shit you don't like.

My only problems towards the majority of this generation is that they don't keep eye contact and keep their faces glued to the phone when trying to talk to them. It's incredibly fucking rude and i don't tolerate it but that isn't to say people from my generation don't do the exact same thing because they do. And it's why i don't lump 1 generation into a problem that expands all ages.

You wanna tweet beep bop gram your duckface? That's fine, no problem. But when someone engages you in a conversation, put your phone down and look them in the eyes. Is that too much to ask?

This rarely happens in real life. Like ever.

What sort of people do you talk to?

I feel like the OP would hate me, as I perfectly fit what he's ranting about.

I'm 16, bought and am loving my 1020, use it all the time to take pictures, and share those pictures on social networking sites.

Guess I better feel ashamed about myself :(

The next step after yelling at the clouds is turning it around and making it a pasttime.

I like to hang out in the park and laugh at the tech zombies. It's especially fun to laugh at the "cool" kids who work so hard at looking, acting, and sounding cool. It really is hilarious. It's important to make sure you laugh loud enough to make sure they realize that you're laughing at them.

If you see a group of old guys laughing in public, it's because the clowns are funny.

I think you are reading too much into a commercial. It is an ads, it sole purpose is to show off the phone and it's capability, and in this case the Nokia Lumia 1020 camera phone. I also find it somewhat baffling for you to post their You Tube ads and then refuse to put the name of the phone because you don't want them to get credit.

just for clarification:

1982-2001: generally accepted years of birth for Millennial Generation

generations do not last 10 years

Ah, yes.. I was forced to sit through that commercial not long ago. I yelled at the tv "BU.. BUT YOU'RE MISSING THE FRICKIN CONCERT!! STOOOOOP!".

I edit my photos and/or videos after the show.

They fucking replaced lighters. Fuck that shit.

I can't even find an image of lighters at a concert anymore without them probably being mostly cell phones.

who even has a lighter anymore? people are trying to quit smoking, that shit isn't good for you.

Looks like Legends of Summer at the Rose Bowl lol

And yeah, I am pretty happy that lighters are on the decline.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, OP, apart from the "this generation" part, since it's not just Gen Y. Real life has become so meta because of social media. Honestly, I'm becoming less enamored with the internet in general *he says as he posts on NeoGAF*, and I used to love the internet. It used to be an escape from all the bullshit of real life, but now it's more bullshit than real life is. GAF included.

I find it far easier to communicate with family, out of town family/friends etc. in 1 place than have to play phone tag or use outdated e-mail.

Have you tried having a conversation in e-mail form? It's easier to just chat inside FB. But again, to each to own.

That's true. And I don't think facebook is all bad, it's been used before for organizing protests and stuff which has potential.

But it really wasn't for me. Glad it's gone (although my information and pictures are still on their servers)

So what your saying is that this generation is concerned with the opinions of others and how they feel valid if their peers think the better of them just like every single generation before and after us with the exception that we just use technology more?

Gotcha.
