This phone commercial exemplifies everything wrong with this generation

As a person with a brand new badass smart phone... this type of behavior still disgusts me.

Make no mistake, I totally understand why these phones are so addictive now, I fucking GET IT. Still, like all things, no one should be a slave to their entertainment.

If you're at a good concert watch the god damn concert. Enjoy the moment. Fuck your facebook/twitter friends. ENJOY THE MOMENT FOR YOURSELF

Who are you to tell people how they should enjoy their lives? If tweeting pics to their friends and family is their way of finding joy then more power to them.

People born after 1980.

Whew, I made the cut. To be fair though for us it was "them and their rap music" for the generation before it was 'them and their rock music.", ect..

I agree with your overarching point though the facebook generation is terrible and I hate them as much as people hated my rap music. It's our rite of passage to hate newer generations than ours.

Wow at the whiners in this thread. I go to shows and festivals all the time. Off the top of my head I must've went to at least 20 concerts this year and people using their cell phones is just a sign of the times. Before cell phones it was compact digital cameras. People like to take photos and share their experience. I do it as well. There's nothing wrong with that. There's a difference between someone taking a video of the entire show and someone taking photos or a Vine video. Threads like this always amuse me because it shows how grumpy and aged some Gaffers are, which is funny, because I'm 31 and none of this shit affects me or gets me riled up.

One thing I will complain about though is when you go to a fucking show, don't go into the crowd near the front and stand completely still. Some of us want to dance or get into the show and it sucks when someone is right next to you and gets pissed because you're pushing into them or want to dance. Also, dudes with girlfriends who get pissed and put their arms around their girls and get bitchy when people are pushing or dancing really close. If you're so concerned about your girlfriend, take her to the damn balcony.

Facebook is great.

It's all about how you use it.

I never look at the wall. Half the people I've blocked. I use it for the groups feature and messaging. Nothing else and I'm happy.

Mmhmmm. I agree with you completely. I have zero problems with taking a quick snap at a concert. Your still enjoying the show and it's just a quick thing to do. If that is honestly a problem with some then I dont know what to tell you.

They can do what they want, sure. But I have a difficult time believing they're enjoying their lives with a phone in their face every second of their lives walking around like zombies trying desperately to be popular on facebook and twitter.

What's the difference between that and people trying hard to be internet cool on message boards? I have a difficult time believing these types of individuals are truly enjoying their lives.

But hey, if they are, more power to them as you said.

I've taken small disposable film cameras to concerts back in the day. It's not like this is anything new and I don't understand why everyone has to enjoy a concert the same way.

This is hilarious and so true. It's the 'show off' generation. Where people are only worth what others think of them.

So many people go everywhere and take pics of themselves and them caption it like 'Canucks playoff games, no big deal!' 'at the Jay Z/Timberlake concert' etc.

Share everything from what you're feeling, what food you ate as if to try and get some validation I guess. Taking pictures is not bad. It's good to take a picture and preserve your memories.

I'm not seeing what's so hard to understand there. They arent enjoying their life because they are checking facebook? Who are you to judge them?

Yup, I dont even go to many shows but when I did I sure as hell took pics with my phone and a few short vids. Hell when I went to Lolla with Kitchenmotors for the first time I took pics and vids but i suppose I'm a bad person for wanting to share my first concert experince with my friends. lol

I don't understand when people get so upset, to the point of disgust, that other people are enjoying themselves and want to share the moment. People are social, the rise of technology that fits into our pockets gives people a means to be more connected. Why get so up in arms because people are enjoying themselves and want to show others?

Way to generalize everyone who uses a phone and Facebook/Twitter. If anything, I'd rather deal with someone who had their face in their phone more often than not than someone like you who likes to bitch and complain about the way other people go about ways of communicating.

You know why, Del. Nothing better to do than perch and try to slay those that are more social than they are... except their technique is dated and aged, like Lady Gaga's career.

Let me guess your one of those people that light up a joint and stink up the area cause eyou want to enjoy the moment man....

Seriously. Such a mess. Oh and getting on people for using Twitter? I use Twitter and Facebook to promote my books. I take pics of things and post them as they inspired me in my writing. So to hell with deleting the media that helps promote myself and get out to more people.

.

The existence of the technology may have created a feedback loop that resulted in things spiralling but it wouldn't have started if there wasn't a need there in the first place...

Why are you on a message board when you watch basketball? Or even right now? Log off, turn your devices off and ENJOY THE MOMENT FOR YOURSELF.

Your disgust at what people choose to do on their own phones or how to enjoy them says more about you then it does about them. This is that "I HATE PEOPLE WHO DON'T DANCE AT CONCERTS >:(" topic all over again, wrapped in a "this generation/kids today suck" layer.

Well, I don't hate people who don't dance at concerts... but I get annoyed when those people are near or at the front of the crowd with people that WANT to dance. You can't escape getting pushed a little or rubbed against when this happens, especially at a packed show. If that isn't an issue, fine, but more often than not people get bitchy or give you mean looks. Then it becomes an issue and you should really move further back or to the balcony.

Who am I to judge? I'm someone who doesn't have their face buried in their phone every minute of every day and doesn't have to worry about running into pools of water because I'm not paying attention to what's going on around me. I'm someone who isn't a slave to their electronics. That's who I am to judge.

If your way of "communicating" is having your face buried in your phone when people are trying to talk to you, or having your phone on during movies (this shit in particular is so god damn shameful), or trying desperately to look cool on facebook and twitter, then what you perceive as "communicating" is garbage.

Oh, and I much rather deal with someone who I can actually talk face to face to like a human being more often than not then someone like you who bitches about people like me who find it disheartening that so many peoples lives revolve around their god damn pocket phones.

Why are you on a message board when you watch basketball? Or even right now? Log off, turn your devices off and ENJOY THE MOMENT FOR YOURSELF.
I'm at home relaxing on my day off after a 52 hour work week... I'm not at a movie theater, or at a concert, or playing pick-up ball with my friends. I'm in my bed kicking back on a lazy Sunday. The only electronic I have on is my computer.

My smart phone is right next to me too. In sleep mode with a fully charged battery. Feels good. :)

Louis da god

I'm not talking about right now, but since I know you are part of a social network that posts comments on every single play while watching a basketball game, I find it amusing that you can't understand why people might find enjoyment with sharing other activities. Many people on GAF post play-by-play commentaries of TV shows, too.

So your going to judge everyone that uses facebook or Twitter because of that video? You feel like that's enough for you to judge a large portion of people? That says a lot about you.

Who said anything about having your phone on during a movie? That's rude. This is about a social event where people want to share it with others through the means of taking photos or a video.

And what is this about trying to desperately look cool on Facebook or Twitter? I weed my friends down to people I only talk to... you know, COMMUNICATE, and most of the time people enjoy when I post photos of my shows. I love it when I see my other friends at shows or events, it's a nice way to see what they're up to.

This is the commercial for the Jokia Lunia something or other (not giving them more publicity than I have to). It's a camera phone with a zoom.

So, this young woman goes to a concert, and during what I imagine is this band's most popular song, she takes a picture, and spends like half the song trying to get the most impressive shot so she can make herself look cool.

Watch the reactions "SO JEALOUS" "Front Row?!" She's lying! She's more concerned with making herself look better than actually watching the damn band. She doesn't even like this fucking band, I bet. She's not there for the band.

That's facebook for ya. Once you are out of college, you should delete that shit. It starts making you feel bad. See all her friends in the commercial? They all feel WORSE because of social media. They are jealous, and probably have lower self-esteem because of what their friend posted. And, they are all doing fun shit like bowling, dating, and shopping, and they stop what they're doing to look at their phones with MISERABLE EXPRESSIONS. My God, man, why? Why would you do this to yourself? As advertising's objective is to make the product or service the link between who someone is and who they would ideally like to be, we are supposed to want to be the person who makes all their friends feel bad with fraudulent superiority facilitated by illusions, I guess.

These are weird times we live in.

haha this is honestly the exact same thing i thought when I saw this commercial.

I was at a my bloody valentine concert a couple days ago and some asshole had to hold up his phone to film full videos of every song.

But this isn't what is being brought up. A guy who films the entire concert is an asshole, no two ways about it. Someone who is taking a photo or a quick video to share with friends via social media is not.

I had this same problem.

I spent a fuckton of money to take my girlfriend to Disney and instead of actually enjoying herself she tried to film a bunch of rides and post the videos to instagram. Then she'd spend all day checking how many likes the videos had. So many of our ride pictures, she had her phone in her face.

Really pissed me off.

the whole reason you are sharing it on social media is to brag about some cool thing you are doing to make other people jealous and that was basically the premise of the commercial.

You know what really grinds my gears about cell phones at concert

They fucking replaced lighters. Fuck that shit.

I can't even find an image of lighters at a concert anymore without them probably being mostly cell phones.

You do realise that the reason people don't use lighters is because fewer people smoke?
Why else would you carry one?

Dude who cares? So she took her eyes off the band for a second. How dare she! You don't need to see the band in order to enjoy the music.

There's nothing wrong with doing this in real life - it's a quick snap. Won't take more than a few seconds of your life. Most shots will be blurry and ugly, but sometimes you catch a nice moment when the lightshow goes off. Most people would post it later once they get home. Probably share it with the performer's page, or the event page on whatever social networking site they hosted it at. I think a lot of the smaller bands would appreciate that too.

But it's a horrible, horrible commercial. There's something about the way the whole thing is put together that feels off to me, at least. I can take a guess that it's because that's there's an emphasis on some complete nobody or the phone when the traditional narrative says it should be about the concert or the band.

Yes commercials are completely manufactured experiences, I get it. But most commercials try to hide it. Comedy/absurdity, cartoons, landscape shots (think commercials) are some examples. But this one - it's a completely manufactured experience that they don't even try to hide. It feels fake because there's no emphasis on the crowd energy, the band is playing a studio version of the song instead of something resembling a live performance, and even the hand waving at the end is obviously choreographed... and even looks annoying. The picture she snapped is completely clear and hi def so it feels off. that's me at least.

I think all those feelings about the experience feeling wrong are then focused onto the girl and what's she's doing, and that's why some of us feel that it's a bad sign of the times. If you see people holding up their phones in a concert, it's kind of cool. Doesn't get in the way at all.

But make it a personal experience here in the commercial and it's haters all around.

If we were just shown the phone like the iphone commercials I think there would be less hate. But nope they have to throw in a fake concert. That's my take on it at least

Like I said earlier. When I went to Lolla for the first time I posted pics and vids from it to share my first experince. Are you saying I was bragging about being there by doing it?

The only time recently I went on Facebook to brag was when I went to see Baths/Will Wiesenfeld and got to meet him. A talented musician who is a gaming nerd and gay? I'm in LOVE.

amazing projecting

Carlos, when we go see Nine Inch Nails again at the end of next month let's share photos/videos on Facebook to make everyone jelly and brag about the most amazing concert experience you could ever have, k?

And I know when you posted photos of that Ellie Goulding DJ set, it sure as hell wasn't bragging.
