Reggie Fils-Aime on Xbox One/PS4 lineups: "Meh"

Maybe, maybe not. I wouldn't have, if I was in his place.

I'm guessing you made your switch before Mario Galaxy, NSMB Wii, and Donkey Kong Country Returns came out? Because to a lot of people who are into those genres, they are as good as it gets...

With any luck, yeah.
No. We had a Wii by 2008 but my brother sold it 6 months later after the novelty wore off. Honestly those games just don't appeal to me. To name a few, Things like GTA, GOW, Journey and newer ips just interested me more and still do.

He's not wrong about those line ups. And I'll take Nintendo's first party efforts over anyone else's, but the there's going to be a bunch of great games coming later (Guilty Gear, Mirror's Edge 2, ect...) that probably won't end up on Nintendo platforms.

I don't mean Reggie himself, if that's what you mean? I mean Nintendo as a whole. I too would like to see them evolve, maybe it is NTDOY Japan holding them back. The biggest problem I have with Nintendo is that they were around much longer than Sony or Microsoft, and yet they seem to target (almost-exclusively) younger demographics. That's great for getting young people into gaming, but damn does it hurt to be an older gamer who grew up while Nintendo didn't. Their games are still fun, I guess, but...it's just not the same.

Most of us who bitch about Nintendo grew up with them. I would not have any animosity towards them if I did not give a shit. My idea of Nintendo is something great.

Sorry this PES not directly answer your post. I agree with you though, well maybe only 90% of the time.

Who is this guy and why should I care about what he has to say?

Does anyone even like Nintendo on GAF anymore? I mean, I see the value, and I'm more excited about the Wii U lineup than any other system right now including the 3DS. Nothing else grabs me. Has it been lackluster until last month? Yes. But I feel like anyone with a brain can look at the lineup and say "yeah, the next 5 months look fantastic", but I'm just not seeing it. Is there something wrong with me?

No. Tastes change, it's just how it goes.

I don't really care about Nintendo's offerings either. My 3DS is a glorified Atlus machine.

I don't know, it could have potentially come in the future, but the point is neither Sony or Microsoft felt they needed it - Bayonetta didn't exactly set the sales world on fire, which is why a company like Nintendo needed to be there to allow the sequel to be made in the first place.

I don't know why people are complaining about this. The game was never successful enough to receive a true next-gen sequel; the budget would likely not be worth it. Instead, they're trading up amongst the current gen hardware ecosystem that they're familiar with and delivering an amazing Bayo experience that everyone gets to enjoy at some point.

I seriously don't get why people are not simply happy Nintendo picked them up, versus being mad Sony and Microsoft didn't pick it up, or being sad the game doesn't exist anywhere.

I'm not trying to absolve Nintendo from criticism - nobody has complained about their franchise whoring more than me, especially in the face of two platforms investing huge funds into brand new hardcore IPs with massive budgets on top of the classics. Nintendo really needs to be driving the conversation with their own internal studios. X is a good example of what there should be a lot more of from within Nintendo. There simply isn't enough of that yet, and there is simply too much damned Mario and other Nintendo IPs. In my opinion.

I am sorry but those games grew old to me after I sat down, gave the playstation a chance after dismissing it for so long, played games like Driver, Syphon Filter on PS1.

It is sad because I have fond memories of Nintendo as a child, hell I bought a N64 twice and even went with a gamecube the gen after that, but one day Nintendo will fall because Donkey Kong legs fall off, Mario gets too fat to jump any more, and Zelda slips into a time warp even he cannot recognize.

He's right, Nintendo have a much better lineup this year.

I'm struggling to find things on the next gen systems I want to get at launch (and I really want there to be, I need an excuse to say I need one now!), there are no big must haves to me at all while the Wii U has many 'next wave' titles I'm really looking forward too.

Whether or not it will be the case in the coming years I have my doubts, we'll see. There will ALWAYS be the big Nintendo games I want but I'm sure next holiday the other 2 systems will be amping up by then too. Either way Reggie is gonna get the kicks in while he can. :D

I don't know about you guys, but I equate "meh" to "not good, not bad". It sounds more like indifference than anything else and I don't see anything wrong with that. It's not like he called them outright crap. He was asked about how his console would fare directly against the competitors' launches, and he commented on the competitors' launches. Again, I don't attach a major negative connotation to the word he used.

Ignoring Sony and MS exclusive titles. He just insulted all major publishers and indies launching games on these platforms . Bad call imo

The same goes for any other companies on GAF.

You will likely see many different groups jumping on Capcom, Microsoft, Square-Enix, Sony's Vita. Basically, whatever that's on a bad roll at the moment.

Blocking out all of those "other" games because you know your time will be 100% invested in Pokemon X/Y? :P

I'm not really sure how I'm going to actually get enough free time to play these games that are finally coming out after that terrible dry spell of nothingness after the launch. Its a good problem to have though.. finally...

I'm saying I DO see the value in the Wii U lineup. it's the lineup of the other systems that I think is lackluster.

Well he's right for now. I don't think he'll be able to keep saying 'meh' by next year. The problem is that third party companies will make games for the new platforms. Nintendo is pretty much on their own.

I prefer Nintendo's games to anyone else's, but I feel like the sheer quantity of solid titles on 41 will definitely overshadow little old Nintendo. I'd love to be wrong though. In a perfect world, Wonderful 101 would be selling like crazy. Things don't always go the way I'd prefer.

who cares about the comparison between launch titles on the next gen and available titles on wiiu. I buy a console for the future 3-4 years worth of games and not just the right here right now and as it stands ps4/xbone will have 10x the compelling software by the end of 2014.

This guy gets it. You can MAYBE argue that Nintendo's lineup is better this holiday. Third parties don't give a shit about Nintendo, though, so given time (a year or less), the other two will be miles ahead of WiiU.

Don't underestimate Reggie..

this fall/holiday finally has good games for wii u. all the good shit for ps4/x1 is ALSO coming to ps3/360 and even more are still current-gen exclusive. ps4 and x1 are just wastes of money tbh.

That's a company's fault, they fail at life. Nintendo has trouble trying to push forward.

It's been two generations now where i've owned all three consoles ( and dreamcast). I'm just not playing the Nintendo PR game anymore, Reggie's comments are meaningless, Wii U is going to have a barren line-up every year with a handful of quality stuff that will get me to possibly buy next fall, not this fall, and not as my first new system. There is more to buying a system than what it releases in November and December of its launch year, and that doesn't need to be explained to know how full of crap Reggie is, and he's paid to be that way.

People want those experiences on a next-generation platform; not a platform with the same graphical fidelity as what they're already playing right now on their 360 or PS3.

Same reason why all multiplatform games sell like garbage on Wii U. So no, they really don't count the same.

like it or not wiiu is a next gen system. it remains to be seen how much difference something like watch dogs will have between ps3/360/wiiu/ps4/xbone. the most technically superior version will be on pc anyway.

Meh... These aren't even the "next-gen" successors yet. HD aside, all of them could be Wii or 3DS games.

I don't mind the franchise use from Nintendo, never have, but I was hoping for this string of holiday titles to be a little more ... bold? I look at titles like Mario and DK, and I see good, appealing games, just not ones that excite me to bite early or to spend full price. Speaking of which, this trend from Nintendo of asking me to spend a full sixty dollars on games that can't even muster up online functionality despite nearly all of them having multi or other lacking features isn't going to fly with me beyond a few, rare entries.

Holy crap I had no idea, no sarcasm. Monolith Soft is... does this mean X is a first party IP too... whoaaaaaaaaa

Me:

That is so cool. I'm hella excited for X now

Don't feel bad. A lot of people apparently don't know that Nintendo owns Monolith.

Also, hilarious gif
