Puppeteer EU Demo Thread

There are 7 Acts in Puppeteer and each has 3 curtains (stages).
Once you have unlocked each act and curtain you can go back and play them anytime you like.

Infact you will have to replay them to find all the secrets and all the heads.

There are no speed runs (because I am rubbish at them) but just trying to get all the trophies is going to mean a lot of replaying of levels. No... I'm not telling what the trophies are.

I hope you enjoy the game.

Okay, thanks. 21 stages, at first glance, feels like a small amount when comparing it to other platformers, but I know its not always that simple. About how long does each stage take? Or, if they vary a lot, about how long does a full campaign run take?

Th presentation is immaculate but as I feared the EU demo has confirmed that the gamplay just doesn't appeal to me. Pass.
Most people seem to be pleasantly surprised by the gameplay and say it's more Rayman-esque than LBP-like. Can you be more detailed in your thoughts? How the game controls, etc, has been my biggest concern since it looks like LBP, but I'm repeatedly reassured it's not. The key to a fun platformer is a responsive character -- the right mix of traction, air control, momentum, etc. Granted, this game has different demands due to the "point-'n-click" adventure-game element with the flying cat on the right stick. It's probably a bit more "deliberative." Here's hoping whatever it is, it works.

And oh my god Gavin Moore is in this thread. However your game plays, I'm absolutely blown away by the imagination and craftsmanship you have on display. I keep seeing Burton, Gilliam, etc, listed as influences, but I wonder if you also are familiar with the works of Mike Mignola (writer-artist of Hellboy -- his work looks like German Expressionist woodcarvings, and he has a penchant for puppets and heavy shadows, not unlike your game!).

I know you were talking to someone else and I already said my thoughts on the demo earlier in the thread. I just wanted to say I couldn't play LBP, just didn't like it especially the floaty controls, this game isn't like that, I felt they nailed the controls personally.

Man, I can never hear that enough times. I think I'm worrying too much about this game because it just looks SO GOOD that I fear the one unknown variable -- the controls -- will be its downfall. To hear you say you've tried the controls and they're fun is encouraging indeed.

I'm totally ready to be a crusader for this game -- just looking at it and listening to it makes me feel like a kid again, in a way few games do. I just hope they didn't forget the heart and soul of a game -- its gameplay.

Don't care for the scissors gameplay. Just doesn't feel all that fun to use. The mini boss fight at the end just highlighted how janky it is to use when you have to guide it. The controls are better than LBP but they're not clicking with me, game just feels too slow.

Hmm, I think I heard the scissors cut faster the more rapidly you tap the cut button.

Why don't you play the demo? The controls are nothing like LBP, they feel just like you'd expect them to.

I was smiling from ear to ear during the demo. Good grief, just so adorable. Every object is imbued with a sort of unnatural life and vibrancy, makes it hard not to enjoy yourself.

How would you describe the controls, physics, responsiveness, weight, etc?

The demo for this game has stuck with me quite weirdly, like I want to play the game now!

It pretty much is day 1 for me.
Any good retail deals for the game in the UK? I think the PSN store may just be my best bet.

I made you a friggin EU account you pansy. Go play that demo.
Ha! Much appreciated! Seriously. :) But maybe you should PM this to me instead of making it public, lol.

Assuming someone else doesn't use my account, I shall download the demo and report back here later with my impressions.

Here's hoping I'll be so enthused I march straight to Gamestop tomorrow to preorder for the Patrick Doyle OST!

Well if anyone is heinous enough to do that I'll make you another and anyone else who can't be bothered to waste 1 minute.
So snarky, but so helpful! :O

NAPALM FRAAAAAAAAANK!

Will try tonight (provided I can clean out enough fridge space) and report back, giving you credit. :)

Not that my opinion's worth more than anyone else, but I've been most vocal about this, lol.

If you preorder the game, you'll get a code for the digital soundtrack. You can download it on your PS3 and then transfer it to your computer on a USB stick or SD card. If it's like TLOU, they should be mp3s. :)

And yep, the OST is by THE Patrick Doyle. Hell, I think I'll get it for the Moon Bear King theme alone. It's the song I've heard the most and I -love- it.

I even put the damn demo to your download list.

Damn, that was nice of you.

Where are your impressions dude? Now I'm curious lol.

Game became more interesting to me once I got
the scissors
...but I have some gripes with the controls:
First off I prefer using the D-Pad for 2D games, but the option to switch in this game doesn't sit well with me:
First off i've gotten used to from various TPS games to use the D-Pad to switch my weapons or abilities, having this option on the Left stick is just...jarring.
I would prefer if the ability and switch Heads commands were mapped to different buttons if I switch to D-Pad control, but hopefully this thing can be considered for a future patch.

Anyways, pre-order off EU PSN, since its download completed, and is only 5.5-ish GB.
When the game is available in 2 weeks, do I download an unlock code?

Yap, so i played this demo few days ago and it definately feels great on the controll front, i say this because i know a lot of people are quick to compare it to LBP due to its pupet stage type look, except though it doesnt completely look like LBP at all, its got its own visual charm thats aching more towards real Puppet shows (changing backgrounds, curtain closses, crowd gestures etc).

The gameplay also plays great, the character feels like he has weight to him and the jumping is very responsive, unlike in LBP where the characters feel floaty, in this game, there is a sense of threat from the platforming and it feels fast as well. I also have to mention the Scissors mechanic, despite not using it for long, i can see how it would add more to the platforming due to its pace.

I do plan to get this game for my GF younger sister as she likes these type of games and i would get another me myself as well, highly recommend it.

**waits patiently for Neiteio’s impressions**
I appreciate your interest. :) I have the demo downloaded -- took around nine hours overnight! -- but I haven't installed it yet. That's the easy part. I plan to play it later and really put the platforming through its paces. I know the level is simple and I won't to get the fullest sense of the game's "flow," but I can at least try bolting left and right, jumping here and there, really testing the fluidity, the responsiveness.

I plan to make a thread focused purely on the platforming of Puppeteer, which will focus everyone's conversation specifically on this point. I hope to do this late tonight (Eastern time).

I played through the demo with my 3 year old son yesterday...he was fascinated, as was I. Proper platforming jumping physics are such a nice change after playing LBP and LBP2. Amazing visuals, hilarious commentary (which I had to replay again to ensure I caught everything) and real sense of self. Puppeteer knows what it is and embraces it fully. This went from a "maybe" to "absolutely day one" in my books. I hope it doesn't get lost in the shuffle this year.

this is the only PS3 game I think should have been moved to PS4, I fear it will lost in this falls avalanche and really deserves to succeed. I hope it makes it. I'll buy it off general principle

Unfortunately i am afraid it is, there has been little marketing for it and not untill i heard an impression from IGN Collin Moriarity, i never knew the game existed. Then there is also the fact that its trapped in between Splinter Cell Blacklist and GTAV.

For some reason, i feel that this game should have been a launch Tittle for the PS4 just like Knack is, but whatever right

My point exactly, it looks so much more appealing than Knack in my opinion and plays great too, i was pleasantly suprised by how fun it played

Demo is very solid, but I think its not as good as Rayman Legends.

The EU demo is meatier than the Japanese demo and they didn't lie when they said there were more mechanics in the game. Its really good and fun.

If I had to complain, its that the helper dude under the R stick sort of annoys me. You can compare this to the cursor in Dragon's Crown, as if the game was initially meant for touchscreen.

I pray that for the sake of Sony Japan, they make a Vita version, this game screams Vita

I think ti's more of a question of whether or not the Vita could even run it. They'll probably have to scale it down a decent amount. Specifically the lighting since they went crazy in that area.

It really pains me to think that this might bomb at retail.
We shouldn't jump to conclusions when the charts roll in though, hopefully it will do well on PSN.

wow this thread was the reason I gave the demo a try and I was mesmerized by it. It might've helped that I played in 3d but wow, the atmosphere of the game was amazing. I wasnt the least bit interested in the game but now I want to play it.

How long is the final game? And why does it retail for only 40€? Hopefully it's not because it is short?

Happy to do my civic duty and bring awareness to a game more people really should be paying attention to.

I think Gavin went on record saying the game is a good 10 or 12+ hours long. It's a budget release because... who knows? It seems to be becoming a trend, with certain platforming games having their price reduced because of the genre. Sly 4, Rayman Legends, Tearaway.

“It’s a huge game,” Moore proclaimed, “it’s over twelve hours long, and the premise of the game is that it changes every five to ten minutes. So the sets will change on you, it’s all set in a magical theatre so instead of moving through the world you will move through the sets and the sets will revolve, and suddenly you’ll be climbing a tower, and next you’ll be under the sea, and next you’ll be in space, and you don’t know where you’re going to be and you never know what you’re going to see.”

Puppeteer features an enormous amount of variety and Moore himself claims that you’ll never see the same thing twice – once you’ve run past an object or defeated an enemy, the next area of the game will be completely different. This variety extends to the music, too, with 70 different compositions created for Puppeteer.

Hehe I appreciate your effort, Sony did a poor job marketing this game, I mean even the name Puppeteer is incredibly uninspired.

10-12hours sounds ideal, I guess I'll pick it up then. I can't remember the last time I played a big budget 2D plattformer. Puppeteer therefore felt like I was transported back in time to my early days as a gamer. :) I had almost forgetten what it feels like to play a game that's just fun and isnt solely focused on keeping your adrenaline and dopamine levels up. What a surprise.

edit:

perfect, thanks!
