MS buys the Xbone.com domain name

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/09/12/microsoft-has-bought-xbonecom

Fusible reports that Microsoft has bought Xbone.com, after Major Nelson called the console's mostly-affectionate nickname "disrespectful".

A WHOIS search reveals that the domain is owned by Microsoft. Currently nothing is hosted there - it redirects to a Bing search for 'Xbone' - but presumably Microsoft has bought it to prevent anybody else from using it.

On NeoGAF earlier this week, Major Nelson called the Xbone moniker disrespectful. "I don't like it...it disrespects the teams that have put in thousands of hours (already) into the development of the product. Sure, it's cheeky but I don't care for it myself," he wrote.

Time will tell if the Xbone nickname endures for as long as CODBLOPS. Xbox One launches on November 22nd.

can we now say it's officially the nickname? TAKE THAT, Major.

It's officially official now.

Obligatory:

(I don't think its disrespectful either)

Smart move, you don't want people to make fun of your billion dollar project with a cheeky website domain name.

He called it disrespectful? That's kinda...insane. He truly behaves like a major. Tbh, he's probably the worst PR-guy in the business now, not a bit of sovereignty.

Nah shitting on your consumers, lying, trying to take away our selling rights, shoving Kinect down our throats, money hatting exclusives, forcing online DRM and not giving value to your non-US Gold subscribers is disrespectful.

The Xbone name is here to stay Larry.

That quote kinda pissed me off too. Didn't the name spring up because everyone felt "boned" by MS trying to introduce all their DRM shit? WE were the ones being disrespected imo

I'm not typing or calling it the Xbox one, the same way I wouldn't for PlayStation 4. I'm also not calling it one. That is a moronic name.

Xbone is quick and it works. Fuck it if they don't like it. They should have anticipated this.

I'm all for shitting on MS these days, but I don't particularly like Xbone. As a shorthand, it only works in one language (English) and as an insult, it seems petty and classless. Like M$.

XB1 works fine.

Probably just the default for an empty MS-owned domain, but it amuses me that it redirects for a search for 'Xbone', and not 'Xbox One'.

Every dutch person I know with an interest in the Xbox One calls it 'Xbone', or even 'The Bone'. It just rolls off the tongue.

Too bad, deal with it.

It's disrespectful you say? Boo f'n hoo.

XBONE XBONE XBONE XBONE XBONE

You've got some nerve saying that something coming from gamers is disrespectful to the people who worked on the XBone when your initial policies were tremendously disrespectful to gamers along with your attitude when you were called out on said policies.

"Don't have a reliable ISP? We have a great console for you and it's called the Xbox 360."

I mean really.

If anything, XBO sounds stupid - Xbone, on the other hand, is handy and rolls off the tongue quickly.

And now "Xbone" even is the official nickname of the console!

X1 or XBO isn't more difficult than saying "PS3" or "PS4". And to my knowledge, that worked out pretty fine.

Heck, even the "Xbox 360" is stupid. There's never been consensus about whether it's "X360" or "XB360" or just "360".

Xbone is a good joke, though. Nothing more, nothing less.

Astonished Xbone.com domain still existed. Or does the article say the WHOIS search is from much earlier in the year?
